Lena strode calmly down the halls of the USS Ogawa. She had worked hard to prove to Starfleet that she, like her brother, was worth a shot. She was due to report to Lt Drake Marshall, Chief of Surgery. When she arrived in secondary sickbay, she found it host to most of the Ogawa’s surgical suites. And its’ surgical staff. She located Marshall’s office. “Dr Marshall?” She said through an open door. “Nurse Lena Khev reporting for duty.”

-Ensign Lena Khev, Surgical Nurse

“What do you see, Nurse Khev?” Drake pointed to a scan he was staring at.

-Dr Drake Marshall, Chief of Surgery

Lena stepped forward. “That’s a child’s brain. Extensive trauma, lesions along the frontal lobe… Doctor Marshall, why are you asking me?”

-Ensign Lena Khev, Surgical Nurse

“Because my nurses aren’t mindless drones who hand me tools. I need competence. As surgical staff, you report to me. This is the Head Nurse’s daughter, Otana O’Keefe. I’m planning an experimental treatment for her. Her parents haven’t even signed the waivers yet, but if they want that girl to make it to ten, they will. I need to know you’re good enough to keep up.”

-Dr Drake Marshall, Chief of Surgery

“I’m more than prepared” Lena said “to treat a half Bajoran, half Human with a traumatic brain injury.”

-Ensign Lena Khev, Surgical Nurse

Drake smiled. “Good. How did you know?” He was impressed. It may have taken destroying a planet, but finally he had a competent assistant.

-Dr Drake Marshall, Chief of Surgery

Her brain appears human. Except the temporal lobe, which has distinctly Bajoran features. And it’s on the side of the scan. O’Keefe, Otana, Female, Human/Bajoran. Age: …” She paused. “She’s to young for neurosurgery.”

-Nurse Lena Khev

“Actually, the best case scenario for her not having the surgery is drooling into a cup by 13. The damage is limiting neurological function. As she gets older, it will get worse. The lesions might grow with her.”

-Dr Drake Marshall, Chief of Surgery

“Are you always like this? On a hunt to cure everyone and be a hero?”

-Nurse Lena Khev
