She had waited a long time for her life to come into better focus. In some respects, Dira knew that the day Paige died, she had shifted towards maintaining the status quo (after leaving the USS Eldridge of course) . She had coasted along doing the work she was good at because to think of more, dream of more was to also dream of a life that didn’t include Paige and for a very long time it was an unbearable idea, even if she couldn’t see he situation for what it was: unhealthy coping.

For a moment, Dira enjoyed the silence and let it be what it was before she replied, her voice pensive. “I think I am exactly where I need to be, even if at times it is uncomfortable. I’ve taken a huge risk, moving away from patient care into leadership, and I do believe that I need to give myself time to adjust and let things settle in, find my footing and also allow myself the room to make mistakes and learn exactly who I am as a leader.”

Commander Myqian, XO

“It seems like you’re doing a fine job so far. But it makes sense it’s an adjustment. With a long career in one field, all your training there, it follows that there’s trepidation while you’re figuring out the new role. I don’t know if it’s true, but I’ve always thought that trained counselors have a slight advantage headed into command. Knowing how to speak diplomatically, but clearly. Working with people from all over a ship… Again no idea if it’s actually true, just a hunch.”

Dira grinned. “I would say it’s predominantly true. But the difference is that we’re typically used to a clinical setting, where we’re evaluating and allowing a person to work towards their own need and goals. Command is very similar, but there’s more people involved in the chain of command. More egos to balance and outcomes to work towards. Mostly I’m just trying to find out what my own unique flavour of leadership is, as I’ve not had a lot of opportunities to stretch and test them out until recently. I do’t know that being a therapist is so much different, but the approach certainly is.”

Commander Myqian, XO

“I’m sure you’ll find your way.” Drake said. “You see, that’s why I’m avoiding Command. Surgeons work alone, and we’re built out of ego and lack of sleep. Not exactly fit for the center chair. I’d rather leave the counselors in charge.”
