“That just shows you that he’s more stupid than petty,” Bob said. “The smart thing to do is to is say ‘oh, congratulations on your new assignment, we’ll miss you here, blah blah blah’ even if everyone knows you don’t mean it. That way, five or ten years from now you’ll just remember your whole experience with him as ‘oh yeah, we had a bad mission but he wasn’t all terrible.’ Now you’ll remember him as the guy who nearly killed us through incompetence and has a small penis.”

Dira actually laughed aloud, though she clamped down on that as she drew looks from the few other people in the mess hall.

“Seriously, if your going to be a command officer, you need to be good at something. If you can’t be good at piloting space craft you should at least be good at piloting space office politics to cover for that.”

She grinned. “Remind me to come hide in your office when I’m having a bad day,” Myqian said, both with humour but also sincerity. Bob had a way with the truth that made things lighter at times and she appreciated it immensely.

He nodded in acknowledgement, smiling softly.

Returning to a more serious demeanour, she set her spoon down and leaned in slightly. “As you can imagine, I’m pretty good at keeping things quiet if I want to. I don’t know that I need to go into details, but let’s just say that he wasn’t there to solidify my impression of him. You see, it’s taken him long enough to actually understand that I have zeroed in on him as a person and his motives,” she said, tapping her head with two finger. “And there was a point where he realized that he could use my telepathy to his advantage. It’s a tool like anything else. And any tool can be used as a weapon if applied in the right way. But the more hilarious part of all of this is that he thought he could somehow intimidate me of all people on that ship. I have twenty years experience of evaluating people and their behaviour. He can’t surprise me. I’ve got his number. I know exactly the kind of person he his and the kinds of things that will take him down in his life if he chooses to continue this ridiculous path. I won’t be complacent when it comes to him, but I also don’t intend to let his childishness impact our lives on the Ogawa.”

Dira almost looked surprised by how much she actually disclosed. Normally she was the short and sweet kind of talker. The person who tried to sum up things concisely and in digestible chunks. She mused to herself that she probably did need to get that off her chest before they got to the Ogawa. they couldn’t start fresh otherwise.

Bob blinked. “I have to admit that’s a lot more predatory sounding than I had him pegged. I mean, it doesn’t surprise me, really, because we know he’s stupid and ambitious. But I thought his stupidity was less pre-meditated and more of just your run-of-the-mill bumbling ineptitude. Though… I guess he is actually pretty narcissistic…”

Bob often though that narcissism was very predictive once he found it, though he was not an expert on the matter at all. Dira would actually know more about that than he would, given her specialty.

Dira shifted in her seat as the wash of discomfort moved over her. What could she say really? There was much that her oath of confidentiality forbade her to say but if she tucked away the truly confidential details, there were things she could still share. Gazing off to the side, she pondered this dilemma as a slight frown shifted into her face. She sighed. “I can’t say a lot, but I can say that he had moments where he required my help. But, as can happen when a therapist works with someone very closely, transference can happen.” Her gaze flicked to Mason and her discomfort was evident. “My attempts to create boundaries did not go over very well and ever since our interactions have been… difficult.” An understatement if there ever was one, but perhaps Bob would understand that the mission gone awry had just been the final straw.

Commander Myqian, XO

“Oh.”

It was said quietly, but conveyed understanding of what was not actually said. His frustrations with the man had faded away, and something darker and more angry started taking their place.

“Was that before or after our mission, if you can say?”
