“Okey, so what about rent next week?” Duncan asked her, slightly alarmed at her carefree attitude to her living arrangements. His great somethingerather Grandmother would have been fuming at the nostrils and exceedingly disappointed for Duncan in even considering a date with this woman. Wait, was that what was happening? Duncan wasn’t sure exactly if they had found themselves on a date or not. In any case, Duncan was more certain that his great something rather Grandmother would have been more disappointed in him if she knew what he had gotten up to in his late teens with much of the hired help.

“That is next week and not this week. This week I have a place to sleep and I am paid up on my rent. Why worry that far ahead? I mean anything could happen. I could play the lottery and win. Have enough to snap up Aedan Tellers residence or enough to pay my rent the next week. I could meet someone that is looking for a sidekick and have a grand adventure or come back here tomorrow and serve some coffee and danish if they have a spot on the roster. I won’t know that though until tomorrow not will I,” Lily said putting on her coat.

“You know, if you lose this job I don’t exactly have room on my couch, even if you are kind of, short” he said, and his grin was back again. “I’ll tell you what, instead of the holodeck tonight, I’ll take you somewhere I know on the station that’s a hidden jewel. I bet you have no idea that it exists, and my treat for dinner. If your going to be a Starhobo next week because of me I better feed you first, right?

Lt Rhodes, CSO

“Starhobo,” Lily laughed so hard she had to put a hand on her tummy as if trying to hold the laughter inside her body. “That’s a good one and one I haven’t heard before. I like your wit Mr. Rhodes,” she winked at him. “I am up for anything but can we swing by my apartment so I can change my clothes. It won’t take a second.” Lily had already started to head towards the door. A few minutes later they were at Lily’s apartment. Turning around she looked at Duncan. “I am fine with you coming in but just watch you don’t knock anything off the shelves. Maybe walk sideways” Lily suggested.

“Walk sideways?” Duncan asked, looking confusedly curious. “Why would I need to walk sideways? Are you a collector? A hoarder? An Artist?” The door slid open and the woman headed inside, Duncan watched her for a moment and looked inside the room, then took a step forwards. He was sure she was likely an Artist then, that must explain her slightly absentminded and care free attitude to things, she was a Space Hippy.

As Duncan walked into the room he would see the room was only four feet wide and about ten feet long. Lily might call this an apartment but Duncan had larger broom closets back home that this. The only furniture in the room was a bed and a single nightstand. Along one wall was the replicator and a sink. Farther down that wall was two doors. Lily opened one of the doors which proved to be a closet. The other door was a mystery because it was obvious her bedroom was at the end of the room. It was lucky that the doors were pneumatic because there was not enough room between the bed and the entrance to open the door if one actually swung out. The wall with her bed was lined with shelves. This was probably why Lily told Duncan to walk sideways. If he walked straight into the room and held out his hands to either side he would have no issue touching both walls.

“So do you want something to drink,” Lily asked as she rooted around the closet at the far end of the room.

Lily

“Um” Duncan answered, not really able to form a coherent word as he looked over the shelves and the tiny room. “This is your apartment?” he asked her.?

“Um hmmm,” Lily said moving into the room and picking up a pillow from the one chair in the room and setting it on the bed. “I moved in like 2…3 weeks ago,” she said before moving to the closet and hitting the panel to make the door slide back.

“I’ve had liaison’s with maids in bigger broom closets than this, I didn’t realize that OED had apartments like this.” He laughed as she rummaged for a change of clothes and he moved forwards carefully, the door sliding shut beside him and he had a distinct impression that this was what it must have been like for early mariners in submarines. He suddenly thought that even if she did lose her job, his pocket change could likely cover her rent for a month.

“Well it is supposed to be for one person but Billy and I do just fine. I was just so happy they needed a roomie. Once I met I knew it would work out perfectly,” Lily said leaning more into the closet.

Moving past the bed and glancing into the closet, he stopped in front of the other door and examined it. “This is the bathroom?” He asked her, then looked back at the shelves and bed. “I take it you have moved around a bit then.” He said by way of conversation, and looked at the replicator to see if it actually worked to get them both a drink. “I’ll get us something to drink if you like, what do you feel like?”

“Sure but don’t order soda, coffee, tea, juice, or milk. We haven’t gotten the upgrades for it yet this month. So anything else you want is fine. As for the bathroom…you didn’t go before you left Evie’s,” she asked pulling her head out and looking at him as if he was a small child that forgot to go the bathroom before he left home and now suddenly needed to go. “So what are we going to do? Should I dress warm,” she held up a tank top, “or cold,” she pulled out a hoodie.” Regardless what Duncan choose it was obvious Lily was going to go casual. “You know what I will wear both that way I don’t need a coat,” Lily said turning her back to him but pulling off the white dress shirt. He would clearly see the back of her bra but the rest was not left up to his imagination. From the curve of shoulder to the dimple of her spine that ran down the small of her back to the top of her pants, Duncan could see it all.

Glancing at the closet, he blinked, looked up and down then turned his back politely and bit his lip. The closet also obviously doubled as a, very shallow, changing room. Producing the drinks, Duncan stepped backwards once, twice and then slowly sat on the bed. There was no table or sofa to use, so he held the drinks and, after another glance at the closet and a grin, waited for her to complete getting changed. He kept looking over the room and thinking, he didn’t know her much at all, just met her, and still didn’t know her name. That seemed to be becoming a game with her. “So tell me, are you afraid of heights?”

Lt Duncan Rhodes, CSO

“No. Who is afraid of heights,” she said in a slightly muffled tone as she pulled the tank and then the hoodie over her head as she talked. “Heights don’t do anything to you. It’s the falling every time that can really mess up your day. “Eyes,” she said turning around holding a pair of worn jeans.

“It’s either close them or into the bathroom and if you want to go there I am going to have nowhere to put the laundry that is currently occupying it,” Lily said in a matter of fact tone.

Lily the waitress.
