“So… People’s problems are more interesting.” That’s what Séan’s explanation boiled down to in Solal’s mind. “And you like stopping bad things from happening?” Solal wasn’t sure he understood, but then again he wasn’t surprised by that. “That makes little sense to me.”

~ Lt JG Solal

“Well… in a sense, but also because people sent to Starfleet Medical for long-term recovery have already been diagnosed. The diagnosis could be wrong of course but the chance of that is pretty minimal. The very early period of a person’s trauma recovery is as vital in mental health as it is in physical wellbeing. Intervening as early as possible with someone who has experienced trauma of some form can help to prevent issues from becoming deep seated in their psyche. It’s gratifying to help someone overcome a problem no matter how long it takes, but what if I could help end their pain much sooner?” Séan asked as he dealt the next hand. His cards were a 7 of hearts and a 8 of diamonds, while Solal’s up card was an ace of clubs. “I think psychiatry is very similar to medicine in that preventative care can really benefit people. A psych eval can pinpoint something that may need to be addressed as surely as a physical can.”

His down card was a nine of hearts. Solal had no clever reply this time and instead simply nodded and motioned to ‘stay’ in the card game. Séan sounded like he loved what he did. The way he described it did make it sound similar to medicine. Though, in Solal’s opinion, a mental problem probably wasn’t going to kill anyone. Not like a medical emergency.

Séan flipped a card onto his hand that was a five of spades. “How do you like being a doctor?” He asked in the silence that followed his rather long explanation.

“My parents were doctors,” said Solal. The statement did not answer the question. Solal considered how much one liked what they did an emotional sentiment. It was logical for him to do, to follow in the footsteps of the people who raised him. He nearly volleyed the question back, a tactic he’d learned on Earth to seem more friendly, but he realized he already knew the answer. Séan seemed to love his job.

“Your parents were doctors.” Séan parroted back. He could’ve pointed out to Solal that he hadn’t in any way answered his question, but figured Solal probably knew that. Instead he just repeated the statement and dealt the next hand. Solal’s up card was a three of clubs while Séan’s were a nine of hearts and five of clubs. Séan then looked at Solal expectantly, either to hit, stand, or further answer the question.

CoP Iven

The statement was a way of pointing out that Solal hadn’t answered the question. Solal’s down card was a two of diamonds. He motioned for a hit. Then he shrugged. “Isn’t it logical to follow the path of one’s parents?” That was, more or less, why he’d chosen to be a doctor, though if he’d followed his parents footsteps and acted fully logically, he wouldn’t have joined Starfleet. That was something he chose because he wanted to, and because he liked it.

~ Lt JG Solal, Doctor

Séan thought about that question while he flipped another card for Solal, it was a four of hearts. “I think that the logic of following your parents’ path would be feasible if a few requirements were met. An aptitude for the field they’re in, an enjoyment of the field, a motivation that that path benefits you or those around you, and maybe a way to keep sane. So I don’t rightly know. Is it logical to follow your parents’ path?”

CoP Iven

“Enjoyment is an emotion, and irrelevant to the logic of a decision,” Solal said. “It was a logical decision.” He motioned for another hit. Meditation counted as ‘a way to keep sane’ in Solal’s mind but that could be done anywhere. He wasn’t sure what his motivation for his path was. He did like it, or he doubted he would have made it this far in medicine.

~ Lt JG Solal, Doctor

“I don’t know that I’d say enjoyment is an emotion per se. Happiness certainly is and enjoyment can lead to happiness, but I imagine Vulcans still enjoy things. Food perhaps. While it is logical to have a balanced diet that meets all of your dietary needs, would it not be logical to enjoy the meal as well? Sure you could eat oatmeal and fruit every morning, but you could also have variety that still meets those needs and tastes good. Why drink just one type of tea and not experience a variety?” Séan flipped another card for Solal, this one being an eight of clubs.

CoP Iven

“One type of tea is all that’s needed,” said Solal, shrugging, “I’ve never cared much for varieties of food.” He motioned to stay in the card game. “I think you’re right, Vulcans do enjoy things. But I’d doubt they let it influence their decisions.” He flipped his down card when the time came and then handed the cards back. “Deal me out this round.” He made no move to leave, he’d apparently just lost interest in the game of cards.

~ Lt JG Solal, Doctor

Séan collected the cards to put them neatly back into the deck before he placed the deck exactly between himself and Solal. “I think a preference for something enjoyable would influence a decision if it made no difference in the end. Will I have chicken or steak tonight? Likely steak because it’s good and I’ve had chicken recently.” He took a sip of his drink. “What kind of tea do you prefer?”

CoP Iven

“Anything relaxing,” Solal replied. “Chamomeal is a good choice preferably later in the day.” He sat back in his chair, leaving his deck of cards on the table for now. “Do you drink tea?”

~ Lt JG Solal, Doctor

“I do.” Séan answered succinctly. “I enjoy a good Earl Grey with a dash of honey and cream. Chamomile is good before bed. I like a good blackberry infused black too though while cold. I don’t drink tea all that often, it’s usually coffee for me.”
