He looked thoughtful for a moment and then said “That shouldn’t matter at all. Your brain isn’t doing anything different at all. It’s just not recieving all the input you normally do. The band blocks signals, not reception. In theory, you should be able to wear it all the time. It just basically a volume control knob for external noise. Like a reverse hearing aide, but for telepathy.”

“Hypothetically, yes. But physiologically if you have an issue with one of your senses, your brain tries to compensate. It doesn’t just pretend your eyes don’t see. And we’re dealing with a separate sense organ too.” Dira shrugged. “I went to med school but it’s honestly been a long time since I did physiological work like this. I’m happy to keep testing it and seeing if it’s just something my brain is trying to fool me into thinking is off and it just needs more adjustment time, but I wanted to report it anyway.”

Commander Myqian, XO

“Filed it under ‘Crap I Don’t Know How To Fix’.” Kane said and shrugged. “Well, the device itself seems to be wearing well. The contacts are stable, leads solid, and the metal is showing no signs of stress. Maybe a few weeks without matters of life and death and great personal injury will give ya a shot at adjusting to it. All I can say is wear it whenever ya can. Keep a light of issues or anything and we can review.” He paused and took a breath. “And normally Id say go see the Counselor and talk about it… but that would absolutely do more harm than good, so please don’t.” he added with a malicious twinkle in his eye.

Her demeanour shifted and Dira folded her arms across her chest. “Just because you two can’t get along doesn’t mean she’s not the right therapist for someone else. Besides, we do have a full Psyc department.”

“And yes, I do think if you two sat down and could keep your insults to yourselves for a moment we could perhaps reset things. But that would mean you’d have t be willing to hear each other out,” she said.

Commander Myqian, XO

He laughed and said “No thanks. If I had a shred of respect for her, sure. But threatening to sedate and restrain someone ‘cause they’re pissed is no shrink I wanna deal with. That’s just gods-awful patient relations… and that’s coming from me.” and he laughed again.

Kane, CSO / R&D

“And that is something we can deal with,” Dira said seriously. “But regardless, you’re both senior officers and if you ever pull that kind of crap in a briefing with an Admiral on the line again, I’ll launch you from the torpedo tubes.” An empty threat? Oh, definitely. But the fact that she made it at all was telling. “You might have issues with Almikaz, and you might not care one bit about the Admiral, but please do Taylor and I the favour of not having to endure extra scrutiny from Command then we’re already under.”

Commander Myqian, XO

Kane looked at her and shook his head and said “You really think I started that crap? C’mon… I actually do know better. But Dr. Attitude one, kept making faces and shooting dirty looks at me for… what?… existing? Who the f#<k knows; and then two made a medically and ethically questionable suggestion in front of said Admiral. I mean, if you want the Brass to think thats how the ship rolls thats one thing… but I said what I said because it was the right thing to say. And I’ll be damned if I’m gonna be the one to kiss and make up. You want us to get along, be professional? Haul her butt in here and have her apologize. Until then, she can glare at me from afar, I really don’t care.” He looked at her for a long moment and then leaned forward.

“You and Taylor have done right by me from jump. I know that.. and I appreciate it. But in this? I’m not in the wrong. She is. And if this is gonna get resolved like you want? Well… the mountain better come to Mohammed, because Mohammed has had enough of rhe mountains crap.”

Kane, CSO

Dira gazed at him nonchalantly. “You and I both know there were better ways to deal with it during the meeting. Did she bait you? Absolutely. And she and I have talked about it. But you goaded her back, on purpose. So don’t act like you’re some sort of martyr here. There are ways to deal with conflict that don’t throw the rest of your team out the airlock.” She sighed. “This isn’t going to be magically solved overnight, and I’m not expecting you to be chummy or friends or anything like that. But you two do have to exist on the ship together. You’re both senior officers and supposed to be setting an example. And yes, you have serious grievances we need to address. That will happen. All I’m asking of both of you in the meantime is that if you need to interact, that you take a breath before you respond to each other.”

Commander Myqian, XO

Kane looked at her and said “I’ll take a breath. And I’ll call her out if she’s wrong as well. And not to be a d!<k… but I know she’d do the same to me if the need arose. So maybe we are setting an example. Nobody on this ships is under the assumption that she and I are buds. Maybe seeing some of their ‘Senior Officers’ dislike one another… hell, even hate one another… but still get the job done is a good lesson for them. Gods know there are enough officers in this fleet acting like we are all one big happy family. And that’s a straight up lie.” and he laughed once loudly. “At least there is the fact that she and I are honest with one another.” and he laughed again.
