“Ah, good thinking,” Brad said. “I didn’t know that, but then, I’ve spent most of my time on the ship so far either in my office or in my quarters. This is my first time really getting out and exploring.”

“You really should get out more Dr Walker. Are you still digging out from under the paper work from transferring ships?” Alexis remembered on the star base Walker had put her in charge of everything concerning the crew and medical day-to-day while he handled all the myriad responsibilities and headaches of transferring ships. The irony of her telling Walker to get out more, was not lost on her, but Alexis thrived on the work. She did it because it was fun not because she was a work-a-holic, it also quieted all those myriad thoughts and tangents that never stopped.

“No, all the transfer work is done, now it’s just all the admin work that’s attached to having a crew ten times the size of the old ship,” Brad said. “Plus, we’ve got a few med students on board, so there’s some supervisory work attached to that as well.”

Frigga wanted to move and so she made her way around, turning Alexis in circles and then nudging her behind the knees to get her moving. Alexis shook her head looking down at the dog. Alexis turned in the direction he was going and began to walk. “She’d probably like the arboretum if you’d like to join us.”

Bonner

“Sure,” Brad said. “A nature walk sounds like a good way to pass the time, get some fresh air.”

From the other end of the corridor, a door slid aside to reveal Lieutenant Kyle Anders. Patrol had been rather quiet that afternoon, so the young Yorkshireman was eager for the company. At the sight of Frigga, Kyle grinned and jogged up to give her some affection, when he also noticed Bonner and Walker, he gave a friendly nod, “Lieutenant, Commander, lovely afternoon isn’t it?”

-Lieutenant Kyle Anders: Security Officer-

“Certainly seems that way, Lieutenant,” Brad replied, bemused by the interaction between security officer and dog. “We’re heading to the arboretum, if you care to join us?”

Frigga stopped and stood at happy doggy attention, tail wagging, tongue lolling and then gave Anders just as much affection as he was giving her. She hopped on her front feet. After several happy minutes of being the center of attention, Frigga looked from Alexis to Anders to Walker and back. Were they going or standing. Because she’d rather be going somewhere, running and chasing and playing.

Kyle arched an eyebrow, “Thinking about it, the arboretum is an area of the ship I haven’t really had chance to look at yet,” then, looking at Frigga, he added, “Want to come with us lass?” He scrunched the puppy’s ears.

Frigga snorted and ran toward the turbolift and looked back as if asking what they were waiting for. Then she ran back nosing and tugging on Alexis’ hand. “Yeah yeah we’re coming.” The pup pranced circles around them for a moment before running ahead to the lift again and waiting. Reaching the lift Alexis hit the call button and then “Deck 9” once everyone was on the lift.

Bonner and Frigga

“I must admit,” Kyle said as he entered the lift, “I’ve been rather curious for a while about the purpose of an arboretum is when aboard a medical ship, I understand for the purposes of herbal remedy creation, but all that space on Deck 9 for that?” Kyle chastisted himself, he didn’t mean to sound rude but had the feeling that the officers around him would view this as a stupid question.

-Lieutenant Kyle Anders: Security Officer-

“Oh, there’s plenty of reasons beyond that,” Brad said. “It’s a well-documented fact that regular exposure to plants has a therapeutic effect, beyond just eating them or transforming them into medicine. Plus, the psychological benefits of having a space you can go to that lets you take your mind off the fact that you’re trapped in a pressurized metal tube hurtling through the void at speeds that boggle the parts of the mind that can barely comprehend using sticks as crude tools.”

“Humanoids were never meant to live in space,” Alexis added to Walker’s explanation. “Our bodies need natural air and sunlight. We recycle the air on the ship but it lacks the small minute things in the air that allow our bodies to adapt and improve. We can take in vitamin D through our foods but our bodies were designed to absorb it through sunlight. So the natural UV lights in the arboretum provide some of that, and the plants provide us with real naturally occurring air which keeps our lungs healthy and working optimally, the way nature designed.”

Bonner, AMO

Kyle nodded thoughtfully, “Well, I’m no green fingered gardener, but I’d be happy to help if I can?”
