Jules had always felt a little out of place, a little out of phase with everyone else. For a long time she covered this up by being a relatively high achiever. As she started her third year of the Academy it became increasingly more difficult to stand out among her peers. She was by no means neurotic but she was starting to have to adjust and the the cosmos in a new, a more mature, way.

Swallowing her anxiety she rang the chime to the Counselor’s office.

The Ogawa was still not ready to have her crew boarding and as such, the ship’s counsellor had been appointed an empty guest quarters to do the new crew’s intake evaluations. Sitting on a couch across from a single chair separated by a small table, Ever sipped on a cool glass of water absently starring at a PaDD. Today she had already completed three of her first six appointments. Just as she had laid the tablet on the couch next to her, the chime sounded. Right on time. “Must be a new graduate,” Ever mused to herself. Most junior officers were still enthusiastic and eager. And never late. She appreciated that more than anything. Punctuality was defiantly a pet peeve of the counsellor’s.

“Enter!” Ever called out cheerfully to her visitor on the other side of the door. Since the replicator was broken in this particular guest quarters. she poured a second glass as she waited for her guest to enter. It was water or nothing. But at least it was Andorian water.

Lt. Commander Ever, Zeanar (CoP)

Jules stepped forward two paces. “Good Afternoon, Counselor…er Doctor…ah-um Commander,” Jules said with a barely perceivable pause… and wince, “Ensign Chen reporting for psychological assessment.”

Ens. “Jules” Chen (Engineering)

“Commander is fine. I usually only go by Dr. Zeanar if I am performing surgery. Come in and have a seat Ms. Chen,” Ever said gesturing to the seat across from her.

“Thank you very much, Commander.” Jules moved over to the chair and sat.

Ever laid the PaDD down she had been reading and reached for a glass of water. “I am afraid the replicator is broken, so I can only offer you water if you are thirsty. How has your day been so far? Have you had a chance to meet any of the crew yet?”

“What’s wrong with the replicator?”

Lt Commander Ever Zeanar, CoP

Ever loved the energy and enthusiasm of newly commissioned Ensign’s straight from the Academy and joining their first posting. Had she been so eager and optimistic? So many years had passed and experienced lived through it was lost somewhere in time and memory. The counsellor chuckled inwardly as Chen had skipped over the questions posed and went straight to the fact the replicator wasn’t working. An engineer at heart through and through no doubt.

“I have no idea. It doesn’t speak so I have no change of figuring out it’s problems. Guessing not mommy issues,” Ever laughed lightly. Her ‘office’ was nothing more than an abandoned guests quarters that had not been used in sometime. She was just grateful the head functioned correctly. “I ask it for water and it gives me a dark sludge that smells like a Ferengi’s feet. Bajoran shrimp salad....well you don’t want to know, trust me.”

Lt Commander Ever Zeanar, CoP

“That’s strange,” Jules said, her mind trying to cycle through the possible causes of the malfunction. She wanted to ask for more information but decided not to overstep. She would, however, follow up on this later.

She seemed to snap back to the here and now and then thought for a moment, “I wasn’t expecting to report on board having one foot on the ship and one on a starbase. I met Lt. Mason…on the ship…in engineering and been to my quarters…on the starbase. I honestly don’t know what kind of a day I’m having yet.”

She was starting to get nervous and hoped it didn’t show.

Ens. Chen

“Well that is a good start. How did your meeting go with Lt. Mason?” Ever was curious what the ensign’s impressions were of her new boss. Also she was trying to gauge how well the young woman was settling into her new Starfleet career. Being on an Academy ship and being in the fleet were nothing alike. But a good trial run. Ever herself had not spent much time in space during her career. Well at least not on a ship. Remote desolate places in space, sure. Ships, not so much.

Lt Commander Zeanar, CoP

“There’s a lot going on in Engineering right now with the starbase crew and all. But when I checked in I felt like I had his undivided attention. That’s a good sign I guess,” she skirted around the obvious. She pause, “Truth is I really won’t know until we get underway, right?”
