Kane looked at Alexis. =/\= Thanks. See ya. =/\= he aid and then “Did you bring everything we might need? And did you download all the files you want to review on the way?”

“Clothes, no uniforms, yes I brought my PaDD with all my files on it, your sleep mask, my light, and that crazy black bag of yours. I don’t really know what else you might need.” Solomon had had been called away a few times, but she had never gone with him.

Kane, AMO

“Might want to bring an emergency medical kit and a tool kit from the labs.” He thought for a moment and then said “Tell you what, you grab that stuff and meet me at my lab. Knock first. I’ll let you in.” and he stood up and kissed her cheek before walking out the door.

Alexis nodded and stood up, “Come on Frigga.” She walked to the door, “GALEN take Frigga to Cpt Myqian.” Frigga took off following the whistles. Alexis shoved her emergency kit in the bag and took it with her.

A brief stop by Security to procure some things from his own locker that absolutely should be stored in Security and he went to his lab. Walking inside, he said “Hey, Dalton. I’m back. I’ve got somethings to talk to you about. And someone for you to meet.”

Kane, R&D

The air shimmered and Corinne appeared in her usual Grecian style gown, a wary expression on her face. “Meet someone?”

“A doctor. Probably one of the most gifted and brilliant doctors in all of Star Fleet.” Kane said.

Alexis picked up a tool kit and added it to their bag and then made her way to Solomon’s lab. She paused and rapped her knucles against the door.

Kane, AMO

The knock startled her and Cori moved around the other side of the worktable, hands placed on the top, her all too vivid eyes watching the door intently. If she had had a heart rate, it would have jumped upwards at that moment. She chided herself on her reaction, but she knew that her fear of unknown people was well earned and not about to dissipate any minute soon.

~Corinne Dalton

Kane opened the door and closed it behind Alexis. “Doctor Alexis. This Lieutenant Corinne Dalton, formerly of the USS Saracen computer core and now a resident of the Kane Home for Wayward Consciousness. Lieutenant, I think between Dr. Alexis and I, we can help you… if yiu are down for it.”

Kane, R&D

Alexis would have given him a funny look over the name if she wasn’t staring at Dalton with fascination. Her mind registered the reason for the name change. “Hello Lt.” Alexis walked towards her and then paused on the other side of the work bench. “I understand someone damaged your body and won’t give you a new one. That is very bad for your health. Perhaps we can do something about that.”

Kane, AMO

Cori gazed peered at Alexis for several moments before she found words to respond. “A more accurate way to put it is that it was not possible and also very ill-advised at the time. But now…”

“It was possible, and only ill-advised because they let fear dictate what was possible. That is not so here.” Alexis told her.

She shook her head. “No, you misunderstand. I was the one that was unsure if I could take the risk. There were no guarantees, even if we had a suitable means to move my consciousness into an artificial body.” Cori sighed. “I would have rather stayed in the computer than be only a fraction of myself. I was having a hard time truly considering the option.”

She glanced between Kane and Dr. Alexis an then stared at the cube that had contained her unaware for two years. “Kane tells me that the ban on synthetics is over, so I suppose my existing in an artificial body wouldn’t be illegal. But what then? What about those that put me in there”-she gestured to the cube-“and left me. Won’t they come after me? Or will I have to hide away-” She waved her hands in front of her and stepped away. “I’m getting ahead of myself. Besides it wouldn’t be any worse than living in this room for eternity, and annoying you every time you’re working in here, right?” she said, turning back and offering Kane a smirk.

“If Royal were here, he’d encourage me to choose for me, because so many people keep choosing for me.” Dalton approached the table, gripping the edge tightly, her vivid blue eyes becoming almost electric in their intensity as she all but stared them down. “Tell me more about this body.” And just like that the futile feelings from earlier washed away, replaced by an anger-fuelled determination. There would be hell to pay, and if that looked like her simply existing when others said she should not, well, so be it.

~Corinne Dalton

“Dunno yet. But from what I can gather so far, it’s a mostly biological body with bio-sythetic neural interface. Like… a Soong android, but grown, not built. We don’t have the particulars, but we will when Dr. Alexis and I go and get it.” Kane explained. “And that’s the bad news. We’re gonna have to go get it, and it’s a trip. We’ll be gone about two or three weeks. And that means you’ll be by yourself.” He watched her closely to see her reaction.

