Dira thought for a moment. “I’ve had several assignments and I used to think my time on the Halcyon was the my favourite, as it was the first time I was made the head of a counselling department, but then I realize it was just the calmest assignment I had had. And that is saying something,” she said with a laugh. After all, she had been in a situation that had earned her a commendation, so it hadn’t been all quiet. “I don’t know, the Ogawa can be a tricky ship, but all my other assignments had taught me something important and I so think they were leading me to be here, one way or another. If not this ships specifically, then something similar.”

“Tricky? How so? I mean, I take it the ship doesn’t do card tricks or anything, right?” Sinclair said with a grin.

Dira laughed and shook her head. “No, nothing like that.” Identifying the quirk on the ship had been something she had struggled with but was slowly becoming more clear. “It’s… a bit cliquey, I guess? Not in a bad way, per say. But most people hang out with those in their department because they are the ones they see most regularly and like hospitals do, people don’t tend to go out of their way to mix with the other departments. This applies to the command folks, which is sort of why I think it’s been hard for even someone as social as I am to get to know people off duty.” She set down her spoon and folded her arms on the table. “I almost think we need to have a big social event. Something fun. But we also have a lot of people who don’t enjoy big social events, so we just rinse and repeat.”

“We need a Morale, Welfare , and Recreation Officer. Like a cruise director, but for Star Fleet ships.” he said and pushed his tray aside. “A specific position whose sole responsibility is to create opportunities for the crew to mix together and bond. A few of the deep space exploratory ships ha e them, but I have been very vocal that it should be a regular position on any ship with extended assignments.”

She nodded slowly. “And that makes sense on other ships. But we’re equipped with a whole psychiatric department and a large team whose job it is to safeguard and aide the mental health of the crew. It does seem like this would be their purview so maybe it’s something to bring up with them.”

Royal shook his head. “I’m not talking someone versed in psychology and social dynamics. I mean a person who knows how to just parties… organize excursions… develop entertainment. The last time I checked, asking a bunch of therapists to throw a party was akin to asking a librarian to host a rock concert.” and he laughed.

She arched her brows. “Speak for yourself, Sinclair. I’ll have you know I threw great parties.” She was teasing, but only partly. That boring therapist trope was a little offensive actually. “And you wouldn’t want someone who understands group dynamics trying to navigate the awkward social dynamics here? I’d be worried someone insensitive to them would inadvertently do more harm than good.”

Sinclair chuckled and said “I’m guessing you have never dealt with a MWR officer before, have you? They are a… special… lot. Part party-planner, part cruise director, part diplomat, part counselor. The ones I have met have level of patience and organizational capability I could only dream of.” and he laughed. “We had two in my Command class. I tell you, I have never met anyone more perpetually upbeat and socially aware than those two. It was almost ridiculous.”
