Zoi finished placing the plates around somewhat haphazardly and clipped a couple of the flowers and leafy stems from a bush beside the hut to place around them. No one would say it was symmetrical, but the effect was rather pretty and she sat herself down as Dira reappeared. “You know, I had a date once try cinnamon on steak. Just plain ground cinnamon. It was awful and I do not recommend it. Totally ruined dinner and the poor man just could not recover from the embarrassment he felt. Sad that he felt it needed to end the date. I wish he could have recovered. Flexibility of mind is important.”

“Awww,” Dira said with a laugh. “But those small things tell you everything you need to know, right? We don’t always know it at the time, but most people who us who they truly are right from the beginning. You just have to get through the noise to see what those truths are,” she said as she grabbed a dish and put a couple items on her own before passing it to Zoi.

She took the plate and began placing items on her own. Then she placed it on the table before them and picked a second dish, placing items from it onto her plate and then passing it to Dira.

“You for example, my dear, are judicious in your attention. You don’t waste it carelessly, whether it’s on the job or in a more personal interaction. And that means that the attention youdo give someone is honest and true,” Dira said, pouring them both a glass of the hibiscus drink.

“Some people might think I am too guarded with my attention. One of the previous Chiefs of Psychology here thought so and maybe he was more than a little right. I haven’t tried to make friends in so long that I think I have forgotten how to use the practice of it. I have lived in a state of flux for so long that I am just used to being alone even on a ship full of perfectly nice people. Couple that with my easy annoyance at stupidity and I find I have not been very good at being around people unless I am in the role of being a professional.”

Dira nodded as she grabbed a couple more items for her plate. “It’s like any sort of physical training. Muscles you haven’t used in awhile need flexing a bit and it’s better to warm them up a little.” She gazed at Zoi deeply for a moment. “Just be gentle with yourself and remember that you might not get it right for a little while but soon enough it will be second-nature to you. And I highly recommend spending a fair bit of time with me. I’m very good at the social thing,” she said with a wink.

Zoi laughed. “Does it really count as being social if we are in your bedroom all the time?” It was clear her question was a jest and she leaned forward. “I don’t mind taking recommendations like that to heart.”

Dira gave a throaty chuckle in reply. “Everything in moderation, my dear.”

Zoi’s hand slid along the space between them so that she could entwine her fingers with this enchanting woman. When she had finally left her mother with the thought of living her life for herself now, she could not have guessed she would find a relationship like this. Even at its beginnings, this relationship was stable and fun, light at times and deep at others. There were surprises and steady moments too. Her heart swelled as she looked at this woman before her.

Squeezing Zoi’s hand gently, the telepath gazed deeply into Zoi’s eyes. For a brief moment she felt lost in them. “And to think we could have just had a normal meet and greet meeting in an office somewhere. I think if we had things might have gone differently. I’m so glad they didn’t!” she said before lifting their entwined hands and kissing the back of Zoi’s hand.

Releasing her hand , Dira started to test out their eclectic food choices.

She laughed softly and nodded. Had they met in the usual manner, would they have explored the chemistry between them? Clinical settings didn’t lead easily to flow and conversation. In one fell swoop, they had broken the ice and started the process of getting to know one another. It had been a fairly intimate setting. Good food, good lighting, mood music and a relaxed atmosphere could break down walls normally in place to keep professionalism in its place. Still, as she looked at the woman before her, Zoi had to shake her head. “No.” She said with a grin. “I think it would have taken us longer, but we would have gotten to this place eventually. There is a chemistry that we can’t deny and I certainly don’t want to.”
