And maybe that was it. The first one was just a trick, played on her. And this one was…not a trick but it was…or wasn’t…it was confusing. Her father would tell her to stop thinking with her head, but the rest of her was just as confused.

Meanwhile Cai now stood holding a large tube like thing that more resembled an old earth bazooka than a plant feeding tube. He tapped into the twinkling computer components and then removed his mini PaDD from the attached wires and taped them down.

“Ok…so if I got the components of the plants correct…not so sure about that Pyrathrum hispida…it’s a bit drier than I thought it would be. I wonder if the moisture settings need tweaked…” he became distracted a second looking at the overhead water systems that maintained the atmospheric moisture levels. Shaking the electric blue hair out of his eyes as he remembered what he was supposed to be doing he bent down and taking Frigga’s ball popped it into the tube.

“Anyway as I was saying…if I got this right you’re gunna have to run as fast as you can to get this one. If it’s not right well let’s just say you’ll need to run as well but in the opposite direction….” and aimed the thing across the arboretum.

A boom sounded followed by a whistling as a flaming tennis ball shot by fairly close. Emergency internal klaxons sounded. She pulled up short and took a few running steps second to regain her balance and not fall. Spinning around she sought the source of the commotion.

“Oh no…please…” willow whispered more for herself than anything. “CAI…WHAT THE HELL DID YOU DO!” She yelled.

Alexis come to an abrupt halt and heard Frigga barking loudly and turned and took off toward Cai and Frigga. She also heard the exclamations of the other people in the arboretum.

Cai, his hair sticking up slightly and his face a little blackened with pollen and soot. “Well £@&” he muttered and coughed. “The moisture levels were off. “ he coughed to Frigga.

Willow and Cai

Frigga’s tail was down and almost tucked. Human pups are not safe on their own. Someone needs to keep an eye on him. He set my ball on fire! She whined and then seeing Alexis she barked twice and stopped and then twice again and stopped. “Good girl Frigga.” It’s her signal that everything was fine. Taylor could check her brother. Alexis took off at a jog, calling Frigga with her, to the other side where the flaming ball had landed. There were a couple people around. “Anyone hurt?” she asked above the klaxons. There were several ‘no’s‘ as Alexis checked them each one by one, but one little girl who was crying. “She’s okay Dr Bonner, it sound just scared her. What was it?” Alexis knelt down next to Frigga, “Frigga, help,” and she pointed to the little girl. This Frigga could do. She walked over and then laid on her belly, tail up and wagging and whined until the girl looked at her and then she crawled over so the the little girl could pet her. “I’m not sure. I heard the boom and then saw a flaming ball go past.” One of the botanist was putting out the fire on the ball and examining the plants it had landed in with a sigh. “I think it will be alright.”

“GALEN” =/\=Yes Dr Bonner?=/\= “Cancel medical assistance call, there are no injuries as of this moment.” =/\=Should I cancel the alert klaxons?=/\= “Not until Cpt Taylor tells you to.” =/\=Thank you Dr Bonner.=/\=

Alexis took the burnt ball and left Frigga with the little girl and made her way back towards Cpt Taylor checking with anyone she passed to make sure they were alright. More being startled than injury. Approaching Taylor and her brother Alexis shook her head, no injuries, and waited.

While Alexis dealt with those present Willow stalked to her brother, her cheeks coloured from a mix of her run, the anger and the embarrassment. “What we’re you thinking!” She growled as she quickly checked him for injuries.

The teen scowled and held his now damaged invention to one side. “Nothing I was just playing with the damn dog.” He roughly yanked his head from her grip. And shook his head as he noted her eyes travel down to the device he held.

“You damaged ships property to make that! Cai…do you want me to lose my command is that it? Is this sabotage or what?”

“No.” He scowled.

“Then what?”

“I was just planing with the damn dog!” He reiterated loudly,

Willow sighed, satisfied he wasn’t hurt. =^= GALEN, cancel alert. Notify security teams and the bridge everything’s ok.= ^= she said.

Once the computer had complied she said firmly, her tone and expression taking in the one she used to tell off crew members who had been in trouble. “You need to go back to our quarters. I’ll decide what to do with you then.”

For his part, Cai gave both Willow and Alexis a sullen look, shook his head out of his eyes and muttered.”yeah whatever.” Then stalked off before anyone could say another word.

Alexis met his gaze, slightly perplexed for less than half a second and then she understood. Alexis had a rare moment of accurate empathy. She knew that look, wore it most of her childhood. He was alone and no one understood him. He was frustrated and it made him angry, and he didn’t know how to tell or who to tell. She watched him leave, not sure how to help.

Willow watched him go stoically then held her hands up in a placating gesture to those still in the arboretum and when they had started to move back on with their morning she deflated. Hunching her shoulders. “I am so sorry…is Frigga ok.” She asked Alexis

Alexis blinked from where she was watching Cai leave. Then she glanced down at Frigga who had just joined them. She sniffed around and whined running toward the door and back. Alexis bent down and pet her, “Yeah yeah go on.” Frigga took off like a shot after the already disappeared teen. She stood up and looked at Taylor, “Frigga’s fine. Just surprised I think and maybe a little sad about her ball. I think she’s more happy to have made a new friend.” Alexis paused and then took a breath, “Captain…your brother…he’s smart?” The way she said it made it sound like a very personal and specific descriptor. Smart like she was.

“I will replace the ball of course!” Willow started to say. She took a breath mid sentence and then nodded. “He is yes…smarter than I am anyway.” She said with a humourless laugh. “He…tends to get himself into trouble no matter what outlet we give…Uhh..” she looked around, wrapping her hands around her arms she said. “Maybe I should…” she looked at the door. “Or we should continue this conversation somewhere else?” She asked.

Alexis shook her head. “It cost 1 credit for five of them. She has more. I just keep them out of reach or she would leave them scattered all over the ship.” She seemed distracted but in actuality she was considering Cai. She nodded in agreement. “I know where we can go.” Maybe Solomon was rubbing off on her, but the way Taylor was holding her arms made Alexis think that a drink might be in order. She wasn’t sure though, but even Alexis knew that wanting to talk somewhere else meant Taylor wanted privacy.

They took the lift to deck 3, forward starboard section. Alexis approached the door, the sign read Lt. Solomon Kane, CSO. The door slid open, lights on full, and she stepped inside. All the windows were closed and the quarters were empty. “Please have a seat, Cpt. I don’t really know about making a drink choice, or what all is in the cabinet, but would you like something or from the replicator?”
