OOC: I am separating patient types just to keep things sorted

IC: Lampkin waved forward the next two patients.

First was a young child and her mother. The mother explained that due to shortages her children hadn’t received the common inoculations for Romulan children and was hoping they could help. This pair was handed a green card that read Medical and was ushered to take a seat.

Another patient of note that came in was an old man with a hunched back. He had suffered failing organs for some time, but had run out of medication some time ago. He personally was resigned on the topic but he had been henpecked by his wife to come in and see what could be arranged. A yellow card with Medical was handed to the man and he took a seat.

Bonner walked into the main waiting area. Surgical, internal, and psych. After making sure that someone from psych had been notified they had patients she walked over to the small desk where Lampkin was triaging patients and gave her a polite nod. Alexis could help with the surgical patients if need be, but Dr. Marshall was more than capable of handling the surgical staff. If he needed help, he would ask. Bonner picked up the information on the older gentleman. She stopped the nearest nurse, “Get a full blood work up and metabolic panel on him. Get a full history of the problem, types of medication he’s been on, and then do some imaging of his organs.” Alexis tapped her combadge. =/\=Bonner to Solal. I have a patient for you in room 2 of the internal medicine ward.=/\=

The nurse walked over to the older gentleman with a smile. “I’m Nurse Shayna. If you’ll come with me, we can get you in a room and Dr. Solal will be in to see you.”

The gentleman smiled and made his way towards the back room with the nurse. His gate was strained and everything about him just seemed tired, but off he went none the less.

That left Alexis with the mother and child. She walked over, taking a lollipop from Lampkin and dropping it in her pocket for later. Alexis wasn’t one much for smiles, but she was polite and professional and genuinely concerned. “I’m Dr. Bonner.” She waited for the woman to introduce herself and her daughter. She wished she had Frigga with her. If you’ll come with me, we’ll get your daughter a physical and her inoculations.” Alexis led the pair to the first exam room.

The mother and child nodded and stood, following Bonner, the child scooped up into the mother’s arms and striding along in short strides trying to keep up. Neither said anything just awaiting further direction from the doctor.

Alexis pushed open a small door to the exam room and stepped inside. “Will you sit up here on the bed for me?” She asked gently. “Your mom can sit with you if you want.
What’s your name?”

The girl answered in a quiet voice, “Nulla. And this is my mom, Pumek.” She gestured to the older woman before hopping on the biobed but watching Bonner intently .

“It’s very nice to meet you Nulla,” she looked over at the mother, “and Pumek.” All those Mandarin lessons with Kane made sure that she paid attention and picked up the nuances as the girl spoke their names and that Bonner pronounced them correctly. It might seem simple but correctly reproducing the sound of a persons name was simple but respectful of the patient. They were people, not cases or numbers.

She pulled out the hand scanner and asked the mother, “May I?” It was a small thing, but patient, or guardian in this case, consent was a big deal. Alexis waited for a response hoping the mother would introduce herself as well. “We will get her up-to-date with her inoculations and give her a full physical. Do you remember which ones she’s already had?” If not they could run a full antibody test on her, but Alexis knew doctors could seem really scary for children and didn’t want to upset her. Alexis knew first hand that fear could often be irrational and debilitating. “Other than getting her inoculations do you have any concerns?”

Pumek was a little taken aback by the question at first, assuming implied consent to treat but after a few moments of contemplation nodded and agreed. “Yes of course, you may proceed.” She paused again, “She got the ones required at birth and through her first year of life. The ones given at two and beyond are missing due to…” She waved her hand through the air randomly, “All of this. She is in good health otherwise, I believe.”

Bonner flipped open her tricorder and first she scanned for any sign of the viruses Nulla would be inoculated for today. If the girl was already sick different measures would need to be taken. There were all the normal ones that affected any species but there was also specific to Romulans the Terothka virus and the virus that caused Tuvan Syndrome. Bonner knew the water supply was contaminated so she checked the girl over to make sure nothing was wrong from the water or anything she’d eaten. She moved over to the storage cabinet and pressed her finger to the scanner and along with the signal from her combadge the cabinet opened. She started prepping the inoculations while the tricorder finished analyzing the results. “What is your favorite thing to eat, Nulla?” The girl was quiet and seemingly a little shy and Alexis could only imagine how scary seeing a hospital building land from space might be, so she tried to make it a little easier.

Nulla held out her hands with her finger tips touching making the shape of a sphere. “Apples,” she said excitedly before letting her hands drop to her side again as she craned her neck to see what the scary lady was hiding on the counter.

“I like apples too. Where I come from we have a saying, ‘an apple a day keeps the doctor away,’ because apples are so good for you. If your mother is okay with it, you can ask the nurse at the desk for apples.” In addition to the ready to eat meals they had brought fresh rations as well, and Alexis remembered seeing apples among the fruit.

The tricorder came back with the usual findings for a girl her age and condition. Slightly malnourished, dehydrated, and with antibodies present for the vaccines she had gotten. Some trace antibodies for other illnesses present, at least one from drinking contaminated water, but nothing that would prevent her from receiving her vaccines today.

Pumek sat quietly with her hands folded in her lap, suspiciously eyeing the shiny new mobile hospital, but, being a Romulan, perhaps that was just her neutral expression.

Alexis turned back with the hypo and vile and held them up for the little girl to see. “This goes into the hypospray and has all the vaccines your mom wants you to have. They will help your body create antibodies to fight off different diseases so if they try to attack your body, you won’t get sick.” She looked at Pumek, “She has some vitamin deficiency and she has some slight infections. One from the contaminated water. If you are okay with me taking a blood sample, I can have the lab run a test on it and then I can give her something for it. She’s dehydrated as well, but nothing a few days of extra water won’t fix. We brought plenty of drinking water, you can take as much as you need.”

Once Pumek decided on whether or not she wanted Nulla to have the extra treatments, Alexis picked up the vaccine hypo and then she turned back to Nulla, “I’m going to press this to your skin and hit a button. It will only tingle a little, promise.” Alexis waited to make sure the girl was as calm as she could be. Alexis might not be great with kids but she didn’t want to scare her. Then she gave Nulla the hypo.

Turning to Pumek, “She’ll need boosters in five years. While you are here, do you want a physical for yourself?” There was no reason to treat the little girl for her mother to become ill, but she certainly couldn’t force Pumek to be seen.
