Toveka moved up beside the woman and glanced at the pieces. “Ma’am… I know they can never be what they were. But we can scan the pieces and replicate them to the smallest detail. If you need to study them, for cataloging, that is.” She was not the kind to be able to offer comfort. But she stood at the woman’s side to see if she could be of any assistance, anyway.

Toveka took a moment to glance around and make sure everyone was all right. Glancing to the security and others from the ship in the room, she saw no one else taking the move, so she did. She raised her voice enough to be heard thru the room. “We need to see to the security of the containers. Restrain them to the wall or force shield them if need be. Be sure the shields will hold but not harm anything that tips towards them.” She glanced to the others of the guests. “Is everyone else all right?”

While the woman continued to sniffle by the crate, the man in charge of the unloading approached along with a very apprehensive looking male human, “My men are fine, and I have your culprit right here.”

At this statement, the woman turned her eyes on him, and her eyes hardened. She did not say anything as of yet, but her hands clenched, and her body started to shake.

Pushed forward, the man glanced up from the floor at the Star-fleet officers, “I was the one who placed that box on top of the stack, but gosh if I know how it got that unbalanced.” He lowered his head, “I know that I haven’t been doing as well lately, and I have been making small slip ups, but I made sure that it was properly set up, honest!”

Toveka frowned. She glanced from one to the other of the guests in charge. The man holding the culprit seemed ready to wring the man’s neck for his carelessness. The woman looked like she wanted him to die a slower, much more painful death. “I fear what you did is not in my power to judge. These cargo pieces belonged to your crew.” It was not that she was ignoring him, it was merely that it wasn’t her place to forgive him for another slip up, or punish him for his insolence.

“How badly was this damaged,” Jessica asked the woman who seemed in charge of the chaos around them. Clearly, it was broke with the large crack down it but whether or not it could be easily fixed was the question.

Lt. Commander Jessica Vaughn, XO

The woman replied, “I… I don’t know, it could be just superficial, but if there is structural damage within....” She started to tear up again.

“As Lieutenant Brine says, we can replicate the exact match for it for research.” Then Duncan looked at the woman directly while tilting his head slightly at Jessica, and flicking a glance to Brine. “That is of course unless research wasn’t the main consideration of this operation, because theft of relics from the area previously the domain of the Romulan Star Empire is illegal, all artifacts belong to the Romulan survivors. Placing a box insecurely is hardly a crime, and won’t affect research one bit. However, it will affect the profit from selling the item. Commander perhaps we should bring in Security and hold all these items for inspection. Lieutenant Brine here can lead the team examining the relics for Stolen property.”

Lt Rhodes, CSO

Toveka hadn’t even considered they were possibly being stolen. The fact that so many pieces had been recovered had given her pause to thank the Ones that listened that at least something of her culture would be preserved. But as Duncan sent for a security team and placed her in charge, a dark look filled her eyes. “Where did these come from and who authorized their removal?” She clenched her teeth as a myriad of other questions filled her mind. She didn’t want to appear confrontational, but suddenly the thought of the pillaging of the remains of hey people stuck in Toveka’s mind as a horror equal in horror to the loss the planet itself.

No one else was likely to see anything more than a slightly upset Romulan before them, mad because they may be thieves. But Duncan would know her well enough that if he looked, true rage was in her eyes and stiffness of her body. Probably more anger than he’d ever seen in the normally even tempered scientist.

The woman’s gaze turned to the officers, clearly not in the mood for this, “If you must know, this is an Emani Group expedition, and we made an agreement with the Romulans on the retrieval of said artifacts.” The Emani Group was a family in charge of a few colonies that had done rather well over the years. As such, they had become rather wealthy and often dedicated their time to the pursuit of the arts and other such luxuries. Them sponsoring an archaeology expedition would not be unheard of.

While Toveka’s face didn’t settle much, it did a little bit. “If what you say is true, then I’ll apologize. But you must understand. This is possibly the last collection of artifacts from an entirely decimated planet. Surely you understand the implications in that.”

She let the extra bodies that had started to mingle, begin cleaning up and carefully placing pieces in individual containers for possible reassembly later.

“If it is true, it means that they will have a writ of export from the legally recognized Romulan government, and not one of the fractured groups claiming such.” Duncan said not swayed by the obvious name drop the woman had used meant to impress and possibly intimidate. She had dropped the name without any effort to show proof, his own Family was rather more influential than the Emani’s, in fact they most likely purchased goods from the Rhodes Foundation, and anybody in barely legal occupations knew that a name dropped at the right time could work wonders. “It also means that Starfleet has provided a waver to the law about removing another species artifacts from an area still claimed by another sovereign culture, lest it be seen as breaking the Prime Directive. Both will need to be checked and validated before the goods are released.”

Lt Rhodes, CSO

The man in charge felt his pockets before pulling out a piece of paper smudged with coffee stains, causing the woman to gasp in annoyance. Handing it over, he rolled his eyes at her reaction, “Don’t worry your pretty little head my dear, this is just a copy, the actual form is on the ship.”

True to his word, what was between the coffee stains looked like an official document, but certain parts were difficult to read. The form clearly (as clearly as a stained paper could) stated that an archeological excavation was permitted, however, the bottom was too smudged to make out too much more of it, other than a few words such as ‘danger’ and ‘fully intact’.

Mr. Snuggles (GM)

The fact it appeared this was all legit made Toveka’s hackles raise. How could someone allow such ‘theft’ of a civilization. But then again, the other half of her brain realized that perhaps if it ‘hadn’t’ been allowed, she wouldn’t be looking at the pieces because they would be hovering out there in space on the rocks that were her planet. As much as she hated to admit it, and she never would out loud, it was a good thing that the Romulan civilization wasn’t completely lost. “Make sure the original is given to the Science and the Security chiefs along with the manifests.” It was all she could say and keep her anger in check.

She turned to those gathering the pieces. “Make sure they are secured and taken to science.” She nodded to those in charge. “We will see what can be done to repair and record them for your records.”
