While walking the corridors of the ship, Zoi seemed cool and distant as always. She looked confident and professional while in uniform even though her mind was cataloging the work she would have to do shortly to handle the breaches that William Franks had caused. For now though, her capable staff would be carrying on the investigation without her. As soon as she had determined William Franks had posed no more threat, she left him in the Brig to come to Sickbay. She desperately needed to see Dira.

She knew Dira was in good hands but that did not alleviate the worry that plagued her mind until she could see it for herself. She let go of her analytical mind, still working through the work she needed to do, as she stepped into Sickbay. All she could focus on now was her partner and how close she had come to death at the hands of a mad man. The blond woman no longer looked confident and poised. She looked worried sick. Her steps faltered for a moment as she saw Dira laying on the med bed and then in a rush, she moved to Dira’s side. “Dearest!” Her voice called, shaky and filled with emotion.

Dira turned her head and smiled softly at Zoi, though her eyes shone with tears. “Zoi,” she said, reaching her good hand out. The left wrist was still in a brace for support while it healed the rest of the way. “You know I was half tempted to release myself to my quarters, but it’s better now that you are here.” So many questions sat in her mind but she didn’t know where to begin or if she truly wanted to know right now.

She took the outstretched hand and held it gently in her own as she perched herself on the side of Diras medbed. She smiled through her relief at seeing Dira relaxed. She brought the hand up to her lips for a gentle kiss and then pressed it gently to her cheek. “I am so glad you are safe!”

The contact and warmth of Zoi’s skin was so soothing, so reassuring. It was a much needed balm after a traumatic day.

“William is in the Brig. I found where he held you and my security officers are currently gathering all the evidence from the site as well as the bombs he made. We are also working on collecting data on how he snuck aboard so that that can never happen again. Obviously, I have a lot of work to do. I am so sorry I did not do a good enough job to keep you safe.”

Tears flooded her eyes and Dira shook her head. “No, it’s not your fault! He’d been planning this awhile, Zoi. It was all carefully orchestrated. There’s no way we could have known what he was up to. He was on leave and supposed to be on his way to a new assignment. He went AWOL. I don’t know how he snuck aboard and that is a concern, but he fooled everyone, not just you,” she said, her voice catching. Franks tricked her into being an accomplice to his plan and Dira resented it terribly. It made her angry!

She kept holding Dira’s hand but gently dropped them to the bed. “True, but it is my job to keep everyone on board safe. No one should be able to just sneak aboard my ship, much less for that long. Oh god, if anything had happened to you…” She left the rest unsaid as her breath hitched and she leaned forward to rest her forehead against Dira’s.

Dira was actively avoiding letting her her mind drift towards the ‘what ifs’. It was too much. But Zoi’s presence, their contact, soothed the unease within Dira, at least a little. “I wasn’t sure if it would work. If you’d feel me,” she whispered. “With the neurosuppressant I’d been on, I couldn’t project. But you did, didn’t you?” Was it their deep bond that had allowed it, or their combination of psi abilities (even though hers had bene nullified at the time)? Or maybe a bit of both? Either way, she was just grateful.

Zoi smiled. “It did. It allowed me to know you were in danger and the general vicinity. At the time, we were so far behind in understanding what was going on. We knew you were gone and that there was an intruder. We had had an explosion in the Shuttle Bay. One of the shuttles had been booby trapped. Dont worry. No one was seriously injured and all other booby traps have been dismantled safely. Our Chief Engineer was having conniptions because he couldn’t figure out who the intruder was. Had I not been so worried, I might have found it amusing. I don’t know why I like when he is irritated or vexed though.” She grinned even wider.

Dira allowed herself a small smile. “He definitely doesn’t like a puzzle he can’t figure out.” It was easier, this casual conversation. It wasn’t that she didn’t want to talk about Franks… okay, maybe she didn’t, but the reality was that there would be time to sort through everything. Meanwhile, she was getting tired of lying here. The only thing that made it better right now was that Zoi was here to ease her distress. Perhaps that was the hardest part of all of this. She was normally so composed and Franks had introduced uncertainty and fear into her mind. He had convinced her, by design or coincidence, that she was losing her mind. It was going to take time to sort through the impact of that all, and it was unlikely she’d do any of that work here in the medical bay.

“The stuff he used to knock me out was affecting my heart, but I’m better now and their scans have shown that. I just want to go back to my quarters,” Dira said, trying to sound less like a pouting child.

Commander Myqian, XO

Zoi grinned again hearing the whine in her love’s voice. Once again she brought Dira’s hand to her own and kissed it. “Mmmmm. The whining call a thousand, thousand patients before you have uttered within these walls. Nobody wants to stay in Sick Bay after they start feeling better. Imagine how the doctors must feel. Lepers I say. Lepers.”

Dira couldn’t help but break into a smirk, even though she knew there had bene good reason to monitor her heart for awhile longer.

After a moment, she turned to look at the Chief of Medicine’s door. “Do you want me to ask if you can come home in my care?”

Haven, CoS

She nodded. “Walker, or Dr. Solal, since he’s been treating me.” The thought of being somewhere else where she could just be was a wonderful thought. “Tell whomever that I can wear a monitor and then they can stop worrying. If there’s an issue, they’ll know right away.” Did she want to wear a monitor? No. But she would make that compromise up front.

Commander Myqian, XO

Zoi nodded and kissed the back of Dira’s hand once more before she went to find Dr. Solal. She was sure he was around her somewhere, nearby in case his patient needed him. If he said no to the compromise, she would understand. In the medical world, the doctors here were the experts, not she nor even Dira. But she hoped the compromise would be enough to take Dira back to the familiarity and warmth of her own quarters.

Just then a thought entered her mind. So far, Dira and she had kept separate quarters. They had professed love for one another and connected deeply in the way only Dira’s people could. Perhaps soon, the idea of moving in together would be a conversation they could have. In the meantime, let Dira be fully healed and recovered from the nightmare that today had been.