Kane, R&D

Kane, AMO

Dalton blinked, her eyes widening. “Mostly biological? Wait, what?” She stepped back and forced herself to take breaths, to process all the things he was saying. She looked at Kane. “You know, you really pack a lot into a few sentences. You really need to give a gal time to process one thing before you toss another,” she said with a smirk.

“You have no idea,” Alexis said.

Corinne looked around the room and then at the cube. They didn’t know or understand her deep, deep fear about being stuck in a small dark space. But that was not this room, and the rough computer core she could play in allowed her a measure of stimulation she wouldn’t otherwise have. “What is something happens?” She fought back holographic tears, her hands tightening into fists. “I know you can’t give me any guarantees, but I’m so tired of being forgotten about, of not existing as far as other people are concerned. I don’t want to be stuck in this room forever. I understand you’re still… concerned, but I don’t want to be a prisoner. I’ve done nothing wrong.”

~Corinne Dalton

Kane thought for a minute and then said “Got it.” and he walked out the door.

“I really hate it when he does that,” Cori grumbled before casting a glance at Alexis.

The doctor shrugged, “Get used to it.”

A few moments later, Kane came back in and said “Ok. I set up an automated message to go that guy you mentioned… Royal Whatever. Sinclair. Your friend from the Saracen. If something happened and we don’t come back within a month, he gets a message detailing everything that has happened in this lab with you, where the lab is, and access to get in. And I don’t believe he is very far from here… closer than the body we’re gonna steal, er, ‘procure’-” and he did air quotes with his fingers, “- is. So he can come get you if we end up getting caught.” He looked at Alexis and grinned wickedly. “Like thats gonna happen.” He looked back at Dalton and said “How’s that? That work for you?”

Kane, R&D

Some many details. Had she still been in the Saracen’s computer, she would been able to process things at a much faster rate, but she was just herself, unenhanced and, after a diagnostic, dealing with a lot of discrepancies. She guessed she would have time to work on those while they were gone though, would she?

Dalton nodded. “Okay. I appreciate that. And also, just so you know, whatever you did with that pseudo core is helping. There is a lot less pain. So thank you.” She didn’t want them to think she was ungrateful for the help they were seemingly offering her, but she was still trying to process everything and it was… a lot!

“Pain?” She could feel pain? Then she waved it away. “We’ll discuss that later. Keep working with the core, that will help the most.”

“So… you’re stealing a mostly biological body” Cori tipped her head upwards. “Huh, and here I thought my days of living in a holonovel were over.” She looked back at them and smirked. “At least we won’t be bored. But please, don’t get yourselves into trouble, not on my behalf. Be… careful.”

~Corinne Dalton

Alexis laughed, “Don’t worry we will be fine.” She looked at Kane, “We should get going.”

Kane, AMO

Kane nodded. He looked at Dalton and said “There is a sub menu in the core. You can build structures, settings… there are even some rudimentary characters from holodeck programs you can interact with. Sorry I gotta leave you in here. But we’ll be back. No parties, young lady.” He looked back at Alexis and said “Let’s go.” and walked out the door.

Kane, R&D

Alexis shouldered the bag and walked out without a look back. In the ear bud she was muttering over the encounter, her brain absolutely riveted on the puzzle as they made their way to the shuttle bay.

Kane, AMO

The shuttle was ready as they hopped on with several other transferring crew; so discussion wasn’t an adoption. But a day later they found themselves alone in a cabin on a private passenger liner heading to Delta IV.

Kane, laid out on the bed in a pair of shirts, stared at the ceiling, his arms folded under his head. “Ok… let’s talk. What do you think?” he asked.

Alexis, in leggins and a thigh length shirt, sat cross-legged on the end of the bed facing him. “It’s a puzzle. I only know of 3 other times consciousness has been deliberately transfered into a synthetic body. Dr. Graves, Soong’s wife Juliana Tainer, and Admiral Picard. She had reservations and legal restrictions, but they could have helped her. Why would someone forcibly extract her without permission? Then keep her hidden away for 2 years. They sent it to you because they knew you would get her out. So who, why, and what does the who want?”

