Ah this was what Navale was really excited about. She stepped off the lift to deck 11 and took a deep breath. Engineering! Most people were immediately drawn to the large glowing heart of a ship - the warp core, but Navale had no interest in it. She had a passion for the little techs. The combadges, the tricorder, the spanners, and laser soldering units. All the small tech that kept the big tech working or repaired. She stopped a passing private to ask for the CE, one Lieutenant Junior Grade Maria. Navale had done her homework and understood that she was new to the Ogawa too. How exciting!

She made her way toward the office that the private pointed out and pressed the chime. She bounced on the balls of her feet and rolled her shoulders and neck before the door opened, trying to get the excitement out before meeting the new boss.

Lt Huzzen, eng

A few moments later after chime went off there was a semi-loud crash that happened behind the door. There were sounds of rapid movement like someone scurried behind the door, were faintly able to be heard before the door opened. What the Lt. could see more than likely definatly wasn’t what she likely was expected.
The door slid way to reveal that the CE’s office was messy. There were articles of personal effects, some equipment, and a few boxes scattered about and throughout the room. In one cornerer there was a haphazard pile of books, that seemed to teeter and the lightest breath in it’s general direction would possibly cause the tower that wobbled to cascade down to the floor. There were a few PADDs that also layed around the floor. Inside the aft of room there was a storage locker set into the wall just below a viewport of the space outside. Sitting mostly in the middleish of the room sat a desk, with an semi professional looking arm chair on one side with two chairs on the other catty cornered in position to each other facing towards the desk. Ontop of the desk sat a few PADDs that were stacked up, the rest seemed to be around on the floor. The walls were bare, if it were not for the mess in the room of things, ir would be as federation standard would indicate.
Maria herself seemed to be trying to straighten up or so one would think anyway. The 5‘4 woman was scurrying around picking up padds and putting them on her desk. Her bone white hair seemed to flow and fall all about her face and head once she settled into a spot. Her olive skin shined under the lights, though at this point its unsuure if the sheen is from a natural glow, or presperation. The patter and sequence of dots that framed her face and neck stood out in stark comparison. She smoothed her hair back out anf just as she stopped a few moments after taking a second to realise what had startled her and caused the padds to scatter about the floor. Maria put the ones in her hands back down on the desk she about faced, snappily turning around the somewhat fraxxled looking Engineer looked to Huzzen. “Hello there. Sorry for the mess. I’m just getting moved into my office. I mean I’m not use to having an office… and this is a first… and there are responsibilities.... and…” She paused and seemed that she could think of no more to add. Then a proverbial light went off in her head. “What can I do for you?”
Maria, CE

Huzzen entered the office right before the door decided to close by default. She glanced around the office. Oh she and the CE were going to get along great. Mess was the sign of a great tinkerer. She came to attention the mess not the least bit phasing her. “Lt Huzzen reporting for duty, Ma’am.”

Lt Huzzan, eng

A look of slight confusion crossed Maria’s face for a moment. “Huzzen… Huzzen…” She muttered semiconciously as she picked up PADD after PADD. She would pick up a PADD look at it once, then set it onto her desk. There were numerous PADDs scattered about the office. When she didn’t find what she was looking for on the PADDs on her desk she started to pick them up off of the floor, doing the same thing she would give it a once over and then put it down on her desk. When she got to the last PADD on the floor she looked at it and smiled. “Ah here it is, Lt. Huzzen.” Taking the PADD she then leaned against her desk, the PADDs were now stacked into multipule stacks, so there was much less risk of them being sent in another artificial gravity ride to the floor. Maria was scrolling and reading the contents of the PADD. Based on how she had acted it could be assumed easily that it was Huzzen’s personnel file, and service record. The number of PADDs that were on the desk, it numbered around the same number of people that staffed the Engineering department. “Why don’t you have a seat while we get to know each other.” She said softly as she continued to read the PADD. “I’m sorry. I would have taken time to read this beforehand… but I just got here myself. And well I got caught up in reading everyones personnel file, the current duty roster, whos assigned to what team… current repair requests.... and the like. Reading them will be no replacement for being out on the floor with everyone and getting to know each person.” She had seen one of her commanding officers do this and she respected that person greatly. In lieu of her own experience she felt she had to emulate the charateristics that she enjoyed from her supperiors when she was a junior officer. She placed the PADD on the desk away from the others and moved over to a replicator in the starboard wall. =^=Cocoa, lukewarm=^= She said to the replicator, and while she waited for her drink to be sequenced then synthised she turned to Huzzen. “Would you like something to drink?” She asked tenderly tilting her head to the side just a little.
Lt.J.G Maria, CE

