Zoi thought Dira was wrong. There were many things people could hide from their loves ones that would make them be loves less. However, she did not think that she herself had any of those things to hide. It was Dira exploring her to trust that made her smile and squeeze her partners hand. Her voice, when she spoke, was solid but quiet and certain. “That I can do more easily than anything in my life dearest.”

Dira beamed and shuffled a little closer on the sofa, setting the crystal between them. Reaching out, she placed Zoi’s hand on one side of the canar, near the base. “Place your other hand on the other side.”

Zoi watched in curiosity and fascination, wondering what this little device could really do. She did as her beloved asked, placing her free hand on the device opposite the first hand.

She rested her own hands so they were overlapping at the fingertips. “Now just relax. Think of me, of us.”

~Dira

Truly relaxing was hard for Zoi. Years of security training had her always alert. Always in the back of her mind, she waited for anomalies, a change to the low key hum of the ships engines or the vibration that comes from being on a moving ship, a shift in emotion on the ship or a shout where there shouldn’t be one. However, she tried in this moment to let all of that go and to focus completely on herself, Dira and their relationship that had blossomed these past few months.

Her eyes gazed at the beautiful face she had come to love, wanting to grow old together and know every line on her face from smiling or worrying. Her heart filled to the point of near pain as it almost always did when she allowed herself to truly think about them together and what they could be.

Suddenly those beautiful emotions and thoughts of Zoi’s were joined by others. There was adoration for the way Zoi made Dira lose herself in her own feelings and just let go. There was comfort in the simplest touch or brush of Zoi’s mind. There was joy in the laughter and easy banter.

The joining was … well, Zoi had no words to describe it. It was her emotions and thoughts but so much more when Dira added her own. It was hard to tell where one began and the other ended because it was so reciprocal between them. Yet Zoi was not lost within the swirling of their joining. She was still her own person with her own thoughts, feelings, and memories. Somehow the joining simply added a depth to them that had not been present before.

Together, their emotions were all mixed together in what Dira could only calling a loving blanket. Gazing at Zoi, she imagined running the backs of her fingers down the side of her lover’s face, knowing that it was transmit to Zoi herself. See? she thought in this shared space. You’re safe with me here.

~Dira

Zoi couldn’t help but smile. The sensation was unusual but not in a bad way. It felt warm and comforting. I do see. How interesting. Is this something your whole species does?

Haven, CoS

My father is Haliian and they are empaths and touch telepaths. The canar enhances their abilities and it used most commonly to intensify a bond that exists, though there are other uses that are more practical. But they are used very judiciously as it is, as you can see, a very intimate process. My mother is Betazoid, and thus through her I am an outright telepath. I don’t need the canar, but I enjoy the experience even if I have used it infrequently in my life. Even as Dira explained this, she enveloped Zoi in a sense of physical touch that amounted to a hug, but it existed in this middle ground between body and mind and felt real.

~Dira

Their telepathy between each other was so crystal clear, far more than it had ever been before. Her own species had a form of telepathy but it was never this perfect for her before. She enjoyed how close she felt to Dira through this medium. The hug was strange, physical yet not. She wasn’t sure how she felt about it. For her, there was a small disconnect between the feeling of realness and the knowing it was not real in the physical sense. Her brow furrowed. I don’t know about the physical part of this. I am not uncomfortable, but I am also not fully comfortable. How does it feel to you?

Haven, CoS

She had always had a hard time articulating what this experience was for her, but there was something fundamental about not just the use of the canar but the type it connection it allowed that soothed something in her that was restless. For Dira, and perhaps others of her father’s people (she really didn’t know having not grown up around other Haliians than her father), it allowed her to be connected to something greater than herself, because telepathy amongst other species meant always having to hold something of yourself back. Her body felt centred, at ease, but when she finally found the words to share with Zoi, there was a swirl of emotion behind them. Like coming home, she allow but whispered to her lover, her friend, her companion. But if you are not comfortable, we should stop. This is about both of us and it’s important that we are in this together.

~Dira

Zoi smiled a bit sadly, not wanting Dira to feel disappointment at her discomfort. She settled for a minute, trying to understand why she was uncomfortable and to what level it really sat within her. There was a bit of a disconnect between the physical and the mental, but that wasn’t the issue she was struggling with and finally found words. It’s just not something I am used to. I am a very guarded person. This is very open. I feel…a bit exposed? It’s not negative, just… perhaps scary for me to be this vulnerable.

Haven, CoS

I know, Dira replied, mentally brushing Zoi’s with a gentle sensation of warmth and comfort. Know that I am guarding this space between us. Nothing can happen here. And we are still separate beings. We’re just sharing a space that is beyond the everyday. Consider it just a different room that we’re in, and right now it feels strange because you’ve never been here before and don’t know what to expect. That’s okay, my Love. I promise, I’m not upset. You’d know if I was, she told Zoi will all the deep love and affection she felt for the woman. How about we give it another minute and then we can stop if it’s not feeling okay?
