Having finished all of the other items on the list of onboarding a new she, Laurali found herself standing outside the Counselor’s office and debating on putting this off til another day. She had been in therapy most of her life because of her younger brother who had special needs. She sighed and rang the chime on the door and waited. Hoping that this would go quickly and she could get to work.

“Come in,” Mariah called out, the doors automatically opening upon her command. She was on call today to provide the boarding evaluations for the new arrivals, a task she loved because it gave her an opportunity to meet new people and to hear new stories. Grayson had also learned a new psychiatrist had boarded, the most recent among a series of mental health professionals that seemed to come and go with the ease of a changing wind. For now, however, there was someone else to meet. She smiled. “Hello, I’m Doctor Mariah Grayson.”

Laurali teturned the greeting “Ensign Laurali Breeden reporting for the boarding evaluation.” She said after stepping into the office.

“Please, make yourself comfortable,” Mariah replied, gesturing to her seating area with any number of available seats. “May I get you something from the replicator?”

Laurali took a seat in one of the arm chairs “A cappuccino please.” She said one of the few types of coffee she drank. She settled in while the counselor got the beverage from the replicator and waited to see how this went. Each psychiatrist had their own methods and it was interesting for Laurali to see which method she used.

The request was easily fulfilled and soon Mariah was sitting across from the security officer after handing her the warm cup. “I imagine as a security officer, the caffeine can prove useful,” she opened with a smile.

Laurali nodded “It can come in handy when you are working the gamma shift for six months in a row.” She said taking a long drink of the coffee “I usually try to not drink it when I’m working other shifts, just trying to keep things on an even keel.” She said leaning back in her chair and crossing her legs and folding her hands in her lap.

Mariah wondered if she offered that last bit of information in response to any potential criticism or concern Grayson might offer about her caffeine use, but the psychiatrist nodded in understanding. She had no reason to jump to such conclusions and was in fact far more interested in something else the security officer had offered, “That seems like a long time to be working that same shift. Your choice or someone else’s?” She asked sympathetically.
