Carefully she drank and looked around again. “You could use some art work or a plant don’t you think?”

“You know, I have been thinking about that,” Brad said, pointing to a particularly empty corner of the office near the door. “I was thinking about building a hydroponic herb garden back there. Maybe a bonsai, too.”

“That sounds like a plan. Just not one of those Andarian singing bonsai… The eerie music from those still give me the creeps.” She shuddered slightly at some memory of the plant in question. After another few moment of eating she said with some effort. “I’ve been thinking that maybe it’s time I sent Doug his ring back…”

“I’m honestly amazed you’ve kept it this long,” Brad said. “It’s been what, three years? How many times have you even talked since that big argument?”

She hung her head slightly. “Twice…he still won’t answer my calls. He speaks to Cai but logs off whenever I’m around.” She sighed. “I dunno…i just thought maybe if I held on to it…maybe he’d change his mind? He won’t break things off officially. Neither will I, I. guess for that matter.”

For a moment she was silent, pensive while her hands twisted around her eating utensils. “Do you think that makes me weak?” She asked finally.

Brad cocked his head. “The opposite, surely. How is it weakness to cling on to something so fragile for so long, practically daring it to snap and cast you adrift? Incredibly stubborn, on par with a particularly recalcitrant mountain goat, but not weak.”

Willow gave a small chuckle feeling her eyes well slightly. “You did not just imply your commanding officer was a stubborn goat.” She said a weak smile appearing. She sighed and played with the cooling food “what would you do?”

“Depends on the day and my mood,” Brad said. “The sensible thing would be to just ship the thing back via courier the next time we hit up a Starbase. If you were feeling particularly vindictive or mercurial, you could include a holo-recording of you cosplaying a Hobbit and throwing it in Mount Doom, or you doing karaoke to an early 21st-century breakup song.”

She laughed then. “I’m not sure he would get something like a lord of the rings link. He’s not one for fantasy stories.” She gave a sort of half huff and half sigh.

“The other, more scary question is…do I date again? Or buy a lot of tribbles…”

Willow Taylor
(tribble lady)

“Hard no on the tribbles,” Brad said. “Not even the ones that are supposedly genetically modified to be sterile, because they had to come from somewhere. This ship’s brand new, I don’t think your career could survive the Board of Inquiry if we had to blow it up to get rid of a tribble infestation.”

He took a sip from the flask. “You’re not even forty yet, barely a third of the way through your life, barring any serious accidents. You’ve got plenty of time to play the field yet, and find someone who you can stand and will also stand with you through your career ambitions.”
