Dira smirked. “You think there are other officers stuck in ships computers that are going to get organic bodies? Don’t worry, this is not going to become standard procedure. To be honest, the odds of this working and as well as it did were strikingly small. Besides”-she waved her hands-“this never happened, remember?” And not on the Ogawa.

“I’m more worried about idiots going and getting stuck in ship’s computers on purpose,” Brad said. “But I’ll gladly put it out of my mind.”

She nodded. No, this would never be public knowledge, and even if Dalton talked about her own experiences, it would still remain fairly contained. She knew Cori wasn’t interested in a bunch of attention. “From my conversations with the officer in question, she’s pretty adamant about just being allowed to live her own life. I doubt it’ll be common knowledge.”

Brad nodded, assuaged.

Dira smiled. “Any other worries I can ease?”

Captain Myqian, CO

“I presume Drs. Kane will continue to manage her case?”

Cmdr. Dr. Brad Walker
Chief of Staff

She nodded. “Yes. Any physicals or monitoring will go through them, but in an emergency Dalton gets treated. Period. If they aren’t available to consult then do your best. As I understand it, aside from the brain, everything else will be as expected.”

Captain Myqian, CO

“Of course,” Brad said, trying not to look offended at the thought that any of the Owie’s medical staff would refuse to treat a crewmember in distress.

Of course, it wasn’t something they could really know until it happened, but if it did, that doctor wouldn’t be on board for much longer.

Dira studied him for a moment before she decided whether she should explain further or not. Some understood the nature of her abilities better than others, but she and Brad had’t really talked about any of that. “It’s not about protocols, Brad,” she said. “Anyone who learns more details than they should could be placed in an awkward position. I don’t want to force any member of the crew into a difficult position, but we can’t predict how the powers will be will react to any of this should it come to light. Like I said, I will deal with it, but it doesn’t mean that treating Dalton is risk-free. We all swore a oath and I trust everyone to uphold it. But it does feel unfair when we can’t warn people of the risks. I just want you to understand that that is the situation at play here.”

Captain Myqian, CO

Brad took a moment to digest that, and really, it made a lot of sense to limit the number of people who knew the Lieutenant’s true nature. At the same time, though, it could make getting her emergent treatment difficult.

“So, should I put a note in her file that Dr. Kane or I handle any treatment she requires?” he eventually asked.

Cmdr. Dr. Brad Walker
Chief of Staff

She nodded. “Yes. Doctor Kane will be her primary care provider, and you as well as needed or as you wish to be involved. Beyond that, outside of emergencies, no one else should really be treating her.” Myqian sat back in her chair. “I mean, we start going down a complicated path is we have to evaluate every medical service and who can provide what. A cut or a sprain? Sure, not a problem. But the moment we have to pause to analyze whether an injury or illness is okay for someone outside fo the core team to handle, the moment we start second guessing the treatment we provide. I’m concerned someone will be indecisive precisely when Dalton needs immediate care. Which I realize is a lot of complicated thinking and feel free to tell me I’m overthinking it all.”
