A Few Weeks Ago

Her silver eyes were fixated on the action occurring on the large screen. In a room in the Palais de la Concorde, the Headquarters of the United Federation of Planets, people milled about the space behind her but Salin Mero was oblivious to it all. On the screen people were being interviewed and there were scenes from a planet called Unroth that were heartbreaking. Romulan refugees doing their best to survive and as she watched, Salin felt for them intensely. She understood some of that pain, if not the cause.

The doctors were talking about the work they did, the research, the varied patients. They believed strongly in what they did and seemed creative, resourceful.

They could help her! She just knew it. As the Ambassador to the Federation for the Kelakgh of Gossaneen III, she and her aide were a long ways away from their home in the Gamma Quadrant, but she had been enjoying her time on Earth these past three years. Well, she would enjoy them more if not for how awful she felt these days.

Mero spun in place, her soft mass of white hair and her gauzy gown flaring about her as she faced the man who had been at her side for many years now. “Su’en, we must go! To that ship with those doctors! They will have the answers I just know it,” she said, her eyes earnest and alight with hope.

Su’en Jalero was a seasoned diplomat in his own right, and had served as Mero’s aid for the entire time she had been on Earth. He was also tired, or at least hungover. “Do you know how long that will take, Mi’lady?” the advisor suggested in an incredulous tone as he folded his arms into the sleeves of his tunic eyeballing the map. Truth be told he didn’t know either but what he did know was he liked Earth and was in no hurry to go somewhere else.

“Oh, it won’t be that bad. Their ships move fast and we can meet up,” Salin said, her eyes bright despite the ever present fatigue. “We must go! I just know it will be wonderful,” she added, floating her arms out to the sides.

After a few moments of silence he nodded and sighed. “Yes, of course Ambassador. I will have your ship readied at once. Shall I contact the....” he glanced at the screen and narrowed his eyes, “Og a wa… O gawa… Whatever, shall I send word ahead or do you wish to?”

Wombat

She waved a hand dismissively. “I will speak to the Admiral we met the other day. I’m sure they will be able to arrange things.”

Salin gazed back at screen and touched the symbol of her Rama faith etched into her forehead and gazed upwards. Soon. Soon everything would be alright again, she just knew it.
