Alexis looked over at Solomon, “Daniel’s gone. He left on an assignment for Intel and didn’t come back.” Alexis wasn’t sure how much Solomon knew about Daniel or vice-versa. She hadn’t really explained about Hannah and Daniel either. It hadn’t occurred to Alexis to do so. She and Hannah had joked a little that at some point they would both look into it. Well Hannah had joked and Alexis had agreed because it was the obvious course of action. She thought maybe Hannah had been warning her that Daniel already had. It was right around the whole incident with Soulis, and Alexis knew Hannah had worried.

Bonner

His brow furrowed and he said “Didn’t come back as in no longer interested or able? Or didn’t come back as in didn’t come back?” he asked somewhat gingerly.

Kane

Hannah hadn’t said much, but thinking about what she did say and how she said it. “As in he didn’t come back. She didn’t specifically say he died, but she kept talking about all the things she wished they had done.”

Bonner

Kane took a breath. “Fu<%. I’m so sorry, Lex. I know she’s your best friend. Her hurting must be rough and hard to process. What can I do to help?” he asked as he took her hand in his and gave it a squeeze.

Kane

Alexis squeezed his hand back, “I don’t think there is anything you can do. We can’t change what is.” She hated it for Hannah. She was the sweetest most genuine person Alexis knew. “I don’t know what to say to her. Dad, you remember, we met him once.”

Anthony gave her a quizzical look, “I did?” The last time he had seen Hannah. “Not that DaVinci fellow? Oh she was crazy about him. I thought he was sent on a long term assignment?”

Alexis nodded, “He was. 5 years. Hannah was transferred to another ship and he was there.”

Anthony sighed and shook his head. How heart breaking. “There really isn’t anything you can say, Nugget. Just listen.”

Bonner

Kane shrugged. “Im not the best source for sh-, er, stuff like this. So I’d listen to you dad on this one.” He looked at the floor and shook his head. “That just sucks.” and he took a deep breath and then looked up, pulling the hair back away from his face. “Where is she going, then? Or does she not know yet?”

Kane

“She didn’t say. Just that she took a new position, and might go home first. She would call when she got settled. It should be easy enough to look up where she is. I’m going to call her.” She slipped her feet to thenfloor and moved Frigga off her lap and got up. She pulled out one of her larger PaDDs from her bag on the work station and then disappeared intobthe bedroom.

Anthony looked at Kane. “I could use a drink.”

Bonner

Kane simply nodded once and got up and went to a cabinet. He opened it and took out a clear bottle with a reddish liquid in it. He got two glasses and poured a fingers worth of the liquid in it. Handing one glass towards Anthony as he sat, he said “Go slow. Its strong.” and clinked the glasses together before Anthony took his.

Kane

Anthony took the glass and took a very small sip and savored the burn all the way down. He stared at the bedroom door where Alexis had gone and then sighed. “You know when Alisson finds out, she’ll go straight after Alexis. Not to take her anger out, not at first, but she’ll think she can convince Alexis to give her what she wants. Then when Alexis doesn’t, she’ll get nasty.”

Bonner

Kane shrugged and said “Well… she’ll try. With that request for a VPO, she kinda screwed herself. With it, we couldn’t get within five hundred feet of her. But since she requested it, a court would probably wonder why she is instigating contact with people she is ‘supposedly’ needing protection from. That’ll look bad for her. Oh, and I already locked her out of sickbay and the labs and the arboretum. She can go to her quarters and the Lounge… oh, and the shrink’s office. But that’s it.”

Kane

“Stop doing that,” Anthony chuckled slightly and took a drink. “Labs, Alexis’ work, I get it, I really do. Locking her out of public recreational space proves her point. That we are causing emotional damage and all that. Besides Alisson knows I’ve been working there and that you take Frigga there to walk. So she should avoid it on her own if we’re so bad; she won’t. When she loses it, I want it to be somewhere public with lots of witnesses to back up the security feeds. Somewhere she should be avoiding because I am there. That despite her request for a VPO she came looking for me, on her own, and instigated a problem. Especially in a space with people who know me, that aren’t you and Alexis.”

Bonner

Kane shrugged and said “Be careful what you wish for…” and stood up and went to the computer. A few moments later, he sat back down. “Done. But if she does full blown cuckoo-for-cocoa pops, watch your eyes. And Security is aware there is… ‘tension’… surrounding her.”

Kane

“Yeah I know.” Anthony took a longer sip of the drink. “This is such a mess. I also wonder what her lawyer will make of the fact I offered to pay her way home immediately and she declined and chose to stay on board.”