Navale moved over to a chair that was empty and took a seat. “My understanding is a lot of people are new to the ship if the number of new crew in sickbay is any indication of it.” Navale sat forward a bit, “Oh, a milk snowfall please.”

“Where are you coming from Lt? If you don’t mind me asking?”

Lt Huzzen, eng

Maria spoke the order into the replicator and removed both drinks when the second was synthesized. She placed the both on the desk and sat in the chair adjacent to the one Huzzen was in instead of taking the office chair. Maria picked up her own cup and took a long sip. “If you mean my home plannet I come from Trill. If you mean my previous assignment I cam from a Federation cargo transport ship called the USS Cerbere. I served there as an Ensign for 3 years.” She explained softly taking another sip. “I can see from your record you have an exemplary background. But thats other people’s words in a file, and those people don’t know who you are at least not the real you. So Lt. Huzzen, who are you? Why Starfleet?” She askes softly, her voice filled with compassion. If anything the newly appointed CE seemed to care about her staff down to the individual level.
Lt.J.G. Maria, CE

Navale lifted the cup and inhaled the scent with a disappointed sigh. It was too perfect, but still delicious. “Well as to why Star Fleet, well that’s just a chance encounter when I was about 10. I was born on Coridan, and I grew up in the Shantytown outside the Capitol City. Everything was always breaking and though essentials were always provided, luxuries were scarce and we had to work to keep things going just for the necessities. I learned to tinker when I was really young. My mom worked in the ship yards. She wasn’t an engineer or a technician. They needed people for manual labor and so that’s what she did. Something went wrong with our replicator and she didn’t know how we were going to replace it. It took me a few days but I finally figured it out. She was working extra shifts for the credits and I snuck into the yard to show her, so she could give the shift to someone else who needed it too.” Navale paused to sip her drink, her knee bouncing up and down rapidly. “As I was sneaking out I got stopped by a Star Fleet commodore. The Chief of Engineers of the engineering corp. He saw what I’d done and he sponsered me into a special apprenticeship program. So I could take specialized classes and learn more. Otherwise I would have just ended up doing what my mom did, or maybe if I was lucky, responding to maintenance help in Shantytown, but never would have made a dent in the work.”

Lt Huzzen, eng

Maria nodded as she listened, she took a sip from her cup. After swallowing it down she spoke. “I joined Starfleet to get away from my home. For us Trill to be bonded with a symbiote is everything. There is a huge lottery that people try to get picked for to be bonded every so often. The thing is… I’ve always been different… and no one on Trill could figure it out. I still worked hard in school and busted my butt… but it didnt matter. People knew I was different even if they didnt know what or why. One lottery I was chosen… but after learning it was me the council rejected my application due to my strangeness.... they thought I would not make a suitable host, and I turned to starfleet and never looked back.” She explaines softly looking down itno her cocoa.
Lt.J.G Maria, CE

Huzzan was quiet. “I too was considered different from the others in my…community. Star Fleet took me out of a menial existence and provides me with what I need so I can send the rest back to my mother. And I get to tinker, so I am very happy.” She lifted her chilled cup and drank. “The best engineers I have served with have all been different. I think it shows our ability to see answers that others can’t.”

