With her easel under arm and the fresh paint sent she’d replicated ‘Tai (pronounced Tay) strolled through the corridors wearing a bright striped mix of colour jumper, shorts and a messy painting apron which itself looked like a work of art (if you called an endless explosion of paint smears and splatters.) She was on her way to the arboretum to do some painting. She’d grown fond of it since being joined and found she was actually pretty good, that among other new talents she’d not had before. Her previous hosts interest seemed to flow easily through her young mind.

Finding the doors to her destination Octavia entered looking for a fresh set of foliage to paint, she preferred painting vast backdrops however being on a star ship limited her to small and not so impressive rooms,so she had to improvise. Tai often found inspiration from the plants here and then created a fictional location sometimes a valley, mountain range or just a vast jungle. Either way she enjoyed painting and found it was an amazing way to unwind.

Setting up her easel she found a beautiful assortment of Denobulan Lillies which could be used to make a numbing gel that cooled the skin and great for burns. Lost in her world she began to apply paint to paper.

Frigga had been very busy, just the way she liked it. She’d been following GALEN’s whistles back and forth across the ship all day. She got to meet a lot, in her opinion, new people, and spend time with some people she liked a lot. That was nothing compared to spending time with her favorite people. However, today her mommy and the steak keeper were busy, and Frigga liked to be busy too. She liked it a lot more than when she used to have to sit in the quarters she had with Mommy and wait for her. Of course she liked Ogawa a whole lot better than the Hathaway, and even though Giliv had grass and fresh air, mommy was scared there so she didn’t mind floating around in the tin can. And the arboretum more than made up for it.

Whilst she painted Octavia always frowned and bit the bottom of her lip, with every few strokes she’d step back and asses her work before mixing a new colour or shade to add to the canvas. She was completely lost in her work, not realising how much time passed nor the paint which didn’t make it onto the canvas rather onto her clothes and face. She herself looked just as painted as the canvas in front of her.

Frigga had been helping with a physical therapy session for a brand new patient who was learning to use a fake leg. Frigga thought that was amazing! It was lots of fun for her, she got to wear this large metal frame and the person…Phillis she thought the doctor said, held onto the frame and Frigga got to help her walk. When they were done the doctor took the frame off and told Frigga to go play. She bounded around between shrubs and flowers and the occasional bush that was big enough to be a tree. Until she sniffed something that made her nose crinkle and she snorted. Then a wiff of someone familiar. Frigga bounded over and the next time Octavia would look up Frigga would be staring at her from behind the shrub she was painting, head thrust through, body behind, head tipped to the side, tongue lolling out as she panted.

Frigga

Octavia finished another stroke and looked up, the sight of Frigga made her laugh out loud as she cupped her free hand to her face. All she could see was Friggas round face poking beyond the shrubbery. “Oh Frigga” She said placing down her brush and palette before rubbing her rather messy hands on her trousers to cleanse them of the wet paint. The last thing she needed was having to explain why Frigga was now an assortment of Green, blues and reds. “How are you doing girl.” ‘Tai said with a grin as she moved as close as she could to the bed without getting in it herself. Holding out her hand she tried to coax Frigga from the shrubs.

Frigga’s tongue lolled out and she looked like she was laughing. Her head disappeared back behind the plant and then a moment later, still wearing her green working vest Frigga trotted out from behind all the greenery. She sniffed ‘Tai’s hand and sneezed. Frigga scrunched up her nose and tipped her head to the side before sniffing again and then backed up and yipped. Sniffing all over ‘Tai revealed the same strange odor. She walked around finding other spots of the strange smell: the canvas, paint bottles, and pallet. Frigga looked up at the canvas. The steak keeper made pictures, but his things didn’t smell funny. Frigga didn’t understand it, she thought chasing a ball was much more fun. Frigga walked back over to ‘Tai and sat. As much as she would love to give ‘Tai lots of love, she was obviously doing something, and Frigga still had her work vest on so she had to be very well behaved.

Frigga

Octavia sat down next to Frigga and smiled, “Oh Girl I’m sorry I can’t pet out, I don’t want to get you covered in paint” She explained before standing up again and quickly grabbing the half-dried, half-finished painting. “I’m painting see, don’t worry though it’s non-toxic and water-based.” She added as if Frigga understood what those words meant exactly. “See here is the shrub you were playing in, and this is the stem of the Denobulan Lillies, I like to do all the greens first before finishing it with the flowers, which makes mixing the paints messy.” She looked down at her chest and hands, “Which I guess I’m not doing very well at.” She chuckled. “So how’s your day going? Been anywhere fun? I’d love to be a dog for one day and just run around and do my own thing.” She chuckled. Octavia always enjoyed her own company, but she loved the Company of Frigga who seemed to get her, Frigga was Octavia’s self-declared spirit animal.