Kane said “I thought of all that, too. But something tells me that her extraction wasn’t malicious.” He rolled on his side and looked at her. “Think about it. She was a full human consciousness merged with one of the most powerful starahips in existance. That in and of itself is a weapon of almost unlimited potential. And people knew she was in there. And they used her to their benefit. So pulling her out only made both her and the ship less effective. From a Tactical or Intel standpoint, it makes zero sense. And there is ample evidence that those in any kind of position to do anything wanted her in there; otherwise they would done whatever they could to get her out.: He shooknhis head and laid back. “Naw… the powers that be wanted her there and someone pulled her out. And they did it without permission. And then they got her to me, because they knew I’d try and help her.” He paused and thought for a moment.

“Two years she’s been gone from the Saracen. Two years and nothing. And then poof… she’s dropped in my lap. No chain of custody. No authorization code. But whoever did it knew me. Knew my Intel credentials. And nobody else was told about it.” He raised his head.

“I think someone was trying to save her.”

Alexis nodded, “I think so too. But who was it? You said Cmdr Sinclair was close to her and defensive when you asked about her. If it was him why hide it? Do you know anyone who was associated with her during that time?”

Kane shook his head. “Defensive isn’t quite the right word. At least, not like ‘guarded’. Protective is more like it. I think he’s got feelings for her. Besides, as sharp as he is, I don’t see him having the technical know-how to pull a conciousness out if an artificial matrix. Plus I dug a little. When she vanished, he had all her belongings stored in a non-Fleet storage facility. High security. And he checks regularly to make sure it’s all still there. I know, I know… stalker.” and he chuckled.

Hannah was there, but if she knew what happened to Cori then she would have just asked. Daniel had been there, and he did a check on Solomon, but never delved deep from what Hannah told her. “I want to ask Hannah about it. She’s a prosthetic specialist, but it won’t do any good until we have the body.”

Kane shrugged. “Maybe call her and just ask her what it would take to do the transfer. I’m assuming the lab with the body has all the equipment we’ll need, but if not we’ll have to get out hands on whatever else they don’t have.”

She nodded, “Get me a secure line and I’ll send her an inquiry. If Dalton was in the computer while Hannah was there, I am certain she was already working on a way to do it. Hannah wouldn’t leave someone like that.” While she talked she grabbed one of the several PaDDs she brought along and composed a short but concise message to Hannah. “Here,” she handed him the PaDD.

Kane’s fingers danced over the device for a few moments and then he tossed it aside.

“So this lab is on Delta IV? What else do we know? Without our own shuttle how are we going to get the body out?”

Kane nodded a bit and said “So the labnis behind a front, a high-end restaurant. Very exclusive clientele. Fortunately my Uncle Louis is a member of that particular club, and you know Uncle Louie… he was so damn happy we got married he just wanted us to have a special moment on him during our honeymoon.” and he grinned mischievously. “Intel repirt says there is a hidden transporter pad in the walk in cooler in the kitchen. The lab is beam in - beam out only. Fortunately for us, we o ly have to use their system to beam in.” He sat up ND put his hands in his lap, looking at her.

Alexis’ eyes dances slightly. “Your Uncle Louie is generous.” She had a feeling Uncle Louie was going to become a recurring scape goat.

“So we have a few options. We’re going in under ourreal names. Once inside and about halfway through the meal, I can excuse myself to the facilities. A minute later, there can be a ‘medical emergency’ of such a severity that it distracts everybody and you, being a doctor, step in and deal with it. I just need about three minutes to get in, download their data, tag and transport the body, and set charges. Then you and I leave with the ambulance and the patient. Once out of sight, we just beam up to our waiting ship, beam up the body, and blow the charges. That should put enough time between us that the bad guys don’t have a whole Lotta reason to tie us to it. Whaddya think?”

It was certainly within her skill set, and didn’t require her to play games that she couldn’t play. She gave him a look though, “Why do you get to do all the fun stuff?” She was absolutely joking. She could find and tag the body, download the files, and even set charges, but do so without being caught? Or what to do if she was or something went wrong? Probably not. That wasn’t the type of ‘on the job training’ that Alexis wanted. “Are we going the first day or doing the whole honey mooners thing first?”

