Ic: Willow grinned and then chuckled as he swallowed and spoke. “See. Good lunch, good eating food.”

She took the opportunity to eat some of her own. “So…” she said and chewed then swallowed before continuing “you’ve been here long enough in this computer centre they call a medical suite. What do you think and how much do you love me for dragging you from the dusty halls of star-fleet medical to come join in the awesomeness.”

“Aesthetically, I love it,” Brad said. “Personally, I could have done without being turned into a neurotic mess by a bunch of psychogenic fungi, or half the paperwork.”

He paused to sip from the flask.

“You know, it’s the blessing and the curse of senior staff. We moan and complain about a lack of staff, but then when someone takes pity on us and gives us more staff, we moan and complain about the increase in paperwork.”

Willow laughed. “I had a similar conversation with our executive officer. So many more people. It’s a bit of a culture shock.” She glanced around. “And the Holocrew…it’s taking some getting used to.”

“Ah, that’s the easiest part,” Brad said. “I’m not treating them any different from any other crew member, and resolutely ignoring the way that they can just up and vanish on me if they’re needed more urgently elsewhere.”

He grinned. “After all, not doing that could drive me mad, and far be it from me to give the psychiatry department even more work.”

Willow laughed again. “Don’t you dare they have enough on their plates.” She admonished in a non serious manner.

“So any complaints at all?”

Willow Taylor

“Nothing serious,” Brad said. “My chair just squeaks when I shift. It’s almost got me requisitioning a standing desk, but if I do that, six weeks later I’ll be requisitioning new knees.”

Willow laughed again. “Any complaints that aren’t about you missing your old desk and chair?” She clarified.

Carefully she drank and looked around again. “You could use some art work or a plant don’t you think?”

Willow Taylor

“You know, I have been thinking about that,” Brad said, pointing to a particularly empty corner of the office near the door. “I was thinking about building a hydroponic herb garden back there. Maybe a bonsai, too.”

Cmdr. Dr. Brad Walker
Chief of Staff

“That sounds like a plan. Just not one of those Andarian singing bonsai… The eerie music from those still give me the creeps.” She shuddered slightly at some memory of the plant in question. After another few moment of eating she said with some effort. “I’ve been thinking that maybe it’s time I sent Doug his ring back…”

“I’m honestly amazed you’ve kept it this long,” Brad said. “It’s been what, three years? How many times have you even talked since that big argument?”

She hung her head slightly. “Twice…he still won’t answer my calls. He speaks to Cai but logs off whenever I’m around.” She sighed. “I dunno…i just thought maybe if I held on to it…maybe he’d change his mind? He won’t break things off officially. Neither will I, I. guess for that matter.”

For a moment she was silent, pensive while her hands twisted around her eating utensils. “Do you think that makes me weak?” She asked finally.

Brad cocked his head. “The opposite, surely. How is it weakness to cling on to something so fragile for so long, practically daring it to snap and cast you adrift? Incredibly stubborn, on par with a particularly recalcitrant mountain goat, but not weak.”
