“They say time heals all wounds, but that presumes the source of the grief is finite. Tears shed for another person are not a sign of weakness, but represent how much they meant to you. Sometimes, we put aside a piece of that grief so we can function but things rarely stay where we put them in our mind. Zoi looked around the room and noted the tidying that had been done. She could imagine what this place could look like in the throws of depression. She grinned as Dira started laughing. “Well I am glad you showered dearest. It would have been a little hard to hold you this close if you hadn’t. Like any good partner, I would have of course done it anyway, but I am glad not to have my nostrils burning while I was being gallant and supportive.” She chuckled a bit an squeezed Dira close again.

Dira snuggled in, inhaling deeply through a deep throaty chuckle. “I’m so glad for you,” she said, feeling the sincerity of each word. It was very much true. Zoi had become slowly integrated in her life and it was a testament to their unexpected connection that she had shown up without Dira having asked. Maybe she should have called herself, but sometimes when you were in the middle of the mire, anything outside was too much. Sometimes people had to insert themselves.

Sleep had been elusive and so curled up there with Zoi on the sofa, Dira felt relaxed in the first time since she had told Kane her story. Her shoulders relaxed, arms nestled in between hers and Zoi’s body. Her body, part by part seemed to take turns dropping their guard and before she could even be aware of it, her eyes had slipped closed.

Zoi smiled a bit, though her worry prevented her from really letting it touch her eyes. Her eyes burned a bit with emotion as she felt the sincerity of the words flow through her. Then she felt the give of the body and mind as Dira relaxed completely, drained from her emotions and stress. For a long time, Zoi held her as she was whispering comforting words, not wishing to wake her from what was probably desperately needed rest. When she was sure that Dira was completely out in the sleep that only the truly exhausted or children could be in, she shifted, lifting the woman into her arms and taking her to the bed. Dira weighed more than her, but was smaller. Though Zoi definitely didn’t lift 150lbs every day, she could do so with a bit of effort. She gently laid her in bed and made sure the blanket was securely wrapped around the woman. Then she laid beside her.

She looked at Dira’s light brown face, marked red from trails of tears and the flush of stress. She watched it slowly dissipate to leave her simply calm and sleeping. She took a deep and steadying breath and hoped this evening’s catharsis would help Dira emotionally. Zoi’s hand reached up and though careful not to touch the sleeping woman, she traced the lines of her ridge and facial structure with care as if memorizing every detail. With a bit more effort, she wrapped herself around Dira and held her close. She wasn’t going anywhere.

It took time for Zoi to wind down, but eventually, she too found the release of sleep.

She wasn’t sure how long she had dozed for but when she began to wake, Dira was instantly aware of a presence near. No, not near, next to her. Her lips curled upwards as she recognized Zoi’s specific aura and the fact that her arm was holding her securely. Eyes still closed, she just absorbed this moment, and feeling of security.

But moments had to pass and Dira needed to get up. Or at least she should get up and assess where she was at. She sat up, unsure if Zoi was awake, but likely the security chief was too light a sleeper not to notice the movement.

Zoi was indeed a light sleeper and she woke easily as she felt Dira move. Some people feel disorientation when they wake in an unfamiliar place, but Zoi had many years of experience and her mind easily kept the memory of where she was and why she was here. Waking up was easy and she was instantly aware of the situation and her place in it. She sat up slowly and placed a hand on Dira’s shoulder with concern.

She didn’t say anything. Zoi wasn’t sure what Dira needed at the moment, so she simply remained the calm, supportive presence and waited to see. Patience, inaction, could often lead to better results.

The sleep helped but Dira could feel the fatigue throughout her body and knew it was more an emotional symptom than a physical one. Turning to gaze at Zoi, Dira sighed. “I’m grateful you are here,” she said. “But I think I need to see a counsellor. I have to admit that it’s been a little while since I’ve had to deal with trauma resurfacing, but I suppose it was inevitable in this case.”

Zoi smiled softly and nodded. Her hand drifted from Dira’s shoulder and gently rolled along Dira’s back to rub there. “I think that’s smart, dearest. And how convenient for us that there is an entire department to choose from.” She wasn’t offended that Dira didn’t want to speak to her about the trauma. She was a little sad that she couldn’t help her. Zoi knew she lacked the skillset that Dira likely needed. It still stung a little, that she couldn’t wave a magic wand and fix everything.
