Myqian gave him a nod. “I appreciate that. And, fair warning too. I never can filter thoughts and emotions from everyone one hundred percent. I will never invade someone’s privacy if I can help it and my professionalism demands I don’t act on things without reason, but… that being said, I prefer to be more open with those I work with closely. So for the senior staff expect me to… speak up if you I feel uncertain about something I’m getting from you.” It was the best she could do. She was in transition here as much as anyone else but she was changing her entire job description after twenty years in one field. It was bound to be bumpy at times.

“Full telepath, or empath with occasional telepathy?” Brad asked, presence almost immediately becoming guarded to Myqian as his eyes narrowed. His posture changed as well, sitting up slightly straighter, and cocking his head slightly to the right.

It wasn’t the first time, and it wouldn’t be the last. But what could she do? If she wasn’t up front and people found out later, they would say she had tricked them. And when she was open about her abilities, there were times when this was the reaction she got. If it made her sad or angry or anything at all, it was hard to say, because Myqian’s mask of impassivity was second to none. She hadn’t made it twenty years as a psychiatrist without one and so as she gazed back at Walker, she simply shrugged a little and said, “Full. My parents weren’t entirely sure how it would present itself given she’s Betazoid and he’s Haliian, but I rate moderately high. I can’t push them very far without serious strain, but rare is it ever needed.” Her abilities after all, while a natural part of her, were simply a tool that she could opt to use. Sometimes though, as she had warned, that tool had a mind of its own.

“My predecessor on the Owie was a Betazoid,” Brad said. “I only got to meet him briefly during the transition, and to be honest, it was less a professional hand-off than a loud argument - both psychic and verbal - between him and his sister, who was flirting with me from the doorway.”

Dira tilted her head slightly and her brows lifted. That certainly didn’t sound ideal.

He relaxed again. “I don’t want you to get the idea that I don’t like telepaths, because I recognize it’s something you were born with that’s part of you, and I admit it can be useful to have a conversation without actually ever saying a word, but it also can give me a headache.”

“Not disliking telepaths isn’t the same as being comfortable with them,” Myqian said flatly before exhaling. “Look, clearly there is a bit of uncertainty stemming from pervious interactions. All I can say is that with me, you get professionalism. I’ve been a therapist for twenty years, Commander. I know my stuff and I know people. I’m still navigating formal leadership but it’s something I feel good about. I can promise to never intentionally put you in an awkward position, but I can’t guarantee that there won’t be moments where I simply am not full aware of what was a reading of someone and what was done intentionally. I’m fallible, just like anyone.”