Frigga looked at the painting, head tilted to the side like she was listening. She looked at the real plant and then sniffed the painting again making her scrunch her nose. The real one smelled amazing why did ‘Tia want the smelly fake one? But maybe it made her feel better. Drawing made the Steak Keeper feel better. Frigga walked over to where the brush and paint was but didn’t pick it up, it was smelly but she batted a paw at it. Clearly encouraging ‘Tai to continue. Then she ran back around behind the plant sticking her head through it again, tail wagging furiously.

Frigga

‘Tai was giggling as she picked herself up and replaced the canvas back on the easel, she grabbed her brush and pallet and looked towards the shrubs which was now spouting a very cute and adorable Frigga head, “Oh I see you want me to paint you too!” She said smiling, she was a good painter though living objects with features were sometimes difficult to do however a good painter learned to adapt their style so she mixed some lighter fur colour paints that matches the dog and put paint to paper hoping to capture the cuteness of Frigga. After a few strokes she was already starting to see her face take shape.

Frigga yipped happily at ‘Tai’s words, as if she understood that ‘Tai had in fact understood her. After the first time that ‘Tai stepped back, Frigga came trotting around the bush to stand next to the girl and look up at the canvas. She still didn’t like the smell, but it was her job to help. So if standing the the flowers helped ‘Tai than that is what she would do. After the first time she looked she saw nothing different about the painting and was confused. Eventually though she saw herself begin to appear and she wagged her tail happily. She ran back to the flower and stuck her head through again, but of course every time she checked on ‘Tai she wasn’t in the same spot.

Frigga

Frigga’s positional change wasn’t lost on the young Trill, fortunately, she’d grown good at remembering and envisioning what something should look like and applying that to the canvas especially when you have a small therapy dog trampling the flower bed. ‘Tai would have to come back later and clear up, maybe add some supports to get the lillies back to their original strength. After a few more strokes the painting was complete (less for the protective gloss she always applied later). Taking the painting she crouched down and his it away from Frigga “Ok, no peaking. You’re a squirmy little thing and I’m not so good with living objects buuuuut.”

She turned the painting around to show Frigga. It wasn’t great, and Frigga appeared to be a lot fluffier in painting form than real life but there was a resemblance. The flowers however had a much finer detail which including shadings and the use of lighter tones. “See, this is you.” She added pointing to make sure Frigga knew where to look not that she doubted she wasn’t smart enough to figure it out for herself.

Frigga sat quietly while Octavia spoke to her. Head tilted like she understood. She stared at the painting and stretched out to sniff it, just slightly and sneezed. Then shook her head and it traveled her whole body and ended with her tail wagging and moving her whole back end. She whinned happily and then took off meeting an officer in medical blue. She knelt down next to Frigga and took off her vest, which caused Frigga to shiver and shake happily for several seconds. “You’re off work for today, Frigga. Your mommy said to stay here. I’ll leave your vest at the door.” She patted the dog and gave her a treat. “I’ve already told GALEN not to let you out till Lt Bonner comes to get you.” The PT shook her head, the dog was smart, too smart maybe. Frigga took off around the bend and then returned, trotting happily, right up to Octavia and dropped her ball at the girl’s feet.

Frigga

Having heard the exchange it was no surprise to her that Frigga returned, ‘Tai had grown quite accustomed to Frigga’s characteristics and activities so when she returned also with the ball the young trill smiled. “Is it that time already!” She teased rolling the ball from foot to foot teasing her. Octavia was quiet flexible so after a while she finally bent forward in the sitting position and reached the ball at her feet. “So how much do you reeeeaally want this ball?” She asked wiggling her eyebrows and shaking the ball in her hand.

Frigga whined, crouched as if to pounce and followed the movement of the ball back and forth. When Octavia bent forward, Frigga pounced down on her front legs and became very still. At ‘Tai’s question she leaped onto the girl, front paws on her shoulders and licked her all over the face while whining and her tail going almost at warp speed.

Octavia chuckled, “Ok ok, you win, you win!” She said in defeat before she pulled her arm back and threw the ball in a high arch.

Frigga pushed her 20 lbs of weight off of Octavia’s shoulders and spun bounding away after the ball. She ran and rustled through the plant life, chased by chuckles and encouragement from the people she passed. Soon Frigga was back running down the path and dropped the ball at ‘Tai’s feet. When she went to grab it Frigga snatched the ball up and spun a circle before dropping it again.

Frigga

‘Tai who had just sat back up from being pushed into the dirt was brushing the compost from her shirt and hair laughing. “Oh Frigga!” She exclaimed laughing still as her first attempts only prompted Frigga to tease her. She pouted sadly dirt and a leaf still in her hair, “That’s no fair!” She reached out again this time picking up the now slimy ball, “Has anyone told you that you’re so sloppy” For some reason, she decided to smell the ball and grimaced, “Yikes and maybe in need of a dentastix!” It was her turn to tease as she threw the ball again.
