Achilleas spent the time between parting with Ria and her arrival doing a bit of cleaning up. Not that anything was a mess or strewn about, but the PaDDs on his coffee table was stacked and sorted, he had changed into some casual clothes, and set up a couple of glasses and a cold pitcher of water.

“Come on in.” He called out. When the door opened, she would see that the lights weren’t bright but not at a romantic level of dimness either. The decor was pretty standard fare for an officer’s quarters. He hadn’t really been with the fleet long enough to have a lot of stuff to display. There was however an antique telescope sitting in one of the corners of the room.

As the doors swished open in front of her, Riani took a deep breath to steady herself and then stepped inside his quarters. Yet she only moved far enough inside so that the doors would close behind her. Her eyes almost immediately zoned in on the telescope and the hint of a smile started to tug at the corners of her lips. But not knowing what to say or do, she just stood there in silence and hoped that Achilleas would do or say something instead; lead the way so to speak.

Achilleas walked quickly over to Ria, he wrapped his arms around her as he pulled her into a hug. “I’ve wanted to do this all shift. Seeing you but not being able to talk to you naturally was so frustrating.” He went quiet as he just stood there holding her. After another moment he pulled himself away and looked at her sheepishly, “Sorry if that was too sudden or too long. I’m still trying to figure out what I should or shouldn’t do. Is hugging okay? I know it’s kind of late to ask that now. Anyway I’m babbling, please come in and sit.” He then moved over to the couch and poured them both a glass of water before he sat down.

Since she had still been clutching the PaDD to her chest, her one arm got pinned to her body as Achilleas hugged her, making the hug feel slightly awkward. “Me too,” Ria whispered softly. As he let go and she then followed him to the couch, she said, “You don’t have to apologise. And yes, I think hugging is okay.” As she sat down on the couch, she instinctively sat in one corner of it; her back pressed against the arms and back rest. Not because she didn’t want to be close to him, but because she was afraid she wanted it a little too much. She felt bad about it and was worried about hurting his feelings. And yet they could look at it whatever way they wanted: for them to be together was against the regulation. So keeping their distance to some degree was the only way forward for now; at least in her mind.

Achilleas moved a little closer to Ria on the couch while he moved the glass of water to the corner of the table. There was still a good distance between them but they could reach out and touch the other if they wanted. “Thank you for coming. I wasn’t sure where would be more private for us to talk. I guess we could’ve gone back to the holodeck, but I didn’t think of that at the time.”

“Of course and it’s okay,” Ria replied a little bashfully. She wanted to say that she didn’t mind meeting in his quarters, and part of her didn’t, yet the larger part of her felt a bit uncomfortable and that this was a bit too private. At least right now. But she also didn’t want to hurt his feelings or worry him.

He reached for his glass and took a drink. He held the glass in his hands as he turned sideways to better talk to and see Ria, while he folded a leg under himself. “I was incredibly distracted during work today. It’s a good thing that we’re still at starbase and things are slow. I think we need to find a solution though.”

Ria nodded and couldn’t help but sigh softly. “So was I,” she replied with chagrin. “I’ll have to go through all of my work from today again and make sure there are no more errors in my calculations. I’m so incredibly sorry about that.” For a brief moment she looked up and looked Achilleas in the eyes. “Maybe if we work in different shifts for a while,” she suggested. It wasn’t what she wanted, but it was the only thing she could think of. There was so much more she wanted to say, but didn’t know how to. Talking about and expressing her emotions didn’t always come easy to her and she almost always felt like she needed to guard her heart. Thus she stuck to the more rational aspects of this whole situation.

Achilleas nodded slowly and with a thoughtful expression. “I think that is likely our best option. I hate that it is though. It would be better for us if we didn’t have to hide it at all, but we’ll need to see the Captain first for that.” He scooted a little closer and held out a hand to her, “Are you sure you want to? I very much do, but I don’t want to pressure you in any way.”

Taking his hand without hesitation, Riani nodded. “I’m afraid of talking to the Captain,” she admitted in a barely audible voice, “But I don’t want to hide either. I really like you.” Her cheeks turned pink as she said those last words and dropped her eyes bashfully. Why was it always so difficult for her to talk about these things? How did other people do it.

Achilleas shifted a little closer as he brought Ria’s hand up and lightly kissed her hand. “I’ll be right there with you every step of the way. I can’t guarantee it will go well, but I’m willing to take the risk for you. I really like you too and couldn’t imagine you not being in my life. We will get through this, together.”

A tender smile played across her face as Riani lifter her gaze and looked Achilleas straight in the eyes. Finally letting go of the PaDD she had still been holding, she reached slowly and shyly out with her hand and then cupped his cheek with it ever so lightly. “Thank you,” she whispered softly. While she wanted to take things slowly, she also was a pretty tactile person and found it easier to communicate her feelings for someone through touch than through words.
