Epello wasn’t certain when her infatuation with the stars had begun, nor when it had ended. She had always been somewhat indifferent to the blazing balls of gas which lit up the night sky in an array of colours, leaving the worlds beneath in peace, knowing they were up there. Those worlds, sometimes seeing those stars as messangers from the gods, and others as gods themselves. Her people had never been too fond of the stars, and perhaps that was due to their inability to see them. They dwelled beneath the surface, the darkness of their caves stealing their eyesight, far back within their evolutionary track. When they had seperated themselves from the Andorian people, they lost their wonderlust, the need to explore. They remained isolated, put off from the remainder of civilization. So much so, the Andorians began to question whether they were fact or myth.

The evolutionary need to find solitude remained prevalent within the mind of every Aenar within their small, perhaps unnoticeable population. They thrived in solitude, living in small groups of individuals, and yet maintaining a level of secrecy, even to those they love. In this need, Epello found herself upon the observation deck, even if her eyes did not grant her the glory of seeing what lay beyond those thick slabs of glass. Yet, she did not need to see it, for she could feel it. She knew what lay beyond the confinement of the dininutive room, upon a small base, when compared to the grand scheme of the galaxy. And that, all in itself, was enough to satisfy her curosity.

It had been a long day, just as any other, her body wishing she had taken the time to rest. Standing, when she should have been sitting down, she braced a hand against the railing near one of the windows, her eyes closed, despite it making no difference whether or not they were open. For a second, her mind drifted back to the time when she was a child, before she was taken in by the Andorian family. She recalled her mother’s touch, the other often gone during the days. She could see hear as both of her fathers laughed or grumbled at whatever was happening. Their voices remained prevalent within her mind, yet ever an echo rather than a reality. Shaking her head, she opened her eye, making her way over to one of the chairs, where she lowered herself and crossed her legs. Maybe tonight, she would finally rest.

Exiting the turbolift Johnny found himself in one of the outposts many recreational areas but the specific area he was in now was the blue step lounge Johnny had been here when he first boarded 48 hours ago and due to having some free time felt it would be a good idea to go there again to mingle and meet some of the outpost’s crew. Walking over to the bar Holt approached a waiter and spoke to him in a clear concise manner “Scotch on the rocks please” he spoke stood at the corner of the bar peering around at the many occupants of the room. Moments later the waiter returned were he placed a small square piece of material onto the bar placing a small and square glass tumbler on top. The small tumbler housed several cubes of ice followed my several millilitres of lightly toned amber fluid this was scotch. “Thank you” responded Holt grasping the tumbler and walking away from the bar. Standing in the centre of the room Johnny peered around for a place to sit here he observed an Aenor female sat in the corner dressed in a yellow Starfleet uniform brandishing two bronze pips this alerted the Ensign that the female officer was a lieutenant. Walking over to the female he came to a Holt and politely spoke “Lieutenant” he said in a stern manner “do you mind if I joined you” he went on to say remaining silent allowing for the officer to respond.

Ensign Johnny Holt.
Security Officer.

Her eyesight be damned, but her hearing remained intact. At the sound of footsteps, she rose her head, turning her attention the approaching officer. While her gaze did seem to follow him, there was an unmistakable hollowness to its nature, an insinuation of her blindness. Able to understand basically who this man was, she gave a slight nod of her head, gesturing for him to take a seat, should he wish. “Of course, Ensign.” She returned, moving over, as if emphasizing her acknowledgment to his wish to join her. Judging by his tone, and what she could ‘see’ via telepathy, she assumed he was a security officer, especially since she’d never ‘seen’ him in Operations, unless there was a new officer she wasn’t aware of. “Security?” She inquired, gesturing to him.

“Thank you Lieutenant” came the kind words of the security Ensign who took a seat adjacent to were the Operations officer was sat. Now sat in the chair Johhny remained silent for several seconds until he heard his fellow officers query to which department Holt was a member of. “Correct Lieutenant I am a security officer new onboard” he spoke in a kind concise manner.

  • Ensign Johnny Holt
  • Security Officer

“Welcome to the ship, Ensign.” There was a gentle nature about her voice. Epello was not exactly the most excitable of women. She bore a calm demeanour dressed in the delicacy of an introverted soul. “I am Lieutenant Epello Aryris,” She leaned over with striking precision for a blind woman, offering a hand. “You are?”

Lt. Epello

“A pleasure I am Ensign Johnny Holt, Security” he began by saying in a polite welcoming manner before shaking the operation officers hand.

Epello nodded, curtly, returning the handshake. “Good to meet you, Mister Holt.”

“He’s lucky is what I’d say,” said a different male voice, interrupting. A short Andorian male approached them. “It’s not called the Amber Step Lounge. Were it me serving him I’d give him something blue whether he wanted it or not. More fun that way I think. But I suppose color doesn’t mean a whole heck of a lot to a cave-dwelling Aenar.”

Zolthan, Bartender

Epello turned towards the man, raising what could be seen of a pale eyebrow. “No, I suppose it doesn’t.” She returned, flatly. She could tell the man was Andorian, but that was about as much as she could, for the moment being. “You’re the bartender?” She assumed.

Remaining Silent having introduced himself to the Operations officer Holt listened intently waiting for Zolthans responce to the question of was he a bartender.

Johnny Holt, Sec

“Indeed I am. Zolthan’s the name. I tend to think of myself as more of a humanoid replicator. Or a counselor. But mostly the job is a pretty good excuse to tell jokes that aren’t exactly in line with Starfleet protocol. Like that classic one with the Aenar in the room full of blondes.”

Zolthan, Bartender

Epello was intrigued by this, wondering what the joke was. She had heard her fair share of Aenar jokes back when she was living with the family on Andoria, but not many of them had been good. “You’ll have to tell us a few, at some point, Zolthan.” She smirked, “Maybe yours can beat out the ones from back home.”

“Oh I’m sure they can,” confidently said Zolthan.

“The name’s Epello Aryris.” She cocked her head to Johnny, opening up the avenue for him to introduce himself.

Lt. Epello
COO

“Say, let me tell you at least that one joke and I’ll leave you to your getting to know each other or whatever they call what you’re doing,” interjected Zolthan, who didn’t seem to have any customers needing his attention.

Zolthan, Bartender

“Then please, join us.” Epello gestured towards an empty seat, so the man could sit with them, should he please. “Getting to know each other? Sure,” She shrugged, offering a smile to Holt.

COO

The Andorian bartender glanced around the lounge before deciding to sit with them. “Very well. It appears at the moment there’s as many staff as there are customers, so I’ve got the time. So the joke then.”

Zolthan launched into the joke with the confidence of an experienced joke-teller. “An Aenar walks into a bar on a Federation Outpost and has a seat at the counter. The Aenar then asks the person to the right if they want to hear a blonde joke. The person to the right then says, ‘I’ll give you fair warning since I know you can’t see. The bartender is an extremely cool white-haired Andorian, but aside from that this place is full of blondes. There’s a group of four women on the other side of me who are all blondes. There’s a couple more blondes at the table a couple meters away. And I’m a master level instructor in Anbo-jyutsu, I probably outweigh you by 25 kilograms, and tend to have a really short temper. And I’m blonde. So are you sure you still want to tell your joke?’ The Aenar then says, ‘No, I don’t. I don’t want to spend five minutes explaining it.’“

Zolthan, bartender
