While Toveka’s face didn’t settle much, it did a little bit. “If what you say is true, then I’ll apologize. But you must understand. This is possibly the last collection of artifacts from an entirely decimated planet. Surely you understand the implications in that.”

She let the extra bodies that had started to mingle, begin cleaning up and carefully placing pieces in individual containers for possible reassembly later.

“If it is true, it means that they will have a writ of export from the legally recognized Romulan government, and not one of the fractured groups claiming such.” Duncan said not swayed by the obvious name drop the woman had used meant to impress and possibly intimidate. She had dropped the name without any effort to show proof, his own Family was rather more influential than the Emani’s, in fact they most likely purchased goods from the Rhodes Foundation, and anybody in barely legal occupations knew that a name dropped at the right time could work wonders. “It also means that Starfleet has provided a waver to the law about removing another species artifacts from an area still claimed by another sovereign culture, lest it be seen as breaking the Prime Directive. Both will need to be checked and validated before the goods are released.”

The man in charge felt his pockets before pulling out a piece of paper smudged with coffee stains, causing the woman to gasp in annoyance. Handing it over, he rolled his eyes at her reaction, “Don’t worry your pretty little head my dear, this is just a copy, the actual form is on the ship.”

True to his word, what was between the coffee stains looked like an official document, but certain parts were difficult to read. The form clearly (as clearly as a stained paper could) stated that an archeological excavation was permitted, however, the bottom was too smudged to make out too much more of it, other than a few words such as ‘danger’ and ‘fully intact’.

The fact it appeared this was all legit made Toveka’s hackles raise. How could someone allow such ‘theft’ of a civilization. But then again, the other half of her brain realized that perhaps if it ‘hadn’t’ been allowed, she wouldn’t be looking at the pieces because they would be hovering out there in space on the rocks that were her planet. As much as she hated to admit it, and she never would out loud, it was a good thing that the Romulan civilization wasn’t completely lost. “Make sure the original is given to the Science and the Security chiefs along with the manifests.” It was all she could say and keep her anger in check.

She turned to those gathering the pieces. “Make sure they are secured and taken to science.” She nodded to those in charge. “We will see what can be done to repair and record them for your records.”

The woman nodded, and the man just chortled, “Don’t worry my dear, I am sure that you Star Fleet officers will do a splendid job. You know, I used to be posted on a Federation ship.” He sighed, “Sadly, that life was not for me, but I always look back fondly at those days.”

“Hey,” Jessica sais to Toveka in a soft voice and pulled her slightly to the side. “You okay,” she asked the women genuinely concerned that something more than the obvious was bothering her. “Okay, stupid question. Maybe a better one would be do you want to be the one in charge of this shindig. I can’t promise what is going to happen to the stuff once it leaves but while it is here maybe you could take some time to do extra research on the artefacts if you wish. If by chance any of them had religious or significant cultural to the Romulan race we may find the need to remand them to the Federation Antiquities Division for further study. Having them in Federation museums is not perfect or ideal but better than in private dealers hands right?” Jessica wasn’t sure exactly why she was suggesting this or if it was any more legal than in the current owner’s hand but she could not imagine how Toveka felt. This was a small gesture but maybe it was something. “Besides if it doesn’t work I will just have Aedan buy them and donate them to the current Romulan government. The man has more credits than God. He can just put it to good use,” Jessica half teased. At this point she had come to learn Aedan had stupid money so why not make him spend it in charitable contributions that benefit those she knew and not mass corporations.”

Lt. Commander Jessica Vaughn.

“No one had that much credit.” The half Romulan smiled slightly thinking it was a gesture merely meant for such a reaction.

“Aedan’s trusts funds have trust funds. The man has stupid money. I mean he paid a king’s ransom for this Marvel Legends Spider-Man and Mary Jane Watson Two-Pack Exclusive. It would be better served buying this,” Jessica looked at one of the artefacts and cocked her head slightly as she described it. “This dog-like bear thing pulling a cart-train…wagon.” Jessica was not an art connoisseur. She knew what she liked but had no ability to understand what she liked. “So if you want it it is yours but,”

“But thank you, ma’am. But I ‘would’ like to see to it that all of the artifacts are at least cataloged and stipulations placed on them that ownership logs be constantly updated with the new government.” The idea of an important artifact of her culture being wontonly used as something as trivial as a dish for sweets, or as some child’s play thing, made Toveka’s skin shiver.

The concern from the XO surprised her, though. She didn’t realize she was staring, for a moment. When she did, she blinked and shook her head. “Sorry, ma’am. Yes… I’d like to at least be part of the cataloging process in Science.” She quickly regained her composure and nodded.

“Done,” Jessica said in a commanding tone. “Duncan if possible could you please put Toveka in charge of cataloguing these pieces. If you need more staff for other projects I can move people around for you.”

Lt. Commander Jessica Vaughn, XO

The woman slowly approached, “Excuse me, if it isn’t too much trouble, I would like to observe the cataloguing. I know that Star Fleet has quite the array of instruments they use in their process, and I have always wanted to see them in use.”

Mr Snuggles (GM)

Toveka glanced around and nodded. “I will be happy to accompany you science.” She glanced at the others and nodded as well. “I will see to it it is all taken care of, and seen to.” She glanced at the XO and gave a deeper nod of respect and appreciation. “Thank you, Ma’am…” She hoped the woman knew how much it meant to her to get to touch and see to the safety of the objects, even if she would never get to know their final destination.
