Sinclair looked down the bar at the Chief of Staff and said “I think necromancy is a bit of a strong word for it, Doctor.” and he chuckled. “After all… all of this-” and he gestured at the ship as a whole, “- is about saving lives. is it not? I think Doctor Kanes are doing a fine job of doing just that. As is the rest of your staff.” and he took a drink.

Sinclair, XO

Sam eyed the trio of officers and smirked. “Never a dull day around here,” he remarked as another crew member approached and he went to take their order.

Sam Nazarian, Host of Florence’s

Alex smirked as she approached the bar. Necromancy, or something like it? Never a dull day around here, indeed! Huh.

Navale nodded with a comical grin. When Sam returned she asked, “So what made your day never dull today, Sam?”

Lt. Huzzen, Engineer

“Well, I always do enjoy talking with all of you, so regardless of how it might have been before, it’s no longer dull,” he said with wink. Lots of odd things happened in Florence’s, and even more around the ship, which tended to get talked about here. Yes, he heard all kinds of things, in varying layers of truthfulness.

~Sam, Host of Florence’s

Navale chuckled, “Well we have to keep it entertaining. You might get bored and leave, then where would be?”

Sam nodded gravely. “That would be a shame, I agree,” he said, a tiny gleam appearing in his eyes.

Navale nodded sagely, “Then we must do everything we can to make sure you want to stay.”

It took a second before Alex realized who the woman Sam the bartender was talking to must be, but then she smiled. Unwind – or whatever passed for that on a ship where necromancy among medical staff was apparently ‘just another Tuesday at work’ – and meet her new subordinate at the same time? Way to kill two birds with one stone. Her old boss, Commander Jean ‘plus est en vous’ Devereaux, starfleet officer first, human being second, would have considered it unorthodox at best. But that was the good thing about being Chief now: at last, she got to do these things ‘her way’.

Alex turned to Sam. “Meeting me could, perhaps, also qualify as making your day just a little less dull?” she joked, tongue firmly in cheek. “I’m Alex Winters, freshly minted Chief Engineer. Do you make Virgin Mojito’s?”

“Can do easily, Chief,” Sam said with an easy grin. “And it’s always nice to meet the new crew. Welcome aboard!” he said with sincerity before moving off to make the drink.

Turning to Huzzen, she said: “And unless I miss my guess, you and I will be working together for the foreseeable future. I looked for you in Main Engineering earlier, but the boarding formalities took most of the business day. I must have missed the end of your watch. Lt. Huzzen, I presume?”

~ Alex Winters, CE

Huzzen held out her hand, “That would be me, Chief. Pleasure to meet you. Sorry about that, I didn’t know you were arriving today. Been crawling around the port warp nacelle all day replacing some corroded optic cabling. Filed my report and then went off duty to stretch my legs.”

Lt. Huzzen, Engineer

Alex shrugged, as she took the offered hand and shook it. “I’m Alex Winters, Chief Engineer, but you already knew that. And don’t worry about it. Being assigned as Chief here came as a bit of a surprise to me, especially since I’m outranked by multiple people in the department, including you; I wasn’t expecting a welcoming committee. Had I been here to do it, taking care of essential repairs and maintenance that may have been waiting for a lull in the action, now that we are between missions, would have been precisely what I’d have told you to do. It’s all good.”

~ Alex Winters, CE

Sam returned and slid the virgin mojito with a smile. Even without alcohol, Sam knew how to mix a drink, and with that confidence he moved back to the Chief of Staff and XO. “Refills for either of you?”

~Sam, Host of Florence’s

“Sure,” Brad said, throwing back the last of his drink and sliding the glass back across the bar. “And can I get something to eat?”

Cmdr. Dr. Brad Walker
Chief of Staff

“Sure,” Sam said. They had no kitchen, but she didn’t mind grabbing things for people, especially if they were already settled in with others. “What do you feel like?” he said, taking the glass to swap out with a fresh drink.

~Sam, Host of Florence’s

“Oh, just a sandwich will be fine,” Brad said. “Ham and Swiss, a little Dijon mustard.”

“Rank mostly talks about how long we’ve served, not how much experience we have,” Navale said. Most people she knew as engineers had done a lot of work before academy or after hours. And some faced bigger and more engineering puzzles than others. “Hopert was showing me the nacels. Small machines and tools are my specialty.”

Lt. Huzzen, Engineer

Alex nodded. “Good to know. Give me your take on what we should be focusing on in the next few days, while we’re still between missions? After that, no more shop talk, I promise. But since I missed my chance to catch you in Engineering earlier, I must make up for lost time here.” She smiled, picked up the Mojito, took a sip, and put it back down.

~ Alex Winters, CE

“Well,” Navale paused to sip her drink while giving the request serious thought, “considering the optic cabling in the port nacelle was corroded, I would suggest checking the starboard nacelle as well. It wouldn’t hurt to double check the redundancy of the back up power for primary and secondary sickbay. And I would schedule a time to go in and run diagnostics on all the equipment as well.”

Lt. Huzzen, Engineer

Cmdr. Dr. Brad Walker
Chief of Staff

Alex nodded. “Sounds like a pretty good rundown. I’m going to need a day or two to wrap my head around all of the ship’s systems and their status. Until then, I’ll trust you to keep tabs on the most urgent priorities. Do you have people lined up already to help you knock down the items on your hit list? If not, I’ll come up with the manpower you need and post a schedule first thing in the morning. But no need to invent the wheel twice, if you’re on top of it already.”

~ Alex Winters, CE

Navale chuckled. “Oh I’m not even a shift lead, Chief. You will probably want to speak to Chief Morthen. If I see anything, I’ll be sure to add o
It to the logs though. A few of those are already on my task list so I will make sure they get done. Morthen will have a bigger picture of everything going for you.”

Lt. Huzzen, Engineer

Sam had disappeared and returned a couple minutes with the sandwich for Walker. “Here you go, Chief,” he said, reaching behind him for a glass of water and taking a long drink.

~Sam, Host of Florence’s

“Alright Sam, you can pick out a drink but what about food? What would recommend to go with this drink?” Navale asked.

Lt. Huzzen, Engineer

Sam leaned his hip against the bar and studied Navale critically. “Hmmmm. Do you like spicy things at all?”

~Sam, Host of Florence’s

Navale drummed her fingers on the bar top. “Hmmm… well if you’re talking about flavor, I love it. If you’re talking about heat, I love that too.” She grinned, “I also love trying new things.”

Lt. Huzzen, Engineer

A gleam appeared in his pale grey eyes and he stood upright. “Alright then, challenge accepted. Be right back.”

“I’m sure your up for it, Sam.” Navale said as he walked away.

When he did appear again, he had a plate of coconut battered prawns and a small dish of a bright orange sauce. “Coconut shrimp with a habanero and pineapple sauce. Fruity like the drink, and the heat is strong but balanced by everything else.”

~Sam, Host of Florence’s

“It sounds delicious. Thanks, Sam.” Navale speared a prawn and dipped it into the sauce and took a bite. “Mmm…” It had a good flavor and an interesting texture combination. She finished the bite and then a moment later the heat hit. She blinked and blew out a breath. She grinned, “That is excellent.”
