Solal had once again taken to the lounge, though today it was because he needed the table space. There really wasn’t much in the way of cleared off flat surfaces in his quarters. Sitting at an empty table in the corner of the lounge he fiddled with a deck of playing cards. One did not grow up on Earth without learning at least a few card games and Solal was no exception. Shuffling the deck, he set up a round of solitaire, using the empty space for the card spread.

Some time later, his current round was nearly finished. It was a good way to waste time. Solal rarely played with anyone else, he’d found rather quickly that people didn’t like when one was good enough with memory and numbers to know how to win a game of poker. But he had always liked the games, and a deck of cards did not take up much space. In fact, it fit right in the pocket of his violin case, the very violin he preferred never to tell anyone about. When he’d won the game of solitaire, he switched games, playing himself in the card game of war.

Séan entered the lounge in uniform and after a long day of counselling. His quarters was close enough to the psychiatry suite that he could’ve changed but he didn’t look forward to being alone, so instead he headed straight to the lounge. It was probably a bit of irony that he was tired after dealing with people and their problems but still wanted to be around people.

After picking up a drink with a bit of strength to it, he surveyed the lounge to look for a quiet perch to watch people. Imagine his surprise to see the half Vulcan crewmate with a card game going. He was one part intrigued and another part mischievous in his decision to wander over to Solal’s table. Afterall, Solal hadn’t come in for a check-up and soon Séan would have to hunt him down anyway. Why not preempt that?

“Hi there. Who’s winning?” Séan asked in his baritone voice.

CoP Iven

The voice was instantly recognisable to Solal, and yet he found himself looking up to check and see that he was right in who it was. And all of a sudden, he wondered why he hadn’t learned his lesson about hanging around the lounge the first time. He bit back a rather sarcastic answer and instead replied, “It’s war, the game is little more than one of chance. Though for the record, it seems most likely that deck will win.” He pointed to the opposite side of his own half of the deck as he played another draw. From his side, a ten of hearts, and from the opposite deck a queen of clubs was drawn.

Séan nodded slowly. “I see.” He didn’t really see. This card game made no sense to him in the slightest.

He shifted topics next by asking. “Do you mind if I have a seat?”

CoP Iven

“Not at all,” he said, and he gestured to one of the other chairs at the table. He was not in uniform for once, a rare sight. Instead, he wore a plain off-white t-shirt and a pair of dark colored jeans. Solal’s cards had dwindled to nearly none and in another few moments, the game concluded in the way he had predicted: the opposite hand won. He shuffled the deck together. “Do you play cards?”

Séan sat down on one of the seats across from Solal and nodded again. “One of the ways to keep yourself entertained on cargo runs. My dad and I played a variety of different card games, when I wasn’t hitting the education programs, and there were only a couple of fights because one of us thought the other was cheating.” He smiled at the memories before he took another sip of his drink.

“I have been accused of cheating, multiple times,” Solal said with a shrug. “Card games were popular where I went to school. What games do you like?” He shuffled the deck one more time before setting it down in front of himself. Most games required more than two people, but it seemed a good conversation starter.

Séan reached out and cut the deck then put the bottom half onto the top. “Poker, black jack, old maid, spades, almost any variety of two person games. Which would you like to play? Do you need a drink before we get started?”

CoP Iven

Solal thought about the games Séan listed. He often mixed up spades and hearts. Old maid and poker games were better suited to at least three players in Solal’s opinion, so he went with the remaining option. “Black jack. And no thank you.” Solal did not generally partake in the drinking of alcohol and he wasn’t in the mood for a soda or tea just then.

Séan picked the deck up, discarded the top card, then dealt one down for Solal, one up for himself, one up for Solal, and a last one up for him. Solal was showing an eight of diamonds, while Séan’s were showing a seven of hearts and a jack of spades. He looked expectantly at Solal to see if you wanted to hit or stay.

Solal considered the cards for a moment and then indicated for a ‘hit’. “What else did you do for fun on cargo runs?” It was his attempt to make polite conversation over the game.
