Kyle arched an eyebrow, “Thinking about it, the arboretum is an area of the ship I haven’t really had chance to look at yet,” then, looking at Frigga, he added, “Want to come with us lass?” He scrunched the puppy’s ears.

-Lieutenant Kyle Anders: Security Officer-

Frigga snorted and ran toward the turbolift and looked back as if asking what they were waiting for. Then she ran back nosing and tugging on Alexis’ hand. “Yeah yeah we’re coming.” The pup pranced circles around them for a moment before running ahead to the lift again and waiting. Reaching the lift Alexis hit the call button and then “Deck 9” once everyone was on the lift.

“I must admit,” Kyle said as he entered the lift, “I’ve been rather curious for a while about the purpose of an arboretum is when aboard a medical ship, I understand for the purposes of herbal remedy creation, but all that space on Deck 9 for that?” Kyle chastisted himself, he didn’t mean to sound rude but had the feeling that the officers around him would view this as a stupid question.

-Lieutenant Kyle Anders: Security Officer-

“Oh, there’s plenty of reasons beyond that,” Brad said. “It’s a well-documented fact that regular exposure to plants has a therapeutic effect, beyond just eating them or transforming them into medicine. Plus, the psychological benefits of having a space you can go to that lets you take your mind off the fact that you’re trapped in a pressurized metal tube hurtling through the void at speeds that boggle the parts of the mind that can barely comprehend using sticks as crude tools.”

“Humanoids were never meant to live in space,” Alexis added to Walker’s explanation. “Our bodies need natural air and sunlight. We recycle the air on the ship but it lacks the small minute things in the air that allow our bodies to adapt and improve. We can take in vitamin D through our foods but our bodies were designed to absorb it through sunlight. So the natural UV lights in the arboretum provide some of that, and the plants provide us with real naturally occurring air which keeps our lungs healthy and working optimally, the way nature designed.”

Kyle nodded thoughtfully, “Well, I’m no green fingered gardener, but I’d be happy to help if I can?”

-Lieutenant Kyle Anders: Security Officer-

Brad laughed. “They had to give me potted plants with Smart Pots that would yell at me when they needed something for my office. I’m not exactly Art Drysdale myself. We’re just going to enjoy the scenery, not help grow it. Well, not actively help grow it, just by going in there and breathing we’re going to be helping grow it.”

Entering the arboretum Frigga took off into the foliage. She could be heard crashing about and then suddenly appeared in front of them again, ball in her mouth. She ran up to them and dropped the ball, tail wagging moving her whole body with it. She backed up a step from the ball and waited for someone to grab it and throw it for her.

Frigga

Bonner watched as Frigga took off and was not surprised when she returned with the ball. It was Frigga’s most prized possession. She reached down to grab it and Frigga snatched it away and dropped the ball in front of Walker and Anders. Bonner shrugged and flashed a grin at the dog, but spoke to Walker, “I said she would be happy to have someone around who throws better than me.”

Brad picked up the ball and tossed it in the air to himself underhand a couple of times, to gauge its weight. He noticed how Frigga’s eyes tracked the ball as he did so.

“Is that so?” he asked, before pitching the ball in a lazy arc to land about 30 meters away. “Fetch, girl!”

Frigga took off after the ball, and when it landed she watched it waiting to see what direction it bounced in. When it didn’t she picked it up as she ran past it and disappeared again.

As Anders crossed the threshold into the Arboretum and watched with a wide grin as Frigga went to catch the ball, he was initially taken aback by the sheer number of plants in the room around him. Several fauna samples around the room didn’t look at all familiar to the young Yorkshireman; he wanted to ask questions, but could see how excitable Frigga was, “Happy to keep an eye on her if you want me to Lieutenant?”

Bonner shrugged with a grin. “You’re welcome to, but it’s not necessary. Frigga won’t leave the arboretum without permission. You can go where ever, she’s more likely to find you. Or go visiting and then find you.” Bonner heard someone call Frigga and off the dog went after she retrieved her ball. “The arboretum is too nice to just stand around waiting for her.”

Frigga came pelting out of the plants again from the opposite direction and dropped the ball in front of them again, picked it up and tossed it in the air, kind of, and it bounced and rolled back to them. She waited, eyes darting from Anders, Walker, Bonner, and back to the ball.

Frigga

Knowing what to listen for Alexis heard Frigga returning. “Ah, there she is. Frigga has lots of friends and lives making more. She’s pretty familiar with the arboretum. She helps with a lot of therapy sessions in here.”
