Oscar had definitely overdone the “yuck” factor at the awards ceremony dinner the previous evening. It wasn’t so much the taste in his mouth that was the problem; his mouth had felt far more rotten than this before. The truth was that he had developed a horrible case of gas, and his isolation suit air filters had overloaded from the intensity. As such, Oscar was yet again out if his isolation suit, albeit only for about an hour, while the equipment performed self diagnostics and repairs. He was getting some dirty looks from other personnel on board, seeing as his flatulence was alternating between loud and boisterous and quite but noxious, but Oscar got some small enjoyment out of others’ discomfort. Still, he knew that he couldn’t work like this, and decided to tone down his food choice for his morning meal. He walked up to the most substantial replicator he could find in the mess area and looked over his options.

“Okay, here we go,” Oscar said to himself, albeit out loud, and then ordered from the replicator. =/\= Three chicken sausage links, salt and pepper only; a three egg cheese omelette; mint tea, hot; and three flower tortillas with butter. =/\=

The replicator worked for about a minute before everything was ready, and the device was even programmed to put everything on a tray. Oscar was grateful for the convenience, but did not look forward to the bland breakfast that he was about to consume. It was sustenance, and it would definitely help with the gas, but it wouldn’t be something he enjoyed.

Cai appeared with a bowl of cornflakes. “I think I’m gunna die.” He said to the engineer. ”I didn’t know you could get hungover from eating dinner”

Cai

“I told you it had a kick,” Oscar said to the young man as the CPO’s abdomen rumbled in agreement. “Sickbay probably has a good remedy; I’ve built up a resistance to it over the years, but I have never figured out how to have that meal completely unscathed.”

“Oatmeal with berries, chilled. Black coffee.” A nearby replicator groaned the murmured request into existence. The man who slowly lifted synthesised meal was tall and dark of skin. Despite his shaved head and sculptural, clean shaven features, in the recollections of many he encountered he sported the rough stubble of a man twice his age.

The man surreptitiously eyed Oscar and Cai as he stepped away from the replicators, cautiously sipping his hot beverage, recognising Oscar as a member of the group of Ogawa officers he had existed on the peripheries of the day before, shortly after his arrival on the starbase. For the moment he stood back and kept to himself. If they were to settle at a table he would likely move to introduce himself, not keen to receive a second command from above to mesh better with his crewmates.

Ensign Ralin Tell - Security

Oscar scanned the room and motioned to an open table. “Come on, kid, let’s see if some blander stuff can help with the issue.”

Cai followed looking as green as the engineer.

Cascarrabias grabbed a chair and motioned for Cai to join him. He’d gotten the impression at dinner that his new CO didn’t much care for how her brother had taken to the green Spaniard. Since one of Oscar’s small pleasures was causing officers discomfort, his instinct for being an irritant overrode his instinct for isolation.

Once they had sat down Cai sipped his water and groaned at the plain toast. He pushed his plate away and let his forehead fall onto the table with a small thump.

An imposing figure in a gold uniform loomed over, casting a deep shadow across the table. “Is there a problem here?” Ralin asked, introducing himself dry wit first. The man raised a muscular arm as he sipped at his dark coffee, his jade green eyes all the while examining the two closely.

Bump :)

“That depends upon whether you consider severe reactions to indigestion to be a problem, Ensign Phaser Holster,” Oscar said, using his free arm to indicate Cai.

“A problem?” Ralin boomed. “A problem for sure. Just maybe not one solved with this.” He tapped on the phaser firmly holstered at his waist.

Oscar grabbed the omelette and started to break it up, looking for all the world like he’d ordered the omelette just to mess with the replicator when all he really wanted was scrambled eggs.

Cai lifted his head and looked at Ralin. Then put it back down. ”It was good at the time…if a bit…pungent.” he said in reference to his meal the night before.

“I did warn you that it had a kick, you know,” Oscar said just before a small burp escaped. He looked back at Tell. “So, are you going to stand there with your food, or are you going to decide where you’re going?”

“Well… may I?” asked the security officer. Before anyone could respond, and even before he had quite finished his question, Ralin was placing his meal down alongside Oscar.

Oscar took a swig of his tea. Tell’s choice to take Cascarrabias’ challenge as an invitation was something that the non-com actually liked about some officers. They tended to act like they were the proprietors of wherever they happened to be, provided that they were the highest ranking individuals present.

“So, what’s your billet?” Oscar said, trying to sound casual. “I got assigned to the Ogawa, but it turns out she’s being overhauled right now. Something about a holo-drama coming to life and hijacking the ship, as far as I recall. Or at least it’s I think what if.” Oscar had slipped from Federation Standard back into Spanish on that last sentence, and the universal translator hadn’t quite caught it correctly.
