It had been about three weeks since Lieutenant Kyle Anders had first come aboard the USS Ogawa, and he found he was settling in nicely. With a significant crew change over in the past few days, Kyle had been unable to check in with one of the Ogawa‘s newest psychiatrists, Doctor Mariah Grayson. Anders didn’t know much about the Psych creew on board, so was eager to learn all that he could while at the same time making sure that he was still ok to perform his duties as the regular on duty Security Officer. So, after a quick check in at the Security Office to clock out of his most recent stint on patrol, Kyle checked his uniform in the mirror and made his way up to the Psychiatry Suite on Deck 7. When he arrived, he noticed a receptionist manning a desk behind the set of double entrance doors and jogged up with a grin, “Afternoon, Lieutenant Kyle Anders, here to see Counsellor Grayson?”

-Lieutenant Kyle Anders: Security Officer-

The young human female Ensign offered a polite smile. “I will tell Dr. Grayson you are here. She’s been expecting you.”

Indeed, Mariah had been expecting the young security officer and was intrigued when she found his name on her schedule. As a matter of routine, she had made a point to familiarize herself with most of the crew’s profiles, and although young, Anders certainly had an interesting background. From what she had gathered through the Grapevine, Kyle had also made his mark amongst the crew.

The double doors hissed open and the psychiatrist emerged, offering her own polite smile. “Hello. I’m Dr. Mariah Grayson. Care to follow me back to my office? I think it will be a bit more comfortable there.”

“Certainly Doc,” Kyle said with a smile, “Lieutenant Kyle Anders,” he’d extended a hand.

-Lieutenant Kyle Anders: Security Officer-

Mariah accepted his handshake with a firm one of her own. It didn’t take long for her to lead him into her office and as she gestured for him to take a seat in any one of the available chairs in her reception area, she asked, “May I get you something from the replicator?” As Grayson waited for his answer, she wondered how this meeting was going to go. In her experience, people could be quite reluctant and resistant, or at least open to building rapport with her as a first step. She expected as a security officer, Anderson could have significant trauma that perhaps wasn’t even all in his file.

“Just a cappuchino would be lovely,” Anders replied with a smile, “Busy day so far?”

-Lieutenant Kyle Anders: Security Officer-

Mariah headed to the replicator and made the order easily enough. As she waited for his cappuccino to materialize, she turned address his question. “I keep quite busy,” she answered with a nod. “On a medical vessel, there is no shortage of emotional needs to address. How about you? Is working as a security officer aboard a medical vessel what you expected?”

Kyle chuckled, “Well, considering my brief stint as Chief on board the Challenger, it certainly has proved to be a lot quieter, though I must admit, I do feel like I’m missing out on opportunities to get my hands dirty.”

Turning back from the replicator after having retrieved his drink, she walked over to the reception area, considering his reply. She handed his drink to him and offered, “Literally or figuratively?” She asked with a mischievous smile. She had no doubt Kyle had been through more serious experiences than this initial conversation might suggest, but Grayson saw no reason not to keep it light to start with in an effort to build rapport.

“A bit of both if I can help myself,” Kyle chuckled, “What about you? How are you finding your first few shifts on the Ogawa?”

-Lieutenant Kyle Anders: Security Officer-

Recognizing deflection when she saw it, no matter how polite, Grayson considered how to reply. She didn’t want to rebuff his polite interest so early in the relationship, but she was curious how long he would try to keep the focus on her. “Challenging, but rewarding. I love talking with people and just getting to know them better, helping them get to know themselves and even address challenges better, even if they aren’t quite sure how to feel about meeting with me.”

“Believe it or not, I’m the same, I think I get the trait of being a chatty person from my father.” Kyle smiled whistfully, “He was always introducing me to his officer friends on the Nightengale, giving it the old: ‘My lad’s going to make a fine officer one day’ routine.”

-Lieutenant Kyle Anders: Security Officer-

Mariah smiled. “It can be wild to realize just how like our parents we are. Many Meanwell, but even the most loving parents can still create pressure on us.”

Kyle chuckled, ‘It’s because of that pressure that I can draw a phaser like Billy the Kid. What about you, did your parents always want you to go into Psychiatry?’

Grayson smiled. “I’ll make you a deal. For every two questions I ask and you answer, I’ll let you ask one of me. Sound OK? I’m curious to learn more about the pressure you experienced.” She didn’t mind the evaluation serving as a conversation, but she needed to make sure he wasn’t straying from the true purpose of their meeting, however politely.

“Damn, my plan has been revealed,” Kyle chuckled. He kept his expression warm as he said, “Managing a team of security cadets could become… fast paced at times, but I like to feel like I got used to it as my time on the Challenger went on.”

OOC Lori: Sorry, Kieron, real life swallowed me up. I’m still here, though. :-)

Mariah noticed his hesitation and wondered if he was trying to censor himself purposely to minimize what he had experienced. She smiled. “Fast paced is a reference to speed, not emotional pressure. I do appreciate the way you’re looking on the bright side, but I can’t help but get the feeling we’re skipping to the end of a story I haven’t even begun to hear yet.”

~Doctor Mariah Grayson, Psychiatrist

OOC: No worries Lori! I’m feeling that myself

Kyle smiled, “I’m telling you all I can Doctor, but I must admit, I found myself making simple mistakes at times, maybe that was down to the pressure of joining the Academy?”

-Lieutenant Kyle Anders: Security Officer-

Grayson resisted the urge to ask him what he thought, not wanting to be too flip when they were still building rapport. That would be a question perhaps for later. Instead, she offered, “What do you think you said to yourself at those times… when you made simple mistakes?”

Kyle found a corner of the room to focus on as he thought, “I knew I just needed to take a breath and establish where I was going wrong and seek help from the officers I came to call my friends, I’m grateful to have met them.”

Mariah didn’t miss the fact Kyle chose not to look at her. It wasn’t difficult to see he was looking beyond her as he spoke. The question was why. Grayson knew she didn’t know him well enough to know he was lying, but something seemed off. “What’s that like for you? Asking for help?”
