Bracing her elbows on the desk, she laced her fingers together and rested her chin on her hands while she processed the rather unique position they were all in. Well, she had enough experiences with troubled individuals to at least understand how to approach the situation but it was always a different beast in reality. “I’m sympathetic with your situation. I’m sure I’ll be meeting Doctor Jarvis soon enough myself. How do you want tp proceed at this point? He’s settling, but I want to make sure that after all the crew has been through that nothing is made worse. How can I help you on that end?”

“Help me and Will- er, Captain Taylor, talk Command out of as many out-transfers as possible,” Brad said. “I realize I can’t expect to retain everybody we currently have, but losing Commander O’Keefe or Lt. Marshall would be a huge blow to the staff.”
Dira nodded, sympathetic to the plight of their Chief of Staff. “I’ll do what I can.”
He leaned back in the chair. “You know, you’re already handling this job a lot better than I did.”

Chief of StaffShe gave him a small smile. “Well, don’t be too hard on yourself there, Commander. Being tossed into the role while doing another job isn’t exactly the most ideal circumstances. You did the best you could.” She shrugged a little. “It helps, perhaps a little, that I’ve been a psychiatrist for twenty years, and I’m a telepath. I can read the room, as it were. Right now, I can sense where people are at and have experience troubleshooting situations. It also means that, as a medical practitioner myself, I understand your role and your departments overall needs. Right now you’re giving me the specifics to make the team work at its best. And that really is the job of an XO. Or so I believe.”
“I was talking about my stint as an XO myself, a decade ago. I… didn’t exactly do a very good job of it,” Brad said.
“Ahhh,” Dira said with a nod and a slight shrug. “We all learn what our strengths and weaknesses. You learn. Who’s to say you couldn’t try again at another point if that’s what you wanted?”
He gave her a small grin. “I think the whole thing taught me that it’s definitely not what I want. But the qualification is nice to have, and means that in an emergency, I can handle things for a little while.”
“Speaking of team, would it be beneficial for me to meet all of them as a group?” Myqian said.
“I don’t think it could hurt,” Brad replied. “Ideally it could wait until we’re back on the ship, but I understand that may not be an option for some time.”

The XO nodded. “And, as it happens, I can give you a bit more information, but it need to stay between us until the captain and I have more details to share with the crew. But… it looks like Command is going to give us a new ship. Bigger too. Much bigger. A proper hospital ship,” she said, her eyes lighting up.Commander Myqian, XO
Brad’s eyes widened by a fraction, and he was silent for a long moment. “Well, hot damn,” he said, letting out the rest of his breath in a low whistle. “I suppose that makes me bugging you for more staff a little irrelevant, huh?”
