It was 2:00 in the morning, 0200 by starfleet’s reckoning. The only people in sickbay were doctors and nurses. That shift was there to keep an eye on things and make sure everyone survived until the day shift arrived. Drake was laying on a biobed, listening to his own heartbeat on the monitor. It was one of those nights that was quiet… contemplative. The kind of night that allowed a person to assess their place in the universe. All Drake could wish for was an emergency that needed his attention.

-Dr Drake Marshall

It was not uncommon for Surra to be called from her quarters in the middle of the night to handle a crisis. On this particular night, she tended to a small child who had been experiencing night terrors due to a residual traumatic memory of when her family had encountered the infamous Gorn. She’d administered a sedative to the little girl and told her mother that she wanted to see her in the office later on that day. On her way back to her quarters she stopped by the psych suite on deck 7, realized she was running low on hyposprays, and instructed HARLEEN to place an order for more but in the meantime decided to go to the medical suite to borrow a couple.

Dr. Marshal was laying on the biobed, obviously bored because it appeared he was listening to his own heartbeat. She stopped at the entrance, leaned against the frame of the entryway as she folded her arms, then mimicked the onomatopoeia ahem to get his attention then said, “So, doctor, what is your diagnosis? I am not a medical doctor but from the sound of your heart, I am not detecting any arrhythmia or angina pectoris. However, it does seem to be suffering from complete boredom.” she joked with a smirk on her face.

Almikaz, CoP

“I concur doctor. And I do believe it’s terminal.” Drake sat up and turned towards Almikaz with a similar smile. “Something I help you with?”

-Dr Drake Marshall

She laughed and said, “As all boredom can eventually be.” She walked all the way into the room and said, “I seem to be out of hypo needles, I hoped you would not mind lending me some until my next supply shipment comes in? Also, I don’t think we have met. I am Surra Almikaz. Chief of the Psychiatry unit. One big ship, huh? It took us both working the late night shift for our paths to finally cross.”

Almikaz, CoP

“Drake Marshall, head of surgery.” He checked something on his PaDD. “Supply shipments are bit late, huh? Yeah, feel free to borrow some.” He hopped off the biobed. “I’ll show you where we keep them.”

“Nice to meet you Drake.” She said smiling, “Yeah, my AI says ours has been delayed. I appreciate it. We don’t need them as often as you do, but I wouldn’t want to be without any. When my shipment comes I will be sure to give back what I have taken.”

As he walked, Drake remarked “I wouldn’t expect anyone from Psych to need to stay on the late shift.” He didn’t want to probe too much, but if she felt like sharing, he’d be happy to hear about anything that wasn’t day-to-day.

“Your expectation is correct. I am usually in my quarters tucked away in bed, sound asleep. However, on rare occasions, such as tonight, I am pulled from dreamland to handle an issue. Mostly night terrors due to PTSD. However one time I had a patient with a severe form of OCD. His roomate called me because, the man claimed that he could not sleep because he had to count every star that was in view of his window or a terrible fate would fall upon the ship.” Surra raised her eyebrows and smirked at the doctor. “I was forced to sedate him because he had been without sleep for 72 hours and showed no sign of slowing down even though his rational thinking capabilities were obviously declining. Needless to say, despite him not being awake to count the stars, we all managed to survive as the fate he predicted never came to pass.”

Almikaz, CoP

They came to a cabinet and Drake started punching in an access code. “72 hours? Well you definitely saved his roommates life.” He pulled a small gray box with a starfleet medical symbol on it. Offering it to Almikaz, he said “One set of hyponeedles. Any chance you have something interesting going on? At this point I’d take the 50th pareeses squares injury of the week.”

-Dr Drake Marshall

Surra took the case and gave him a nod. “I love pareeses square. I was on the Academy team and got quite a few injuries myself.” She smiled and said, “Hmmm…I don’t know, seems too strenuous for this time of the night. How long are you here? Maybe we can play later on? In the meantime I may have a few more stories.”

Almikaz, CoP

“I’m supposed to be here…” he checked the time. “Another hour or so. But business isn’t exactly booming. I leave it to you.”
