Some days after the incident in the Arboretum Willow found herself at the end of a duty shift unsure what to do with herself. To day things had been tense between her and Cai over the last few evenings. She paused, she didn’t really feel like going back to her quarters to either argue with him, get given the cold shoulder or worse…eating alone. Her office offered the same option of eating alone. Mind made up she headed instead for the lounge, intending to eat dinner there.

Tucked into a corner table, a plate of lasagna and salad before her and a large glass of synthaholic red wine Willow had to wonder if she was breaking the starfleet captains demeanour rules. She remember a biography of Picard saying that he regretted following the rule of never letting the crew see him entirely as human. She pondered this as she thumbed through the Latest medical updates on cardio thoracic surgery from starfleet medical

Drake was on the tail end of a long shift. He was making his way through the lounge, clutching a black coffee with a shot of espresso. Not to be enjoyed, just for survival. He passed by Willow’s table, and the journal she was reading caught his eye. “Not a bad read. There’s a good paper out there on atrial septal defect. New sort of graft and repair.”

Looking up Willow took in the doctor and the smell of coffee emanating from him. “Doctor Marshall.” She said and smiled. “I’ve seen it actually…thought I keep coming back to this article by Burke Preseton, at medical…he’s claiming he can do a stitch and run procedure in under 30 seconds. Not sure if I buy it given even the Vulcan surgeons with their dexterity take 55 flat and most other humans take 60-90…” she suddenly felt like she hadn’t had a medical conversation with someone for a long time. “Please…” she indicated the chair opposite. “I’m just having some dinner, would you care to join me?”

Drake sat. “No dinner, but if you have any spare caffeine or energy, I will take either. Stitch and run in 30 seconds?” Drake pondered for a moment. “Maybe on a holodeck. When everything is pristine, exactly how you want it, you could rehearse it down to that speed. On a live patient… that’s something I’d like to see. My personal fastest is 65. Though that was a particularly good day. Y’know back in the early days of professional medical practice, there were people who would advertise how fast they could perform a procedure. Amputation in 3 minutes. That kind of thing. Didn’t mean they did it with any particular skill.”

-Drake Marshall

Willow laughed. “I don’t have either I’m afraid. However I can offer a macchiato if you need another coffee hit?” She flicked through the PaDD to the correct journal and offered it to him. “True, however he’s using it to explain this new programme he’s starting. My best time was 72.” She waited for him to read it.

“More coffee is always welcome.” Drake laughed as he accepted the PaDD and started reading. “72’s not bad. Interesting stuff here. I’d like to see it in action before it turns into a whole program but out here that seems unlikely. Any chance you can turn those Captain’s pips into a command performance?”

-Drake Marshall

Signalling the NE manning the lounge Willow pointed to the coffee and held up three fingers. The NE smiled and walked away. Apparently he understood.

“Burke won’t leave the solar system if he can help it. Not likely we could get him here but I could ask.” She said. “How are you finding the new facilities?”

The NE arrived with a large mug of coffee and set it in front of Drake. “Refill or desert Captain?” He asked nodding to her half eaten dinner. She shook her head. “Fine thank you.” Wi5 another smile he left.

Drake sipped the fresh coffee. “The new facilities are very new. Has its upsides and downsides. It’s not overly familiar yet, but everything is state of the art. Had much of a chance to explore beyond the bridge?”

-Drake Marshall

Willow nodded as she listened. “Some yes. I’ve spent a little too much time if I’m honest exploring when I haven’t been on the bridge. It’s the colours used for the carpets and the walls that get me. Seems so much warmer than standard starfleet vessels.” She laughed. “Have you tested out the surgical precisions of the new Medical holograms?”

“They’ve been improved.” Drake said, somewhat reservedly. “If we end up somehow shorthanded, they may prove useful. I don’t know if anything based in computer systems will every be great at improvising when problems arise. There’s always this failsafe or that one. It’s what happens when they run out of failsafes and backups that concerns me.”

Willow considered. “From what I understand GALEN is a learning AI. I’m sure he can learn a lot from you.” She smiled. “I’m sure you’d enjoy teaching some of your surgical skills and preferred methods.”

Drake couldn’t help but laugh. “I’ll try to teach him what I can.” He took a sip of his coffee. “So, was this transfer to the new Ogawa planned even before the old one got wrecked?”

-Drake Marshall

“I had an inclination that we were due to get an upgrade in terms that the old McCoy refit was supposed to be temporary but I had no idea they were building an entirely new class line or that we would be the ones to get the first ship of the line.” She said and looked around. “It’s much bigger than I expected. She chuckled.

“I kind of expected, when we crashed into the walls of the dimension, or however we broke space, that we’d get another shinier McCoy and be sent on our way.” Drake said. “This feels like a real hospital. Like it could meet more than short-term need.”

Willow looked stern a moment. “That was a hairy situation. But yes…it’s a nice feeling being back in a hospital like this.” She smiled.

“D’you mind if I ask, why you decided to pursue command?” Drake inquired. “Just curious.”

Thoughtfully Willow sipped her drink. “I don’t really know…I guess because the opportunity presented itself and that was what was expected of me at the time. It also allowed me more of a say in which assignments I could take which for my family was important.”

Looking at her drink she added “I miss the medicine however.”

“Seems like a common thread. In people who took that next step. It was the next thing, the best thing, the right thing to do. But they do almost always miss their chosen profession. Ever think of stopping by sickbay?”

-Drake Marshall

Willow gave a sheepish grin, her cheeks turning a slight pink colour. “I sometimes do especially if I can’t sleep at night. Don’t tell Brad…Dr Walker. He’s chased me out of places I’m not supposed to be now more than once.”

Drake laughed. “Are you allowed to shoo the ship’s captain? I feel like there’s a regulation about that. Insubordination? Mutiny? Something like that.” He couldn’t quite shake the mental image of the CMO actually chasing Willow out.
