Ralin Tell had whiled away more hours in the offices of counsellors and therapists than any other cadet in his academy class, at least it had felt that way to him. Rounding the starbase corridors as he made his way to yet another, however, he was anything but fed up. The guidance of these figures had been invaluable in the shaping not only of Ralin’s career but of his very being, a concept he was still far from fully coming to terms with.

The etchings marking out the room designations counted down until he reached his destination. After taking a few seconds to straighten up both himself and his uniform, he took a deep breath and sounded the door chime.

“Enter!” a female voice answered firmly.

Even before Tell had entered, he would have known the counsellor’s office was an old and unused guest quarters on the ageing space station. Piles of PaDDs stacked precariously on the edge of a desk on the far side of the room directly across from the entrance door. A  chair was pushed under the desk that didn’t look safe enough to support the weight of a small child.  Lights blinked randomly from the LCARS terminal suggested it might not have been functional. In the middle of the room was a brightly multicoloured couch and matching chair separated by a coffee table.  Two clear glasses and a blue beaker of water sat in the middle of the table, surrounded by more PaDDs.

Sitting on the couch with her legs folded underneath , Ever’s standard uniformed black shoes sat in front of her. Goddess how she hated those ugly things. Bright blue of her uniform top complimented her dark hair that hung straight down across both shoulders to the middle of her back. Looking up to see who was entering her ‘office’, dark unmistakably Betazoid eyes focused in on her guest. Smiling warmly she waited for the young man to introduce himself.

After pausing to inspect the environment he was entering, Ralin took a few steps into the room. The wornness around him left him unphased; it was the sharpness and comfort of most Starfleet facilities that continued to amaze the Trill. The gaze of the man’s jade eyes met Ever’s as he announced himself firmly, almost as though he hadn’t yet been noticed. “Ralin Tell, Ensign.” He nodded militarily before immediately raising his eyebrows and raising an arm in a questioning gesture at one of the chairs. The two uses of physical communication were striking in the contrasting attitudes they conveyed.

Ever watched the young man for a few seconds trying to get a read on his body language. Most humanoids preferred not to share what they considered their personal thoughts as though it were personal space. Which was the opposite for some telepathic races. Even slight physical contact to that group would be uncomfortable, but completely open with their thoughts and feelings. The counsellor preferred not to stereotype people by their race, but took each individuals preference’s as they came. Though some things held true universally. Ensign Tell held an air of confidence of someone older and more experienced than the average Ensign. Much older. Ever noticed the trail of spots marking the security officer as belonging to the Trill. Taking a longer look. Ever realised he was older biologically than her first thoughts.

“Please,” Ever said waving to the chair across from her. She pored two glasses of water, taking one and leaving the other for Tell. Was he a joined Trill, she pondered. Ever did love a good story. This man might have many. “As I am sure you know already, I am Dr. Ever Zeanar. But only doctor if there is surgery involved. So I prefer Commander. I will confess, I am still just returning from a bit of a leave and haven’t had a chance to read your file yet. Not having an actual office or a ship is a little bit....stressful, I suppose. How are you finding the transition from your last post?”

Lt. Commander Ever Zeanar, CoP

Tell lowered himself into the seat with measured precision as he heard the counsellor out. “Commander it is.” A nod accompanied his words, its elegant sedateness alone somehow conveying a grander perception of the passage of time yet contrasting with his gruff, barked words. The ensign inhaled deeply before continuing. A counsellor unfamiliar with his records was quite the novelty at this stage. “You not knowing my past… Ye’ll see me as I am now, here. Ye’ll no see what the others saw before you.” His voice levelled out into a well modulated ring. “Could be a promising opportunity fer you to help me see myself anew. Being here… is almost half a new life for me.”

The Trill’s voice again fell into its natural mess of rises and falls. “But yes, am happy to be here. Very happy. Shipyards… no for me. A year of watching ships not move wid be enough for anyone. Here I can help. All I want is to help.”

“A new life, another start. I do apologise for not having had the opportunity to read your file. But then again, it gives me the chance to see you fresh and not through someone else’s eyes,” Ever said taking a long sip of cold water. The vase was one that had belonged to her mother and was specially formed to keep liquid cold longer. The tall sleek blue vase had been purchased while her parents had been on their honeymoon on Alpha Centauri. One of only three items Ever had brought from Betazoid, it was the only thing of her mother’s she had kept.

“Happy is good. How do you see your role as a security officer in a way that helps? I mean beyond the normal and obvious of keeping the ship and crew safe,” Ever said titling her head sideways slightly, allowing her long black hair to fall forward over her shoulder. Not taking her dark eyes from him, he held her complete attention.

Lt Commander Ever Zeanar, CoP

The watchful eyes of the ensign inspected Ever closely as she drank. At her query, he somehow straightened up despite his already excellent posture. “Commander, I’ve put a lot of evil in the world in my past. That ended when I… When I…” The man’s thumb gently massaged the spots along his temple, threatening to rub the blots away, each barely visible against his already dark skin.

As he paused he pressed his eyes shut and moments later the hand bearing his stroking thumb fell into his lap. His serene gaze rose back to meet Zeanar’s. “That became my past when a was reborn.” His voice had risen in his throat, assuming a more feminine resonance. “Ralin wis replaced by Ralin Tell but Ralin is still in here.” A finger launched to meet his head in a point yet landed lightly, barely if at all making contact.

The sudden motion shook the man back to his previous manner. “A’ll never make right on that past. But standing for those who need it most… that I can. This is the place to find the needers. A lucky assignment, for me.”