Kane feigned pain. “What? And deny my wife the chance at a real and actual honeymoon?” He sat up further and moved towards her. “Lounging by the pool…” he said quietly, his eyes fixed on her. “Drinks under a sun shade on the beach… dancing at night in a nightclub packed with people… breakfast in bed in a hotel with no computer service, just you and I to entertain each other for days on end…”

Alexis had it bad because she went right into his arms, transfixed by the way he was looking at her. Until he mentioned going out at night. She opened her mouth to tell him she was not going out at night, but he could.
Kane couldn’t maintain it anymore and he started laughing, rolling onto his side. “Oh, I know… that’s the stuff of nightmares for you, doll.” and he laughed some more before looking back at her. “We have one night at the hotel, dinner the next night. As soon as the ship sends the signal it’s in place and ready, I go to the little boy’s room and one of the staff has an ‘event’. We leave and spend the next coupke of weeks learning how to do a conciousness graft from one hostvto another.” He cocked his head to the side and grinned. “Sound better?”

Alexis laid on her side beside him and grinned. “Yes. You’re pretty good at distracting me. I would try the rest if you wanted to.” It would take those two weeks to figure out how to do it, work out any pitfalls or dangers, but he hadn’t had much chance for leisure in his life. If he wanted some, she wouldn’t complain. She could figure out how to enjoy it too.

“We’ll have the ship to ourselves on the way back. I’m sure we can figure out some ways to keep us from getting bored.” he said as he rea he’d back and flipped the blanket over them…

Eight days later…

The passenger liner held orbit around Delta IV while shuttles transported passengers to the various resorts around the planet. For the Kanes, it was the very posh Talhin Resort and Spa, set on on of the more picturesque islands on the planet. Known for its commitment to comfort, the resort hosted guests from all over the Federation and beyond.

As their shuttle landed, Kane stepped out and was greeted by the Bolian Concierge. “Dr. Kane and Dr. Kane. Welcome to Talhin. Your bags will be seen to. Please follow me and I will give you a tour before taking you to your room.”

Alexis wasn’t sure they should give up the bag with all the equipment, but she just went along with whatever Solomon did. Then they followed the concierge through the resort. “Through here is the resort’s casino. Just give your name to the doorman and he will take care of you.” They walked further to a wall of glass. “Outside you have a reserved cabana on the beach for the duration of your stay. You have a private server that will provide you anything you need. There is also an exercise pool on the east patio. We have a couples message reserved for you this evening…”

“Are they trained and current on certifications. So.eone untrained can cause massive muscular and joint damage,” Alexis quired and instructed annoyingly.

Kane gave the Concierge a look that said Well? Answer her. and the man cleared his throat. “Yes, Dr. Kane. All are certified and highly skilled. We take no chances with out guests health. Now if you will follow me…” and he led them through the resort and to lift. He took them up thirty-five floors and then led them down the hall and to the last room. Opening the door, he ushered them inside.

“Ok. I’m Novak, your contact. Authorize?” he said and Kane pulled out a micro PaDD and scanned the man’s retinas. A chirp and Kane said “Ok. Reservation set?” The man nodded. He looked at Alexis. “On your signal, our agent will experience a seizure from a cerebral hemorrhage. He will collapse and thrash about. That should get all eyes on you.”

Alexis nodded. That would be easy. People tended to be drawn to stare at the morbid but do nothing about it. For some reason, Alexis barking orders and doing what she trained to do drew lots of attention also.

Novak looked back at Kane and said “You have the parameters?” Kane nodded. “Get in, copy all files, destroy the lab and all contents.” Novak nodded once. “Ok. Reservation is at seven. Black tie. We’ll be waiting for your signal.” He nodded again and turned and left.

Alexis waited for the door to close. “Well this honeymoon is disappointing. I have to go shopping. I don’t own anything that qualifies as black tie, and I didn’t bring my dress uniform.”

Kane turned and put his hands on her hips. “Really? You think that I of all people would make you, Doctor Alexis Claire Kane, go shopping on your honeymoon? I might as well make you go to the nightclub.” He squeezed her hips and then walked past her and to a closet, opening it to reveal a black, low cut dress and matching shoes. It wasn’t exactly ‘revealing’… but it wasn’t exactly ‘a lot’ either. “Not your normal style, but if they aren’t watching you work, they’re gonna be watching you work.” and he looked back at her and grinned. Oh, he knew he was going to pay… but it was worth it.
