Using the thrusters to come to a stop, Duncan looked along the length of the vessel and turned from side to side, using the suits scanner to look for irregularities. “These readings are coming from inside, but the ship itself has no power” he confirmed. “There’s some kind of damage further along, it might be a way in. Without power we’re not going to be able to open the hatches unless we cut into it, and we haven’t got the tools for that here. Lets check out the damage.”

Gently boosting along the side of the huge Romulan Warbird, they kept a look out for incoming rocks from the field around them. Caught in the gravity well, however, most of the area was held in place fairly stable. With plenty of oxygen left, time wasn’t an issue but Duncan was concerned about the anomalous readings he had picked up, it was like something was out there watching them, and the thought that on this system alone, among these very rocks, an entire planet with billions of people had died made Duncans mind flick to the old time ghost stories and shudder slightly.

Soon, a huge torn opening appeared in the side of the ship, the interior lit only by the light of the systems star and the lights coming from the two Scientists suits, otherwise, the interior was dark and dead. Perfect for ghosts. Raising his arm to stop himself at the edge of the opening, Duncan ran a scan. “This wasn’t energy weapons fire” he confirmed, “it is damage from an asteroid strike. I’m picking up similar strikes in other places, it looks like the damage caused the ship to lose power and life support, in the chaos of the evacuation and supernovae energy, nobody was coming back for them. Lets see what we have.” Pulling himself forward, Duncan floated in past the damage which was large enough to have ripped off the outer hull and expose a number of decks to space, just from this one strike alone. Rock could still be seen in the interior.

Hovering over the deck, he activated his magnetic boots and felt himself drop to the floor, where his feet stuck securely. Turning on all the lights on his suit, he took a brief look around from his position. The door that lead in from this room, obviously once a quarters, was open. Whatever had happened after the strike, had happened extremely fast as damage control appeared to have not worked. “If the computers aren’t too damaged” he said to Brine through the comm, “we can power up a console with our suits and download as much as we can. The Bridge is that way, but the power reading is that way, in the opposite direction.” Duncan adjusted the Phaser at his side, it would be no good against Ghosts, but the readings he had from the Shuttle made him think it wasn’t just ghosts haunting this boneyard.

Toveka followed behind him and locked herself to the deck plates a step behind him, closer to the opening. She glanced around and used her own tricorder to confirm the readings. “Well, if the power is coming from someplace other than the bridge, we should see what it is.” Her voice was steady, but Rhodes would recognize the hint of second guessing herself in the timber of her words.

“Easy Brine” Duncan said softly into the comm, “We got this. The ships deserted, no life sign readings and it’s been here long enough that I doubt it’s going to fall apart now. The Star Empire built their ships to last, and whatever that power reading is, this thing has contained it well enough for years. Now lets go.”

Unlike a moment ago, she took the lead and followed the power signature they were both getting. Rhodes was her Chief. There was no reason for him to be first thru the door if something were to go awry. “What do you think could give off this kind of power? If I know my schematics, we are above and passing the engineering bay. So it’s not the core of the ship we are reading. Is it?” She glanced over her shoulder at her boss then looked forward before seeing his reaction.

“It’s not the Core” Duncan explained, “These ships use an artificial micro singularity to power them, if that was what we were reading, we would be in all sorts of bother as we got pulled into a black hole” he grinned at her through his visor, wondering if she noted the tease.

“What we are reading, is something far more powerful. It’s unstable and I’ve never seen an energy signature like it, my tricorder cannot identify it either. It looks like we might have found something completely unknown to the Federation that the Romulans were carrying.” He reached out and put his hand on Brines shoulder to stop her a moment. “It might be what we are looking for, we will know soon.”

Presently, the two came to a large door that appeared to lead into one of the storage bays. Without power however, the doors were not about to open and after being exposed to the vacuum of space, appeared almost frozen shut. “What do you think?” he asked Toveka. “We could try cutting through, or see if we can wire our suits or Tricorders to the door to give it enough power to open. The energy signature is on the other side, I don’t appear to be getting any radiation readings from it.”

Lt Rhodes, CSO

Toveka caught the hint of jest and smiled. She wasn’t one for jokes, but his comment was enough to ease some of the tension between her shoulder blades. As they arrived at the door, his deductions and suggestions made sense. “We shouldn’t risk the suits’ powers. We aren’t sure what’s the power issue on the other side, or if it’s tied into the ship.” She pocketed her tricorder and rummaged around in her small pouch for a moment. Coming up with the tool needed for opening the power panel beside the door, she began removing the panel, the small attachment tips stayed in the panel holes because of self seating edges. She set the panel on the floor, removed her tricorder once more and pulled the jumper cord from the wall.

Glancing back at her companion, Toveka shrugged, a rare nervous gesture, and murmured, “Here goes…” She plugged the tricorder in and tried to get the power to sinc up enough to get the door to open.
