Solal thought back and nodded. “Academy instructors make it a point to tell students, at multiple points throughout the courses, that if one is here looking for glory and excitement, they will be sorely disappointed. Not to mention ‘excitement’ means someone dying, perhaps someone you know. There were no illusions of grandeur.” His accent came out a little harder on the French loan word, mangling the ‘r’. “If one does not enjoy the mundane, in our field the routine physicals, the belly aches, the arthritis, and ‘man flu’s as it seems to be called, then they have no business as a doctor, they will not enjoy the job.” His parents had told him that once, when he was in medical school. “The ‘boring’ makes up ninety percent of our job - if not more.” He put quotes around boring, it was such a human concept. As if they had invented a word for ‘lacking too much in excitement to be worth doing’.

Dira knew so many examples to contrary of people who, even despite the training, had an ideal career in their mind. One in particular made her pause and take a sip. A casual gesture to mask an uncomfortable memory. “I think that is definitely true for some. But not all. And besides, gossip is a very natural occurrence amongst many species. Not all individuals, no, but how information moves through a community can tell you interesting things about it. So long as it’s harmless of course. But therein lies the issue and where it becomes a problem.” She shrugged slightly. “It’ll always be around, we just have to find ways of navigating it.”

“Gossip is normally occurring,” she conceded, In fact Eshin Jolly , and Luke J. Change published a well known study, Gossip drives vicarious learning and facilitates social connection that supports its importance. The study is only based on humans however and can not be said to apply to other species. However I find it detrimental to performance for the medical staff to engage in gossip sessions on duty. They spend more time on that than their duties when it’s allowed. I prefer for them to engage in such…” she almost said ‘nonsense’, “social interactions off duty.”

Myqian sipped on her drink, finishing it off. “Oh, I don’t disagree actually. There are times and places for things especially, if as you say, it’s affecting people’s work. The trick I think is figuring out what is normal social interaction on duty and which is crossing the line. Sometimes it can be a bit finer than we like.” In Dira’s experience, people formed connections with their team through casual conversation and the discovery of shared interests. But gossiping about the captain while she was there was certainly not productive.
