“I think I’m so used to people shying away from ‘the shrink’ that the separation that comes with being in command doesn’t feel all that different. It saddens me sometimes, but I am trying to make that better. Or rather, I was. Recent events have not made that particularly easy.”

Captain Myqian, CO

Royal nodded. “It’ll take time. Not just for them to come around, but for you to find your style as well. And that’s fine. It should come organically. It will be more genuine than if you tried to force it.”

Sinclair, XO

“What about you? How are you feeling as XO now that’s you’ve been on the ship a little while? How do you feel about Corinne deciding to stay on board?”

Captain Myqian, CO

Royal smiled. “Pretty solid about one, pleasantly curious about the other… still slighltly nervous I’ll mess up both.” and he laughed. “But one thing g is true for both… they are never boring, that’s for certain.”

Sinclair, XO

“Certainly not on this ship. I don’t think I’ve had a month here I could rightly call boring. And if the Admiral didn’t warn you about that before you arrived, I’d say you got tossed in the fire,” she said with a grin.

Dira held out her glass for a refill.

Captain Myqian, CO

Royal obliged and then said “I was warned, but until we were docking.” he said with a laugh. “Too little, too late I think is the saying.”

Sinclair, XO

She laughed and then took a sip. “At least youhad a ship when you arrived. Mine was a mess and I reported into Captain Taylor at Starbase. Wasn’t expecting such a nice ship for my first command stint but hey, I’ll take it and I’m grateful.”

Dira settled more deeply into her seat and gazed upwards for a moment. “It came up in conversation with Commander Walker a little while ago, and I’ve somewhat avoided doing anything about it, but my mother is starting to bug me about it and I’ve tried to give vague answers.” She blew out a breath. “I might need time away from the Ogawa and it would posibly mean taking our Chief of Security with me.”

Captain Myqian, CO

Royal shrugged. “I’ll keep a light on in the window for you.” was all he said. He downed his drink and exhaled slowly. “And don’t worry about it. I told you… I’m here to have your back. If that means a vacation, so be it. Besides…” and he grinned at her, “… it’s not like I don’t know how to be a Security Chief when the need arises.”

Sinclair, XO

Dira blinked and then laughed. “You know, I had momentarily forgotten,” she said with another chuckle.

“Vacation might be a part of it, but my mother is getting re-married and she really wanted me to be there. They’ve been together for years and aren’t in any rush, but… she told me about this a little while after we got the new ship,” she said, quirking a brow. That had been a few years now. “Things just kept coming up and I couldn’t get away.” Never mind that she hadn’t actually had any proper R&R since she had gotten here. And then there would be the rest of recent events that she’d have to contend with and there would be no where to hide amongst a bunch of telepaths.

Captain Myqian, CO

He smiled slightly and shrugged. “Do what you have to, Skipper. I’ll make sure the children play nice while you are gone.”

Sinclair, XO

Dira nodded and sipped more from her emptying glass. She sat forward, leaning towards him with a strangely shy smile. “I’m nervous. About going to the wedding. For a lot of reasons but also because it’s the first time I’ve brought anyone home to meet my family since Paige. Over a decade, Royal. I know they will be kind about it, at least my parents will be, but it’ll be everyone else. And it’s hard to hide that sort of speculation from me when my mother’s side are all telepaths.”

Captain Myqian, CO

Royal set his glass down and leaned forward, his eyes staring hard into her. “Dira, I want to listen to me, okay? Hear what it is I’m sayinging.” He took a breath and then said “It doesn’t matter what they say or think. Not in the grand scheme of things. You and Haven… you are what you are. No one else’s opinion on the two of ya matter. Yeah, words and thoughts can hurt. But you can’t let that change you two. So do me a favor. Remember what I’m about to say when the judgements and the lack of respect for your boundaries start to feel like they are too much. “He looked at her I gently for a long moment and then said “F×<k ‘em. You live your life on your terms. Not theirs. And if they wanna be gossipy little s#!ts, then let ‘em.” He leaned back, but kept his eyes on Dira. “At the end of the day, the only two beings who get to have any kinda opinion that matters on you and how you live your life and who you love are you and Haven. The rest can go soak their heads.”

