Surra thought back to her first sessions with Kane and how he went over her head to be treated by the Commander. “Maybe I misinterpreted some things. However, I felt underrepresented when he told me I was a bad psychiatrist and then went to you instead. It was like you validated what he saying. I had no problem with you treating him, however he was able to humiliate me by making me look incompetent.” She had been angry at Dira for allowing that. However if she’d stuck to her training she would have realized that they both had two different perspectives on the situation. She wasn’t a mind reader so she couldn’t have known the Commander’s, she had just assumed that she allowed Kane to say she was incompetent and prove his point by going to see her for treatment instead.
She folded her arms again, “Now I think he tries to embarass me every chance he gets by making me look like I am not capable of doing my job. Did you see how he talked to me in that meeting? Like I was stupid. I should be able to ignore his taunts but I can’t because now I feel like I have to defend myself because no one else will back me up.”

Dira listened intently, watching Surra’s body language and listening to how she phrased the situation as she saw it. “We’ll talk about my taking over his assessment in a moment but I want to talk about the meeting first. I can agree that his tone was less than desirable and he can be very blunt, but his argument against an eval first was well reasoned. You clearly had a viewpoint that was worth considering as well. What path we took as a team could have been discussed after Admiral Gutierrez had left the call and we could have figured out the best way to approach interactions with the Ambassador. Unfortunately, from my perspective your point was lost in the mix once you addressed the slight you perceived against you right there and then. It did seem that you were irritated and went on the attack and things escalated from there. I’ve been in some contentious meetings, but that was a first. All I’m asking you to do right now is consider if you would have reacted the same way had it been anyone else in that room who had made the same point that Kane did.”

Commander Myqian, XO

She thought about what Dira said and then said, “No. If it had been anyone else who said what he said my reaction would not have been the same.” It kind of felt good to admit that. “You are right. My perception of him is flawed. It’s to the point now that whenever we have an encounter it’s going to end up with either one of us chiding and making underhanded insults.” She crossed her arms and frowned. “I do not want to spend my time on this ship being in a feud with one of my colleagues. It’s toxic and it’s affecting my own quality of life.” She looked at Dira and said, “So what do you suggest?” The only thing Surra could think was that one of them, her or Kane, had to go.

Almikaz, CoP

Dira considered the situation and Surra’s words, her body language. “I agree that continuing as things are is not useful for anyone and counterproductive to the work we all have to do together. I can think of different things that we can do to maybe improve things but it will only work if you two can set your assumptions about each other and allow there to be a different side to the story. Would you be willing to try that?”

Commander Myqian, XO

She was a more experienced counselor than she was so she was not surprised that she had additional ideas. “Surely I can’t speak for Mr. Kane, however, I am willing to set aside my assumptions. The sooner the better. I am ready to get back to my work.”

Almikaz, CoP

“I need to think it over for a bit first.” Dira didn’t want to rush into anything, after all, and make the situation worse. “I’ll get back to you on it, but in the meantime, There’s no reason for you not to continue your work. With the Ambassador arriving in a few days time, everyone will have their own areas. You still have valuable input, Surra, and you should still meet with the Ambassador, but we’ll let her get on board first and take our cues from her. Sound fair?”

Commander Myqian, XO

Surra stood up. “Thank you, Commander. Everything sounds good and I am more optimistic about the situation. I will prepare to meet the Ambassador and I look forward to reconnecting with you, soon.”

Almikaz, CoP

Dira rose and gave her a soft smile. “We’ll figure this out, one way or another.” She gestured to the door. “Shall we? I have to head to the Bridge myself.”

Commander Myqian, XO

Surra exited the room. After a quick assessment of her own emotions, she felt much better. There was a resolution in sight and maybe just maybe she could enjoy the rest of her time on the Ogawa. “Do we know the Ambassador’s expected arrival time? Will she be coming alone or will her children accompany her?”

Almikaz, CoP

“They should be here in a couple of days,” Dira said as she stepped into the corridor. “As far as we know it’s her aide and her security. Her children are young adults and back on their homeworld, as far as I know, and the Kelakgh have bene on Earth for three years now.”

Commander Myqian, XO

“Very well. I will await orders and an opportunity to assess her needs when she boards the ship. If you don’t mind, I’d like on of my counselors to work with me on this, Dr. Grayson. She is very skilled and thoughtful. I think the Ambassador will take to her personality very well.”
