The crowds started to come towards the group slowly. It was unusual for a suspicious people to jump at free gifts. There was always a catch after all, and the XO could feel the suspicion of her and the group. It was not only that, but something else. Distrust mingled with disbelief. Why were these people here giving them things? Was it pity that was motivating Star Fleet? Was it altruism? Was it something all together different?

A small, unjaded boy, approached. Quiet as a church mouse he watched the group before running up to them and asked: “My friend said you have sweets. She was just in getting a check up. Can I have a sweet?” All eyes turned to the boy, watching to see how he would be treated.

Laurali smiled “I have a fruit bar.” She said “It’s sweet but not loaded with sugar.” She said handing over two bars, o e for him and one for a friend.

The kid stared at Laurali suspiciously for a moment then held out a hand. “My friend got a sucker,” he said but still accepted the fruit bar. He tore into the first one and took a bite, probably the closest thing to fresh fruit he had in a while, rations tending to be something more like a sludge filled with everything that keeps a growing boy from starving.

Laurali smiled at the boy “I’m sorry I didn’t grab any suckers.” She said “Besides this is better for you.” She added “I’m Ensign Breeden, what’s your name?” She asked the child.

Oscar saw the kid running to the other Starfleet crew, and was suddenly quite glad that he was not handing out anything. He hadn’t realized that the refugees would be coming along so soon; Oscar had half expected the sudden descent of a large edifice would cow them away for longer. As it was, he was too far away to hear what the kid wanted, and, no matter what, he was even more glad that he wasn’t the one dealing with the boy. Oscar’s own isolated childhood from the age of six meant that he had actually forgotten what being a child was like. More than that, he really didn’t understand what it was like to be a child without a galactic anchor for his whole life.

More than anything, though, Oscar knew that his default state of “disgruntled” would not have been the right approach to take with a child. Sure, the Ogawa was technically there on a mission of mercy, some sort of way to apologize to the Romulans for abandoning them in their time of need. Admittedly, it had struck him when the evacuation was proposed that there was only so much that anyone could reasonably do for a group of people who had recently allowed the development of a planet-killing WMD. What a difference a society-ending catastrophe makes.

OOC: I think we were waiting to see how the kid responds to getting fruit bars instead of candy.

Security officers and non essential personnel who had come down to assist began unloading supplies, setting up essentially a buffet line. “If you would, please start lining up. We will give one of each item to each person. Please grab a bag.” NE Lickenstein said pointing to the bin with bags then to each of the stations set up in turn, “Then visit each of the stations in turn. We have plenty and are here to help so please be orderly, be kind to one another and don’t push.”

A Security NE suddenly grabbed Oscar and motioned toward the line.

“I overheard you,” the NE said. “Sounds like you’re out of stuff to do, so, since you’re down here, help set up the line. You know about supply flow, right?”

Oscar looked at the NE with a scowl, but this NE seemed to be unflappable (or oblivious; the two could be easily mistaken), so the Security NE just waited for Oscar to reply.

Oscar finally sighed and said, “Yes, I can read plans for supply distribution,” before he trudged along to the rest of the Starfleet personnel.

The crowds started to mill about not really organizing themselves in straight lines but not exactly being too pushy either, just going about their business trying to get their allotment before it ran out. It was clear there was no confidence that it wouldn’t run out despite Zoi’s assurances to the contrary.

Laurali continued to watch the group, paying attention to those that came up to her while keeping a wary eye out and staying with the XO to make sure that she was safe.