Lt Huzzen, eng

Maria smiled at Huzzen and nodded. “We are all different that is what makes us individuals. The wonderful thing is that we are able to come together and help aid one another. Just as I am here for you and every member of this department, I would like for you to rely and count on me just as much as I will rely and count on you.” She nodded again with her words. “As they say put a 10 engineers in a room with a problem and you’ll find 13 different answers.” She chuckled softly. “What matters is the here and now, as well as the future.”
Lt.J.G. Maria, CE

Huzzen laughed loudly and then looked a little embarrassed. “Sorry. It’s just very true. It was the best part and the worst part of working with the Corp of engineers. All the ideas but then the fights over which was best.” She dragged her finger across the frosted glass, leaving lines across it. “I have read up on the Nightingale class and all the different systems. Other than maintaining the different systems how do you see our department helping medical?”

Lt Huzzen, eng

Maria gave the woman a wide grin. “Exactly. Then it falls down to testing which methods are effective, and twhich ones are a pile of cockamamie. It’s science in our own twisted way.” As Huzzen asked that Maria’s face scrunched up as she seemed to be thinking about it hard. “Well… there is biomedical engineering right? We have the ability to replace damaged biological parts with machine ones in a pinch… I would think that would take our mechanical knowhow… paired up with their ability to slap it onto someone…” She snickered at the idea a little. “Then whos going to fix the equipment they break… they’d be lost without us. After all we keep every part of this ship in tip top condition. We are the heart and veins of this ship. Without us, it isn’t possible to keep a ship running. I’m sure theres a few engineers here trained on fixing the delicate things. Thats what we do. Recycle, reuse, repurpose, fix it when it is or isnt broken.... I’m sure we have our hands full… and if not then we can easily steal a holodeck for some recreational tinkering get new ideas for new tech out there. The obly detrememnt to a creative mine is when it’s addled or at idle.” She gave a knowing smile.
Lt.J.G. Maria, CE

“I’ve never had a problem being idle. I like to tinker and my hands always have something to do.” Navale smiled and took a drink. The cold sending a familiar welcome shiver down her back. “I love to tinker, Lt. It’s what I’m good at. Diagnosing problems, fixing parts. That kind of thing is really exciting to me. Repairs and repurpose and such. I’m not so good with the big things, like warp theory or transporters. I mean I passed my courses, but it’s not my strong suit. I read that the Ogawa has an R&D department on board. The officer in charge has published a lot papers. I’m really excited to get to work here.”

Lt Huzzen, eng

Maria nodded and drained the rest of her cup of cocoa. “Well thats the benefit of new places, and new people. We get to learn new stuff. Gain new skills and techniques. We are not unlike artists of previous centuries. Insperation suprs on our creations. I find myself excited for this post too even if I’m nervous about being the chief. So long as we can work together I dont think there is any problems we can overcome.”
Lt.J.G. Maria, CE

Navale nodded and took a moment to drink the majority of the rest of her drink. “Where will I be working, Lt?” She wanted to get to work. She enjoyed it and though she did like her days off and socializing she liked her work as well.

Lt Huzzen, eng

Maria nodded and looked thoughtful. She grabbed a PADD that looked different than the rest and tapped on it pulled something up. “Hmmmm” she made the sound softly her face scrunching up in thought. “It looks like its time to do a routine inspection on some of the Tricoders. I would like for you to take stock of what equipment we have here in engineering then take care of inspecting the tricoders in the equipment storage compartment.”
Lt.J.G Maria, CE

Navale perked right up. Most saw such tasks as busy work, but she didn’t. Routine maybe, but she loved working with the small equipment. Without all those small devices the bigger systems couldn’t be repaired and run the way they should. “Would you like me to check with the other departments as well, Lt? Check out their tricorders and get them all done as needed. It will take several days to get them all checked I’m sure, but worth putting in the time. I’m happy to do it.” Plus that would let her get about the ship and really get to know it and meet some of the other crew.
