“I love to eat but prefer beer to liquor unless it comes with an umbrella but what person doesn’t like those little umbrellas in your drink. Since we are not going anywhere with a blender then you don’t need anything but a few beers. I can’t sing but I do own a harmonica. I am not really into hiking and stuff but I love to be at those great hiking spots. You know those spots where the sun sets between mountain peaks or when it dips into water and slowly looks like it is being extinguished,” Lily said with a far off look. These were her favorite spots. Not because they oozed the romance as most men thought but more because they were truly spectacular. “I can’t draw or paint but I am one hella good knot maker from my classes in macrame. I like all kinds of music but I tend to like anything with a strong bass the best.” Lily continued to rattle off the things that she liked while getting lost in Duncan’s eyes. They were an amazing blue: clear, bright, and mesmerizing. She wondered how many women had looked into them. She wondered how many women he looked at with those eyes not as a friend but as something more.

Duncan listened and watched her as she spoke, noting the little mannerisms and way she moved her eyes and hands as she chatted to him about herself. Lily was expressive and lively under an exterior that appeared to be vastly out of her depth as a waitress taking customers orders, as exhibited by the fact that Duncan was likely going to have to make himself a sandwich when he got home and a decent cup of coffee. Judging by the way she described her love of scenery and a couple of mentions of music, Duncan surmised there was a depth to her that maybe she herself didn’t even know she possessed, and that made him smile as she chatted away, drawing him into her world. “It sounds like you are a girl worth getting to know” he said to her, smiling slightly as he leaned forwards, relaxed. “With that many interesting things going on, it doesn’t sound like there’s ever going to be a dull moment with you around, especially when you like being all mysterious and make me work to find out what your name is.” His smile turned into a grin as he looked at her.

“Do you want to get out of here,” Lily asked Duncan standing up. “It looks like the wait staff can handle the rest of the party. I’ve been here three hours. I think I can take a break for a bit.”

Lily the waitress

Duncan looked up at her in surprise, then almost by instinct stood with her. “You want to leave now? Are you sure you can take a break now, they look quite busy.” He looked around at the people sitting at the tables. Evies coffee shop was having a rather good turnout, although Duncan had to wonder if her business partners rent-a-friend business had something to do with it. The coffee could certainly use some improvement, and Duncan had an idea for that although Evie was likely too busy to entertain such an idea at this point.

“Oh, I am not taking a break. I am calling out early for the rest of my shift. They got this party under control and it is only serving food to people. I mean how hard can that be,” Lily laughed. “We are not talking brain surgery.

“I wouldn’t want to steal you away if you are going to get in trouble” Duncan told her, “I’ve heard that the business can be rather cut throat, and i’d feel terrible to be the cause of that as much as I did promise you a trip to the holo-deck, if you are still interested of course.” Duncan came around the table and stood close to the woman, looking down and into her eyes as he placed a hand softly on her shoulder as much as to be able to steer her out of the way of the wait staff passing close behind her as to let her know he didn’t want her getting in trouble of him.

“Heck yes, I want to go holodecking with you. I would love to know what brings a smile to your face and what makes you go on an unintentional rant. Unintentional rants are a true mark of someone’s character and personality. You know what I am talking about right,” Lily looked at Duncan hoping he understood. “That moment when people stop being polite and go off about their neighbours cat problem or the state of the Federation’s educational system. When you find that one topic,” Lily gave him a small grin, you can find out far more about someone than the back and forth twenty questions most people dance around.”

“Let me tell you a secret” Duncan told her, leaning in closer to her and moving his lips by her ear as if it was a very important secret indeed. “I don’t go on unintentional rants” he told her, “intentional rants, yes, once I have something that has burnt my ember but unintentional, no. If I rant about something, it is for a reason.” Whether that was true or not, he wasn’t going to tell this nameless waitress who he, somehow, had found himself on a trip to the holodeck with. Let it be a challenge to her to find something for him to rant about, perhaps.

“Um you do realize that at this point you are being basically paid for your breaks because you have only worked for about 30 minutes all night,” one of the waiters said staring at her.

“I got enough for rent this week,” Lily said sliding on her shoes. “So ready,” she ased Duncan happily.

Lily the waitress

“Okey, so what about rent next week?” Duncan asked her, slightly alarmed at her carefree attitude to her living arrangements. His great somethingerather Grandmother would have been fuming at the nostrils and exceedingly disappointed for Duncan in even considering a date with this woman. Wait, was that what was happening? Duncan wasn’t sure exactly if they had found themselves on a date or not. In any case, Duncan was more certain that his great somethingerather Grandmother would have been more disappointed in him if she knew what he had gotten up to in his late teens with much of the hired help.

“You know, if you lose this job I don’t exactly have room on my couch, even if you are kind of, short” he said, and his grin was back again. “I’ll tell you what, instead of the holodeck tonight, I’ll take you somewhere I know on the station that’s a hidden jewel. I bet you have no idea that it exists, and my treat for dinner. If your going to be a Starhobo next week because of me I better feed you first, right?
