“Um” Duncan answered, not really able to form a coherent word as he looked over the shelves and the tiny room. “This is your apartment?” he asked her.?

“Um hmmm,” Lily said moving into the room and picking up a pillow from the one chair in the room and setting it on the bed. “I moved in like 2…3 weeks ago,” she said before moving to the closet and hitting the panel to make the door slide back.

“I’ve had liaison’s with maids in bigger broom closets than this, I didn’t realize that OED had apartments like this.” He laughed as she rummaged for a change of clothes and he moved forwards carefully, the door sliding shut beside him and he had a distinct impression that this was what it must have been like for early mariners in submarines. He suddenly thought that even if she did lose her job, his pocket change could likely cover her rent for a month.

“Well it is supposed to be for one person but Billy and I do just fine. I was just so happy they needed a roomie. Once I met Billy I knew it would work out perfectly,” Lily said leaning more into the closet.

Moving past the bed and glancing into the closet, he stopped in front of the other door and examined it. “This is the bathroom?” He asked her, then looked back at the shelves and bed. “I take it you have moved around a bit then.” He said by way of conversation, and looked at the replicator to see if it actually worked to get them both a drink. “I’ll get us something to drink if you like, what do you feel like?”

“Sure but don’t order soda, coffee, tea, juice, or milk. We haven’t gotten the upgrades for it yet this month. So anything else you want is fine. As for the bathroom…you didn’t go before you left Evie’s,” she asked pulling her head out and looking at him as if he was a small child that forgot to go the bathroom before he left home and now suddenly needed to go. “So what are we going to do? Should I dress warm,” she held up a tank top, “or cold,” she pulled out a hoodie.” Regardless what Duncan chose it was obvious Lily was going to go casual.

Duncan opened his mouth to reply, but she appeared to already be away with her choice of clothing. His suggestion would have been something maybe a little more, semi- formal perhaps, but really it didn’t matter. It was only going to be the two of them.

“You know what I will wear both that way I don’t need a coat,” Lily said turning her back to him but pulling off the white dress shirt. He would clearly see the back of her bra but the rest was not left up to his imagination. From the curve of shoulder to the dimple of her spine that ran down the small of her back to the top of her pants, Duncan could see it all.

Glancing at the closet, he blinked, looked up and down then turned his back politely and bit his lip. The closet also obviously doubled as a, very shallow, changing room. Producing the drinks, Duncan stepped backwards once, twice and then slowly sat on the bed. There was no table or sofa to use, so he held the drinks and, after another glance at the closet and a grin, waited for her to complete getting changed. He kept looking over the room and thinking, he didn’t know her much at all, just met her, and still didn’t know her name. That seemed to be becoming a game with her. “So tell me, are you afraid of heights?”

“No. Who is afraid of heights,” she said in a slightly muffled tone as she pulled the tank and then the hoodie over her head as she talked. “Heights don’t do anything to you. It’s the falling every time that can really mess up your day. “Eyes,” she said turning around holding a pair of worn jeans.

“What about my eyes?” Duncan asked

“It’s either close them or into the bathroom and if you want to go there I am going to have nowhere to put the laundry that is currently occupying it,” Lily said in a matter of fact tone.

Lily the waitress.

“Oh, right” Duncan said, and closed his eyes as he spoke to her. So you room here with, Billy is it?” He asked her. “I have to ask, this is the only bed I can see. How exactly do you room with a guy here and only one bed? Are the two of you an item?” Duncan asked, and felt an odd sense of disappointment at the thought. Lily wasn’t his normal ‘type’ really, although that was entirely unfair to her as he didn’t know her well enough to know what ‘type’ she was, and these last couple of hours were entirely a first impression. He couldn’t help himself though, he opened an eye to peek, just slightly.

He closed his eye again and grinned, just slightly. The girl was fun, and intoxicatingly interesting to talk to, even if half the time he had to think and catch up to where her mind was at. He leaned back on the bed, resting his back against the wall as he changed so he was half lying down. She was gorgeous, and he wondered why she was waitressing way out here on the Outpost, what could possibly have brought her out here if she wasn’t with Starfleet. “Well, your not going to be in any danger of falling tonight, unless it’s in love,” he teased her, “I promise you if we do fall, I’ll catch you. We need to stop by my quarters first, I have to check on Trico before we go.”
