The man tested positive for the Romulan equivalent of Tuberculosis. While not as contagious as human Tuberculosis, and normally only affecting children and the elderly, it is no less scary. Lung scaring, pneumonia, and weakness are the primary complaints and without treatment can take years, or decades to clear up if it doesn’t kill you.

Alexis explained what she had found and the complications that went along with it. While she explained she performed a Resonance Tissue scan to see how deep the infection went and how damaged the tissue was. They could repair the damaged tissue but not until the infection was gone. Then she prepared an antibacterial of isoniazid INH with rifampin, pyrazinamide and ethanmbutol-G (to account for the Romulan variation).

“Doctor,” the man said with a small chuckle, “Look around you and were we are at. Chemical fires all of us have gone through. No vaccinations, and crammed in like canned fish. We are exposed to everything bad in the galaxy all the time.”

GM Wombat

Alexis patted his hand. “While all of this is true, it is why we are here. With proper treatment you will be fine and with Vaccinations we can stop it from spreading. I will start with your first round of antibacterials.” She pressed the hypo to his neck. “We also have an expert with us in things like this.” She raised the head of the bed, “You sit back and I will get him, and then I will look at your leg.”

Stepping out of the room Bonner made her first call. =/\=Bonner to Solal. Report to exam room 2=/\= She waved Nurse Lampkin over. “I have a patient with R-TB. I need to know how many other patients have come in with any symptoms associated with it. Considering the environmental conditions and the over all health of the populace everyone who comes in needs to be tested and either get inoculated or treated. Get it set up and I’ll send Dr Solal to you with the specifics.”

=/\=Bonner to Myqian. Commander I need to speak with you at the hospital.=/\= Alexis wasn’t willing to say anything over the comms and panic anyone. Then she commed Dr Walker. =/\=Bonner to Walker. I’m sending you some test results. I’m conferring with Solal. At the moment I don’t have any data on whether this is wide spread or confined to the single gentleman.=/\= She used the hospitals uplink to the Ogawa to send the information on to Walker.

When Solal arrived she simply passed the tricorder with the positive R-TB results. Then she turned to the gentleman. “This is Dr Solal. He’s going to help you with the TB.
Alright, tell me what is going on with your leg?”

Bonner, AMO

Solal read the results. It wasn’t good news. He nodded to the patient. He was well-read on R-TB and he knew how contagious it was, a bit less so than Earth’s own strain, and how deadly. He asked a series of questions: “Who do you live with? Who do you have daily or regular contact with? Where have you been recently?” They were all standard contact tracing questions. Then he took scans and a blood sample.

A few minutes later, the XO made her way into the makeshift clinic, seeking out Bonner. “Status?” she asked simply, feeling the worry and ever present overwhelm even more acutely in this space.

Commander Myqian, XO

Bonner stepped out of the room leaving the patient with Solal for a moment and gestured further down the hall to a small makeshift office space. “We have a patient with Romulan-Tuberculosis. I’ve already started him on the treatment and I’ve pulled in Dr Solal. So far this is the only case I have seen. I also have Nurse Lampkin looking over everyone who has been in to see if they had symptoms of it. It’s not as contagious as the Earth variation, but given the poor environment, food, contaminated water, and types of housing, it could be very bad. We can synthesize enough medicine, we can even vaccinate for it, but we have to get it to the people. It’s also not a one time dose kind of thing. Someone will have to be around to administer the treatments. We also don’t have the space for a mass quarantine, unless we move everyone else outside.” (OOC so I have no idea how accurate that last statement is, but I’m guessing if there is a huge outbreak the mobile hospital, which is smaller than the ship, won’t be big enough. But I couldn’t tell from the specs so ignore if I’m wrong. LOL)

Bonner, AMO

Dira digested this information with outward calm. “And even if we could use the triage deck to create a quarantine treatment space, getting these people to agree would be difficult. They are already intensely cautious, even distrustful. We haven’t built enough of a rapport and we don’t have time. Have you talked to the medical staff present about being able to deliver subsequent doses if we can get the ball rolling?”

Commander Myqian, XO

Alexis shook her head, “No Cmdr. The only members of the community we’ve seen are patients. I had expected to see someone from their medical facilities, but they haven’t shown. They honestly may not be able to be spared from their own patients. I have told Lampkin to inform our staff and make sure that anyone who comes in is tested and either treated or vaccinated.”

Bonner, AMO

“Dr. Solal, just a moment,” Bonner walked up to the young man. “Are you vaccinated for R-TB? If not you need to be.”

Solal stepped out of the patient’s room with the blood sample and headed to the medical lab with two tests in mind: to check the efficacy of the vaccine on this strain of TB and to check that the treatment would work on this strain. He ran both tests.

~ Lt JG Solal, Doctor

He was just walking by, having left the patient’s room with the sample, when he heard his name and paused, turning to Bonner as she walked up to him. Solal had to think about her question for a moment, and then he shook his head. “I am not.”

“Okay, I will talk to the powers that be to see what can be done or what help they are willing to accept. We can probably ask for a follow-up team to set-up more ongoing support.” Dira blew out a breath. “Is there any risk to our crew just by proximity? I’m worried about the Vulcan crew members in particular considering they share a genetic heritage.”

Commander Myqian, XO

“In humans it tends to be show more like the flu, but no lasting or serious damage, unless they are very young, old, or ill. But I am also concerned about any one with Vulcan or Reman heritage.” Alexis looked around, there were still so many to see, she hated to walk away to check the files. “It wouldn’t hurt to go ahead and vaccinate everyone. I could go back to the ship and check the crew records, but I really can’t spare anyone right at the moment. One of the nurses still on board or maybe Dr Walker would already know.” She had contacted Walker but hadn’t heard from him yet. She would of course return to the ship to check if Myqian ordered her to do so. The mobile hosptial was fully staffed, but with the number of people coming in it was more like they were working with a skeleton crew.

Bonner, AMO

=/\=Walker to Bonner. I’ll get our facilities started on producing more treatment courses. Barring any acute emergency cases, tracing the spread of this infection should be the top priority of the ground teams.=/\=