Alexis came out of the bedroom and sat back down on the couch. “She didn’t answer.”

Kane put his hand on her leg and said “Probably tied up getting things sorted for the transfer.”

Alexis nodded, slipping her hand quietly beneath his. Anthony didn’t miss the movement, but he didn’t dare smile.

Anthony wasn’t surprised. Hannah may not feel like talking very much. Alexis had that look where she was trying to make sense of emotional things. “How’s your patients? I know you can’t tell me specifics. Are they still doing well?” Anthony understood the meanings of all the acronyms and numbers that had been rattled off over the comms. A mother and baby.

“Stable for now. Time will tell.” It was a difficult case, and in the end Alexis knew she may not be able to do enough. It happened sometimes. “What will you, Dad. When you go home?”

Anthony grinned, “Well I have Borcheck to deal with and that seems to be forming up to be a full time job for 10 people. But I have been offered a new position, and I am seriously considering taking it. Head Dean of the Academy satellite campus on Miridian. Which would put me right in the middle of Pioneer fleet.” Alexis was surprised but smiled.

Bonner

Kane nodded and said “Well, you’d certainly be able to see one another more. And its a helluva long way from the bakery; so no unintended run-ins with the delusional pastry queen.”

Kane

Anthony lifted the glass, “There is that.” He took a sip, that was really good stuff. “I might also take a position on a science vessel. I enjoy teaching, but I do miss the field work, and being ship side. Or I could retire and go live on Risa or something. I have options.”

Bonner

“Yeah, you do.” and he looked at Alexis. “What do you think, doll? Think he should retire to a lesiure planet and spend his days basking in the sun?” and he chuckled. “Or do you think he’d go batty in about six minutes? ‘Cause that’s where I’d put my money.” and he looked at Anthony. “You’d get so bored, and I’m guessing you know that.”

Kane

The conversation was suddenly so normal (and weird, was Solomon teasing her dad?? Weird!) she almost laughed. “Maybe if the planet was like Kelmao or something. I understand it’s beautiful, and scientifically an amusement park. Federation has plans to colonize it, but after 140 years they are still studying it. But on a real leisure planet he’d become another James Lovelock.”

Anthony chuckled, “I’d like to think I would last at least 10 minutes, allowing 6 of those minutes for checking in and finding my room.”

Bonner, AMO

Kane looked at him and said “Or maybe you could be a consultant here on the Ogawa. I hear the Science Chief is kind of a d!<k, but he has some really cool toys. And he makes for interesting work discussion.” and he laughed, but there was a tone of sincerity in his voice. “Besides… I’m gonna be short one. At least as far as personnel counts go. With Borcheckgone, we will probably actually get more work done.”

Kane

Anthony chuckled, “I don’t know, he’s kind of a riot. Good taste in music.” He nodded his head, contemplating. It was a tempting offer, one he was seriously considering. “Ah, but who will retrain Borcheck if I stay?”

“You still could. He hasn’t been transferred yet.” Kane said.

“He needs it too. I don’t know how he manages to cause accidents when all he is doing is talking and not working. The amount of work that got done in the lab when I comindeered his assistance was shocking.” Oh hmmm maybe she shouldn’t have said that.

Kane looked at her for a moment and grinned. “Look at you… gettin’ all Machiavellian. Well done.”

Anthony chuckled at the look on her face - like she had just given away her secret. Alexis had told him what she was up to while Kane had stepped out of the room. “Alexis, I love you, but you have no poker face.”

Alexis looked at her father, “I don’t play poker, why would I have a poker face.” And then she nodded her head toward Solomon, “He was supposed to show me, but he hasn’t yet.”

Anthony raised his drink to his lips as he grinned. Alexis had turned pink. There had to be a good story there, but he wasn’t going to ask.

Bonner

Kane laughed softly and said “I told ta all you had to do was ask. But you also know that I cheat. Card tricks aren’t just for making brilliant women interested in me, after all.”

Kane

“Card tricks are cheating.” Alexis looked at him, her mouth twitching trying not to smile. “And you said you would teach me if I agrreed to have dinner with you again. I have dinner with you every day.” One brow raised, but she jnew how this conversation was going to go. She laughed quietly.

Anthony thought if Alexis turned any redder she could power the warp drive herself. He looked back and forth. This was obviously an ongoing conversation between them, “And I think this is a discussion Alexis won’t appreciate my input with.” He downed the rest of his drink. “And one I don’t think Alexis will ever win, at least not in the way she thinks.” He stood, “I think I’m going to go give Borcheck a pop quiz.”
