Aware of the small focused shift in Willow, she reached out and took the bread. “Thank you,” Myqian said, both for the bread and Willow’s words. Did she expect it to be an issue? Not really. And yet she knew that when her and Zoi became more public, they would need to tread with caution. She knew they could handle it though. “Romantic relationships on a starship can be complicated. It’s been so long since I’ve had anything more than a fling, I feel a little like I’m adrift. Maybe it’s because I’m quite a bit older than before. I know I am approaching this with more caution, yes, but also wisdom.”

“Cation is always wise, however people will adapt. And if they have issues they can take it up with me.” She smiled.

It was tacit approval and for a reason she’d examine later, Dira felt a surge of excitement run through her.

“What about you?” Dira asked gently, unsure whether their new working relationship was too new still to get this personal. Her instinct was that it would be alright though.

This seemed to startle Willow slightly. “Me? I’m not sure I’m ready for a relationship again.” She lowered her gaze and sighed. “In fact Im not sure if my previous relationship is over or sort of hanging in the voice of nothing and something all at once. I…it’s complicated.” She said her thoughts drifting to Doug.

Dark eyes taking in her captain and (she hoped) friend. “Oh? You can talk about it with me if you want to. But you don’t have to, of course. But I’m pretty good at giving perspective, or just listening when needed.”

Willow seemed to consider her next words careful,y as she busied her hands with the task of building a sandwich like snack on a cracker. “I was engaged. Bit of a whirlwind romance really. We met and moved in together within a year…engaged soon after. He’s at medical on Earth. When I was called in and offered the refit if the McCoy to test the waters as it were for this beauty…” she looked around her appreciation clear on her expression. “Well I never thought I’d be offered the chance to serve as a commanding office again…I agreed on the provision I could take Doug…” she paused. “That’s him…Commander Doug Greene, anyway…on the provision I could take him and Cai with me. He’s serving as an attending in emergency medicine at starfleet medical. He was my first choice for chief of staff…but he did t like that idea and well.” She looked at her snack, appetite gone suddenly. “ let’s just say we argued…and I left. He has t returned any of my messages or letters.”

Brows lifted, pushing against the bulges and ridges of her forehead, Dira was honestly surprised. “What was his reason for not wanting to go?” she asked, tending towards the more generous assumption of Doug’s motivations out of practice, but also knowing that people could be selfish at times and sometimes compromise was not a word on the table.

Willow sighed and became very interested in the cheese on her bread. “His career was solid no mistakes and mine well…let’s just say it isn’t the shining beacon id like it to be. He more or less is waiting for the other shoe to drop on this as it were and didn’t want to uproot himself for a ‘flight of fancy’ or for ‘my desire to see the stars’”

She bit a little more ruthlessly than she normally would into the bread and chewed.

“Yikes! Ouch!” Dira said, brows flying towards her hairline. “Not exactly what you want to hear from someone you’re supposed to share your life with.” She was speaking as a friend after all, and not a therapist. She wasn’t interested in this moment about Doug’s motivations, but how his words and actions affected someone she cared about and was getting to know. “That sounds like a strong set of irreconcilable differences.”