Royal

Dira couldn’t help but grin and nod. “Thank you for that. I will hold that in my mind. In some ways that gossip would be easier than noticing that I’m… not quite well. It’s the trick with telepaths. Even if when we are not reading your thoughts, we are very aware of emotion still. I can keep mental shields up, but I don’t want to block everyone out. I do want to feel a part of the event. I’m just super grateful she’s marrying a Denobulan,” she said with a laugh. At least half the people there wouldn’t be telepaths.

Captain Myqian, CO

He shrugged and then said “Butbyou are better than you were yesterday. Amd ‘well’ is just you compared to a standard. I think you are well for you. But it doesn’t matter if that well is or isn’t good enough for anyone but you. And as long as you can let yourself just be… well will come along soon enough.”

Sinclair, XO

Discomfort wended its way through her body and Dira wished she could just ignore it. Ignore the reality. Sadly, she could not and there were going to be consequences. “My parents don’t know about Franks…” she all but whispered. “About recently.”

Captain Myqian, CO

“And you not obligated to tell them.” Royal said immediately. “Not until you are comfortable discussing it. And if anyone tries to make you discuss it outside of a mental health environment, distance yourself from them and allow yourself the right to not be mandated to be uncomfortable.”

Sinclair, XO

Dira shook her head. He didn’t understand, but he wasn’t a telepath. It was okay because she knew the advice on the surface was solid, but it was one of those things in practice that was a lot more complicated.

“With anyone other than my parents, yes, don’t owe them any explanation. But.. these are my parents. They know me Royal. They might not push but I know that my keeping this from them for as long as I have is going to hurt them. Because we have always been close and we don’t keep secrets. They knew I was having issues on the Calypso with my XO, and my mother even intuited that there had more been than I could share with her.” She sighed. “I can’t avoid them. I love them too much for that. I just don’t know how to tell them about any of it.”

Captain Myqian, CO

Bump

Royal thought for a moment and then said “Well… sometimes you just have set them down and start at the beginning. I don’t have a whole lot of experience with ‘family dynamics’; especially positive ones. But if you have always been close, then rely on that closeness. They are your parents… they care for you and want you happy. And even if bad things happen, they are there for you. It can’t all be sunshine and rainbows, after all. Let them have some of the bad as well. My grandad always said that you have to have bad with the good to really appreciate the good. And he was right.”

Sinclair, XO

Dira inhaled deeply and then sighed, relenting with a nod. I suppose it’s okay now. I couldn’t talk about anything on the Calypso because it was all mixed up in practitioner confidentiality, but he’s not my patient and it’s been long enough now. It’s hard to set that aside. It feels a bit like setting aside my principles, even though I deserve to be able to tell my own story.”

Captain Myqian, CO

Royal shook his head. “‘Doctor-patient confidentiality is no longer enforceable when the doctor or patient commits heinous or criminal acts, or threatens the commission of such acts.’” Sinclair said with a grin. Of course he would be able to recite the legal nomenclature of a doctor’s interactions with their patient. “I had to learn that little tidbit during my stint on the Challenger as Security Chief.” and he smiled and shook his head at the memory. “Nothing like investigating your own crew to make friends.”

Sinclair, XO

Dira tensed and she couldn’t even explain what her unease was. Maybe it had been the numerous times since Franks kissed her on the Calypso that she had evaded her parents’ questions, especially after Dira had grown increasingly distressed about his behaviour after the away mission incident and his accusations against her. Or maybe it was just that right there: her having to defend herself against him time and and again. “I can imagine. I sometimes wondered what my crew thought after Franks accused me of insubordination and mutiny. It wasn’t a secret to anyone but him that people didn’t think super highly of him or his skills, but here was a strange scenario and at the time I was almost grateful to be confined to quarters just so I didn’t have to be privy to the errant thoughts and people questioning my intentions and character.”
