After being let go by the teacher, Adrian Sorel made his way to where the Psych offices were situated on the ship. He hadn’t visited them since he had boarded, months ago. As he entered the hallway he noted which offices had their lights on or off and decided to just pick the first available one. It turned out to belong to Dr. Anastasia Darren. He didn’t remember her name from before but he had the sense that the medical officers seemed to change over quite a bit.

He approached the door and pressed the chime to see if the Doctor was available.

Adrian Sorel

Ana looked up from where she was reading the latest psychological research on a stack of PaDDs. The door chime had startled her, as she didn’t have any appointments and had thought she would spend much of the afternoon pondering her next research study… the one that would hopefully get her back into a lab and off of this Starfleet vessel.

“Come in,” she called, both curious to see who was there and saddened to lose her quiet alone time.

Adrian Sorel slouched into the office, his black bangs almost covering his eyes. His mother would be bothering him to get a hair cut soon. While not quite as sullen looking as a human teenager would be at his age, he definitely had a sullen cast to his mouth. ” Uh…hi. I am Adrian Sorel, my mother works in the Science Department here.” He said as his gaze swept her office, trying to get a sense of the Counselor.

Adrian Sorel

The door slid open and Ana was shocked to see a civilian standing there… a younger one at that. Somehow it hadn’t connected that she would be providing her services to non-Starfleet crew. She tried to cover up her shock with a forced smile.

“I’m Lieutenant Darren, one of the ship psychiatrists. How can I help you?”

Lt Darren, Psychiatrist

Adrian Sorel looked a bit uncomfortable still, as his gaze moved back to Dr. Darren, studying her now. “Umm, I uh had a problem on a school trip down on the holodeck. I thought maybe I really needed to deal with it. ” He said wondering if he had made a mistake.

Adrian Sorel

“Oh? What happened?” came the neutral reply as she gestured to the chair in front of her desk and then leaned forward to study the young man.

Lt Darren, Psychiatrist

The young half Vulcan/half Human teenager sat down. Adrian Sorel was 15 years old though he looked longer then a human teenager at that age. This was due to the difference in life span and maturity of the Vulcan people. He had the typical Vulcan features though his skin tone was paler then the Vulcan norm. His hair had obviously outgrown the normal rigid Vulcan short style and outgrown and ragged. He was dressed in a civilian tunic and pant set that was beige in color.

He sat down in the indicated chair but one foot swept back and forth on the carpeting and he banged his heel periodically up and down on the deck. It was quite apparent that he also did not possess the typical Vulcan poise and reserve.

“Well, umm our teacher Em’ujo took us there for an outing. It was a program about open heart surgery, a very graphic depiction of one. I ....couldn’t handle it because I went through when I was 8 to replace my heart with a synthetic one. I already had two surgeries and my mother made me watch a program with a surgery before my heart replacement so I would understand what was going to happen. After my surgery…” He paused and bit his lip in uncertainty.”..after I had nightmares seeing my own surgery and it failing. I died. ” His voice faded off to a whisper at the end.

Adrian Sorel

Ana tilted her head to the side as she listened to Sorel, trying not to allow herself to be too distracted by his inability to remain still. Reaching for a PaDD, she quickly tried to see if she could access his medical records to corroborate what he was telling her and to see if there was any record of his heart stopping in an uncontrolled manner while the surgery was going on.

Adrian Sorel’s medical records did indeed show his trouble with his heart. He had been born with congenital heart defect that caused him to have two surgeries, one at a year of age, the second at 6 before the final heart replacement at 8 with a synthetic heart. The replacement of his heart had been preceded by heart failure and the medical teams needing to revive him twice before the successful replacement.

“That sounds like a very difficult thing to watch. I think it’s natural that it would upset you,” Ana said, trying to sound soothing but ending up sounding more awkward than that.

Lt Darren, Psychiatrist

“I was fine watching the heart surgery that my mother showed me, it was only after that I had the nightmares.” The tempo of his foot increased as he peered up at her through his bangs.” Em’ujo seemed to think I wasn’t very strong because I couldn’t face it.”

Adrian Sorel

“Oh goodness,” Ana responded before she could stop herself and then blushed lightly as she covered her lips with her fingertips. “I suppose I could send a note to your teacher to be a little more understanding of the personal situations’ of students.” She seemed slightly uncomfortable with the position that Sorel was putting her in. “Do you think it would be helpful to schedule regular appointments with a therapist here to discuss your situation?”

“Oh, no!” Adrian Sorel said shaking his head. “I do not think that would be advisable. I do not wish to make my interactions with her to become difficult.” He looked down again for a minute as he scuffed his show on the carpet.”Well, my mother would say that it is logical to address the situation instead of hiding from it. So I would think that seeing a counselor to deal with it would the logical solution, wouldn’t it?” He frowned in concern. Why was the counselor asking him? Shouldn’t she know better then he what was required? This wasn’t transpiring as he thought it would.

OOC: Do his medical records back up the experience?

Lt Darren, Psychiatrist

OOC: Reposting from above>>Adrian Sorel’s medical records did indeed show his trouble with his heart. He had been born with congenital heart defect that caused him to have two surgeries, one at a year of age, the second at 6 before the final heart replacement at 8 with a synthetic heart. The replacement of his heart had been preceded by heart failure and the medical teams needing to revive him twice before the successful replacement.

Ana stared at Sorel, unblinking, for a few moments as she pondered what he had to say. Finally, she responded, “okay…” with her voice trailing off, sounding slightly lost. She glanced again at the medical records displayed on a PaDD in front of her, displaying information consistent with what the teen had told her. “How do you feel about your early childhood medical history?” she finally asked.

Lt Darren, Psychiatrist

The teenager shrugged, a typical response for one his age. “I got really tired of all the medical appointments and I don’t enjoy having to be in sickbay. I am really glad that is all over now though. My mother pressured me for a while to think about going into Medical studies given my extensive knowledge in the area but I won’t. I am looking at the sciences possibly though.”
