Life had settled into something of a rhythm between therapy, physio, studying, and building something of a social life. But for Corinne Dalton, the reality of her existence was still… weird. She wanted to just leap into life with this new body, but something was still off, something she couldn’t quite place her finger on. She thought back to the quarantine bay when she had awoken in this body and Cori could recall all the conversations perfectly.

Which is why she found herself at the R&D office’s door looking to talk with Solomon Kane. He had suggested it in his own way and for some reason she thought he might be able to help her or maybe just understand? Who knew. She still wasn’t wearing her uniform, and had opted for black leggings and a grey knit tunic with tall black boots. She pressed the chime and waited for the grumpy retort.

There was no grumpy retort, but the door slid open. As it did, BLARING music poured out of the room. A smooth, high pitched male voice sang out:

Watch me clinging to the beat
I had to fight to make it mine
That religion you could sink it neat
Just move your feet an’ you’ll feel fine

Who would be the fool to maybe
Trick a kiss in time
Who am I to say that’s crazy
Love will make you blind

In the church of the poison mind

Inside the mess and chaos of the Secure R&D Lab was a writhing mass of softly glowing blue cables connected to a biobed. The legs and lower torso of the R&D Chief stuck out from under the bed and he yelled over the music “Dalton! You see that data port by the main sensor display? Lick your finger and stick it in there!”

The upbeat music made her jolt for a second before she broke into a grin. Cori wandered in, trying to assess the situation she was seeing. “You want me to stick my finger in a socket? Seriously? You do remember I’m organic now, yeah?”

“Shut up. Lick your finger. Stick it in the hole.” he said from under the table. “And no kink shaming. I like what I like.”

Kane, R&D

She stared at him for a moment. “You are truly an odd man,” Dalton said, though her tone held more admiration than anything. Licking her finger, she stuck it in the hole with a measure of distrust mixed with deep curiosity. He didn’t strike her as someone who did things for no reason.

Nothing happened. No sound, no spark, no surging electrical pulse frying her to a crisp. From under the table came a short exclamation of satisfaction. “HA! Told you motherf%<kers you wired it wrong.” Kane said more to himself- or perhaps someone that wasn’t there- than to Dalton. He slid out from under the table and stood up, brushing the wild hair back and glaring at her. “So what do you want?” he asked as he turned and went to workbench and began to tap notes into a PaDD. “And you can take your finger out. I got what I needed.”

Kane, R&D

“K,” she said, removing her finger, glad he wasn’t wrong, otherwise she was pretty sure his wife would be pissed off that Cori had been electrocuted. It probably wasn’t the best thing to happen so early in her adjustment phase.

What did she want? Some days she wasn’t even sure. When you had a plethora of options at your fingertips all of a sudden, it was hard to evaluate anything. “I don’t know. I mean, you suggested we could talk? I’m just…” She gestured around to encompass everything. “Overwhelmed, I guess. I’m still trying to wrap my mind around being here on this ship when I wast remember being forever stuck inside the computer of another. And there are all these unanswered questions that really hard to not have answers for. It’s… a lot. And something about how you suggested I could come see you says that you somehow understand this in some way.”

~Corinne Dalton

Kane didn’t look up, but said “Uh-huh.” He tapped some more into the PaDD and then said “What unanswered questions? And yeah, I get it. Your whole reality has been turned on its head and you feel blah blah blah blah…” He set the PaDD down and looked at her, crossing his arms on his chest. “So? What questions do you need answered?”

Kane, R&D

“Who pulled me from the Saracen’s computer? Why? Those are the big ones. But then there’s how I ended up being delivered to you specificially. You can’t tell me you’re not the least bit curious about that part.,” Cori said.
