With a chuckle Séan shook his head. “Neither have I, except for some friendly sparring but certainly not like I used to. My point though is that there is more than one way to cope with emotions, negative and otherwise, and that’s taking into account the various meditation techniques too. Vulcan meditation works for you sure, but what else have you tried?”

CoP Iven

“I had to keep a diary, do more human style breathing exercises, the PATH technique…” Solal’s parents had taken him to a child psychologist on earth, when he was ten. The other methods they had tried hadn’t worked very well.

“When was it decided that you’d try Vulcan meditation?” Séan inquired. “Who taught you how to do it?”

CoP Iven

”…I was twelve,” Solal answered finally. “Why are you so interested in my meditation?” He understood Séan didn’t agree with it, but he seemed very set on learning more about how Solal meditated.

“I want to know how and why you deal with your mental health. Doing it during a casual conversation as the topic came up pretty organically seemed like the best opportunity for doing so. As exasperating as it may be, people tend to prefer a more casual approach.” Séan shrugged his shoulders slightly. “It’s a professional habit that’s been grilled into me. I’m always thinking about others and how to best help them anyway.”

CoP Iven

“Even on a ship you’ve just arrived on, to someone you’ve just met.” By ‘prefer a casual approach’ Solal supposed he meant that a lot of people never spoke to ship counselors or psychologists unless they had to. He certainly didn’t. “Mental health topics tend to be… personal.” Solal said, turning to look at Séan.

“The way I look at, if I wasn’t willing to jump right in to getting to know someone and learning about them from the moment I step onto the ship, then would I be less willing under other circumstances? I of course watch out for my own needs so that I stay at top effectiveness, but being of service at all times is necessary.” Séan shrugged again. “I never push beyond what someone is unwilling to talk about. Mental health has a stigma behind it that if you have a problem then something is wrong with you, but there should always be the availability for dialog with someone who won’t judge you and can maybe give you a helpful tip or hint if you need it.”

CoP Iven

“That’s… Reasonable.” Being from Earth, Solal was well aware of those stigmas. Of course, it would probably be worse on Vulcan, where unless there was a such thing as Vulcan schizophrenia, most things would likely be considered illogical. “You asked what social events I get invited to. I did spend time with someone, but he was transferred.” Solal said and shrugged.

Séan nodded in partial understand. “What was he like?”

CoP Iven

Solal thought for a moment, but when he tried to describe Achilleas, all he could think of was that fungus fueled tea party. “He’s… interesting.” He still was not going to bring up the violin, either, and that made it difficult to think of anything to say.

Séan scrunched his face in thought for a moment before rapid firing some descriptor questions. “Interesting in what way? Happy? Sad? Neurotic? Energetic? Depressed? Skilled? Bumbling? Introvert? Extrovert?”

CoP Iven

“Extroverted, I suppose. Happy might fit.” He was not very good at describing people. “He was the ship’s Chief Science Officer.” He tried to think of something else to say, after all he had at least known the guy several months, but he couldn’t.

“Mm.” Séan vocalized. “Shame he transferred. I would’ve like to have met him. Was he a friend?”

CoP Iven

“I… think so?” He was someone Solal liked spending time with, that’s all that mattered. Whether they were friends or not, he didn’t really know. He wondered if Achilleas had considered him a friend. He was pretty sure he did. “He introduced me to his girlfriend, at the time.”

~ Lt JG Solal, Doctor

“Oh?” Séan perked up a bit. He wasn’t immune to some gossip afterall. “How did that go?”

CoP Iven

Solal shrugged. “Alright.” It had been a friendly lunch, but after Achilleas’ transfer he hadn’t continued spending time with her. There wasn’t anyone else he spent time with on the ship.

Séan smiled then moved a hand over his mouth as he stifled a yawn. “I think my body is telling me it’s time to get some sleep. I enjoyed this conversation thoroughly though. If you find yourself needing someone to talk to or need a reason to get out of your quarters, please do give me a call.”

CoP Iven

“Good night,” said Solal. He didn’t really intend on giving Séan ‘a call’ just then, but he appreciated the offer. Standing from his stool, he decided he might as well head off as well, after all, it was getting late.
